Habs Off-season
To me, Nemeth is a 6th or 7th d-man on a contending team in NYR. They were more desperate to get rid of him than MTL is to move their guys. I would also say that Dadonov and Hoffman are both still top 9 fwds and would return anywhere from a 2nd to a 3rd rd pick if teams retained half their salary to move them. I'm not sure a team would pay even a 6th or 7th rd'er with salary retained for Nemeth.
I get what you're saying that some teams have paid a lot in draft picks to move out salary. I just feel Dadonov and Hoffman still have value especially if you cut their salaries in half to move them.

How does Tampa keep it together
You're right. They are in trouble to keep those 3 RFA's. I think they're going to have to move at least one for picks. Or maybe even two of them for picks and younger prospects.
Even if they can get their guys to waive their NTC's, teams know they have them "over a barrel" so to speak. These guys are all on 4/5 years remaining at 5mil and about to hit their 30's. This means Tampa is going to have to pay picks or prospects to move these NTC guys.
Tampa isn't my team, but I think they will be the most interesting team in the off-season to watch because of this problem. Cirelli and Sergachev could be huge impacts for other teams that could land them.

Habs rebuild
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ledge_And_Dairy</b></div><div>Why the hell would Philly trade a young top 4D and a 2nd for a goalie that's never played in the NHL and some mid and late round picks?
Also in what world are they tight on cap space?
They have roughly 11 mil for next year to re-sign a second goalie, N. Patrick, Linblom, Aube-Kubel, three depth fwds (Thompson, Pitlick and Grant), Hagg and Myers. Myers, Hagg and Patrick are going to take up a large chunk of that 11 million. Plus the following year they have to re-sign Hart, Sanheim, Morin and Laughton, so they aren't going to want to tie up all of that 11 million they have to spare beyond next year.</div></div>

Ottawa contenders because they are rebuilding on already having their 1 D
Tampa is going to have to pay something to move guys to free up space for Cirelli and Sergachev (or else let the two go for picks). So any deal involving guys like Johnson or Killorn aren't going to include a great return.
It wouldn't make sense for Ottawa to take on two guys who are 30 who have already peaked and arguably on the decline at 4.5/5 mil contracts, in exchange for two 25 year olds who are starting to blossom, plus young good prospects in Brown and Wolanin plus an early 2nd n 3rd in a quality draft. I'm not a Sens fan but would hope for their sake they don't make this move... It wouldn't be franchise altering, but it would set them back on their re-build path.

Getting more 1sts
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DiehardRedWingsFan58</b></div><div>St Louis isn't giving up their 2020 1st round pick to move Steen and Bozak, And what makes you think they'd waive for Ottawa anyways? And fat chance of Edmonton trading their 2020 1st for that offer either.</div></div>
I think STL does this in a heartbeat. They would only be moving down from like pick 27/31 (late 1st) to pick 65ish, to free up 10mil so they can re-sign Pietrangelo, Dunn and cover the many raises they have signed (Schenn, Scandella, Blais and Faulk). It's much more important that they keep Pietrangelo and Dunn, their #1 and 4 d-men than lose Steen and Bozak, 3rd and 4th line players. I'd argue, Ott could get more.
Also, a side note as someone else had mentioned all the 1st rounders, Kings had 4 in the Sedin draft (in 99 or 00 or 01) can't remember which year...

Covid-19 salary cap impact players signatures
Well said HFX_10<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Habs_Hfx10</b></div><div>Don’t know what you have against Domi but since joining the habs he’s had a career year and although his play was inconsistent still put up decent numbers this season. That’s not a bad contract at all. Although Tatar has been great since joining us it’s possible his play will be declining when the habs are contenders. I’m both for trading him and signing him, if we get an overpay offer we move him, if he asks too long of term we should move him . Adding youth which will be ready when we’re contenders is a good move as well</div></div>
Agreed, great points! We have to be realistic and accept we are not on Bos, TB & Tor levels right now. Yes we have depth but until we can improve our top 4 D and produce a true #1 centre, the best thing to do is the rebuild through the draft and/or using the surplus of solid picks and prospects to acquire young higher end prospects. This also gives time for our current solid to higher prospects Suzuki, Poehling, KK, Mete, Juulsen, Fleury, Brook time to develop. Any team over the past decade that has sustained being a contender for long periods of time have done so through draft (Pit, Chi, TB, Bos, Tor, LA, STL, Was? with some home grown elite/higher end picks and prospects and building around that. I get it, most of those teams also won Draft lotteries and landed several top 5 picks but that still doesn't make it foolproof, there has to be depth and a good mix (sorry Edm, Buf & Flo, you haven't been able to make this work). We cannot afford to get caught up in high paid, long term deals with guys over 30. We already have Weber and Price, who i love but won't be worth their cap hit in 2/3 more years. If we can re-sign Petry and Tatar at 2/3 year deals at current salary or less, i'm all for keeping them. But I don't see that happening (and in their defense, if winning a cup now and/or getting paid as much as possible is what they want, than re-signing as a Hab, is NOT in their best interest).

Habs rebuild
I'm all for upgrading/higher end players. In particular I would love to see Sergachev in a Habs uni. But to spend 3 or 4 1st rounders is too much. We need to either get Petry and Tatar re-signed at manageable contracts as i mentioned above or we trade them off. There's no doubt the GM is going to use the extra 2/3/4/5th rd picks to move up into the 1st or 2nd rd again which will be good. Another option with the extra picks is to use them in combination with one of our younger D-men for an upgrade of say Sergachev, Dunn, Bear, Myers or Fabbro. We're missing top 4 d-men and a #1 Centre. I get it the depth/surplus of picks isn't going to get us that, but re-signing Tatar and Petry to big $ long term hurts those chances even more, especially without the return we would get for them. I like these two guys, don't take me wrong. But with the way the cap works now, you can't have guys on the wrongside of 30 signed for big money long term. As it is we still need to get Gallagher and Danault significant pay increases and probably 5 or more year terms (and Domi).

It's not that he is negative value, it's that the others are less expendable... To keep him knowing you'll lose Dunn or Pietrangelo, it's not worth it. Binnington is playing 2/3's the games anyways. To pay a guy 4.3 mil to back up, just isn't feasible. Buying out will still count some towards the cap. Schwartz is too valuable to move. Steen and Bozak , i agree, their contracts are hurting more than helping.

My worry about re-signing Petry is that it will be at 6.5 or 7 for 4/5 years and that won't be worth it... If they can re-sign him at 5.5/6 at 2 or 3 I'm all for keeping him around. Not sure we get a whole lot more for Tatar. Maybe an additional 3rd if we flipped back a later pick. My thoughts were that the additional 1sts were higher end then all the picks we had and this put us in better shape long term. Flipping out some picks for Sergachev could be a good option as well. Not convinced we can get a #1 center at a reasonable rate. I think we're better off grooming our current young guys and bringing in more higher end picks.
