NHL 2020 Playoffs Projections
I think the most likely case is shortened rounds lengths like best-of-3s and best-of-5s. Would certain teams have an advantage in shorter playoff series?

How to actually give Toronto some cap relief
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MitchMarnerElite </b></div><div>Marino is much more important no doubt because he’s going to play more minutes as Letang gets older & is the team’s future #1 RHD. Hall is an elite offensive talent but he’s very poor defensively (at least according to his stats). Just a better version of Phil Kessel. I think hypothetically Marner would make a pretty good winger for Sid cuz he’s good in possession, above average defensively & can cycle the puck in the offensive zone. We won’t get him, obviously.</div></div>
right on everything. I compared Hall to Kessel a bit ago. totally agree.

They haven't won the Cup since there were 6 teams in the league, and coincidentally, that fall, the Penguins entered the league. It's been a long time.
Nice work.

Roy's metrics look surprisingly good for playing on LA.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Missouri</b></div><div>I love the bringing back of Kapanen... but would be disappointed to see Simon leave. Again with a guy like Matt Roy thats just to much to pay. You had Joakim Ryan before in a thread (if that was you, don't really remember) and he wasn't a good fit either.
I recommend the Penguins adding a guy like Nathan Beaulieu - Fast on his feet and more of a depth guy. OR even a Chris Tanev if they can afford him on a short term contract.
Check out this thread I made a few weeks ago now!

No not me on Ryan, I'll check out Beaulieu. Wasn't sure what the price for Roy would be...I'm not a Simon hater at all, I recognize his value but I do see him as expendable if we can get an upgrade at least in putting the puck in the net that would be nice. For me Simon can play on the 3rd line and help that out for sure, but I don't really like giving him top-6 ice time.

I live in Toronto so I hear a TON of leafs stuff. the media and fans were going ballistic about Babcock usage of barrie. I would if I were in the pens front office, Dermott has a lot to offer. He is a LHD(behind Reilly/Muzzin) but Pit has Dumoulin/Petterson so I don't see Dermott's theoretical role increasing in PIT. with GMJR though nothing is impossible. He said Petterson/Marino would potentially be a pair for 10 years, but he's said good things about Jack Johnson(failure)and Derick Brassard(traded) as well so....there are very few untouchables.

Holl was the probably the steadiest RHD Leaf last year. Even Ceci was much more dependable defensively that Barrie. Now Ceci was a CapFriendly whipping boy for some reason by all fan bases, mostly because of his contract but I'll maintain that Barrie was the worse Leaf Dman last year.</div></div>
Barrie had a down year for sure...last offseason he was the one of the most popular trade chips for many fans ACGMs, mine included...his next contract will take a hit for sure, but I don't think Toronto was a good fit. Ceci has all the tools, he just doesn't put it together.

finally, someone doesn't kill me or burn down a city. thanks, BTW. yeah I know, marino would be perfect for the leafs. if Pittsburgh traded him though, our defence would be really weakened as well. Dermott's nice but still...Pit/ tor isn't the best trade fit all around but nothing's impossible.

Sorry to inform hockey fans, the Leafs are not "desperate need" of a # RHD. The fact that the the two worse Dmen the Leafs had last year will be no longer LeafsBarrie and Ceci,..... improves the Leafs considerably.</div></div>
The Leafs may or may not be desperate to get a #1RHD. Most think they should be. Taking away two NHLers(even if bad) and replacing them with AHLers won't necessarily solve the problems. Maybe I'm wrong, but IMHO, Toronto won't be a contender until their team defence majorly improves. I think they'll have to sacrifice some depth offense for some D help. Just my opinion.

Cap space to fit the #1RHD which they desperately need.
The way their team is designed it will be top heavy. the big-4 forwards, the top 2-3 D, and the #1 goalie take up most of the salary cap. They can trade an big-4 forward, or a chunk of offensive depth. Or go with a substandard D core, keep their exorbitant offensive depth, and have no "Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup"--which I am totally fine with.

tell the Toronto fans; they're going ballistic.
I thought of Riikola/Simon because they're inexpensive depth pieces and good corsi players.
Roy/Soucy's puck possession/offence for stats look surprisingly good. I think you had Roy a while back (stick tap). Just trying to think of other 3rd pairing options.

They need to allocate it elsewhere. By trading some of their most viable trade pieces with the sole purpose of creating cap space, you're taking away from their ability to address their needs.</div></div>
I don't think a Tor/Pit trade is the best option for both sides, just trying to work out a viable option. I get it, it's way easier to trade some of the pieces mentioned directly for the RHD. But I took a circuitous route because Pit really can't spare Letang/Marino to help Toronto's RHD prob. You're very right.

Dubas would disagree with "destroying the bottom-6", they still have quite a few pieces. The point of this proposed trade is giving Toronto some inexpensive assets(Simon/Riikola) while giving them the cap space to acquire a RHD they desperately need. Unless they move Nylander instead, 2 of Kapanen/Johnsson/Kerfoot will probably have to go.

I think the best situation is to keep both for next year, because both have had their hiccups. They and DeSmith make a pretty deep 1/2/3. If Murray or Jarry for that Matter get a big head and want way too much, that’s really the only possible reason I could see one being traded. If so the pens could look at Khudobin or pens killer Halak.
