Carolina trade
The Canes already have pretty good RW depth with Lindholm, TT, and Stempniak. Besides, a 20 y/o Top-4 defenseman is worth his weight in gold. Hanifin would probably be worth more than Sergachev at this juncture. The Value coming from MTL would need to be much higher.

The Devils have no real defensive depth after Greene and Severson, I don't think they would want to trade away what little they have for top-six winger depth (one of the only areas besides goaltending where they are set).

Presidents Trophy three-peat
1. That deal with Winnipeg would be terrible for the Jets, they lose major offensive and defensive assets and in the process hardly equalise the loss with more consistent goaltending.
2. Protecting a backup goalie who played 23 games this past season is not worth losing a top-four defenseman.
3. Arizona takes on Orpik's terrible contract and still gives up a pick? If Washington wants to get rid of that, it's going to cost them a first round pick and/or a very good prospect.
4. Brendan Smith is making at least $1 million more AAV in the free market.

No doubt, Nashville fans wouldn't like the return needed for receiving a proven second-line center, even if it's just for one year.

Vegas move, and Hammer
You've improved the offense, no doubt, but that is one sorry looking defense, and this is coming from a Rangers fan. Half of the top six have one full season between them, and the other half have seen their best days. Pokke hasn't even played an NHL game and you have him on the top pairing...

1. AAV is too low on Zibanejad, look more to 5 mil per for six years, or 5.5x5 based on his production over the past three years as a center with good faceoff percentages.
2. Where is Lindberg? Assuming Vegas doesn't take him he's the team's best candidate for 4c if Hayes is not moved.
3. A third rounder is not enough of a sweetener for Vegas to take Klein over Raanta/Fast/Lindberg. If anything, you would need to package one if those three in the deal just for the cap dump of Klein.
4. Shattenkirk would take more on the open market, if he even accepted being placed on the second pairing. There is no such thing as a hometown discount (Stat Shot).

Pretty good overall, but I don't see Bonino signing for market value on a bubble team when he could most likely just stay in Pittsburgh for around the same amount.

Raanta, Lehtonen, Hayes and Shattenkirk
That Rangers deal does nothing on their end. The team's goalie pipeline is oversaturated and Lazar provides a fraction of the offense that Hayes does. The only upside is getting that first rounder but that is not worth a middle six center and 1b goaltender.
I'm sure Dallas would much rather keep Lehtonen than Niemi.

All of these trade are totally ridiculous, but I can say in redagrds to the Rangers trade: Kreider is head-and-shoulders above Smith in terms of value, adding a marginal prospect playing in the ECHL does not even out a trade involving those two.

Pesce is Carolina's current/future #1 D-man, I would imagine he's pretty much untouchable, and Pittsburgh would most likely match that amount for Sheary. Vegas also wouldn't take the 21st oa with Girardi without also taking another Asset like Raanta, if they took G at all.

Eh, I felt like he didn't really get a fair shake in Toronto, and while he's definitely not an ideal replacement for Raanta there aren't many other attractive options available at a low cost. Besides, Benoit Allaire is pretty well known for bringing out the best in goalies.

Kings
1. Mantha is twelve years younger than Gaborik and has plenty of upside, there is no way the latter is worth more.
2. Ovechkin for a second/third line winger and mid-round picks? come on son...
3. Pittsburgh matches that amount for Rust no problem, the only way anyone would make that trade was if they were a Kings fan looking to fleece another team (oh wait)...
4. Why does Vegas take on Brown for nothing when he has one of the worst contracts in the league?
5. The only trade that isn't ridiculously lopsided in favor of the Kings is the Carter trade. Why would the LA give up a first line Center for an older 2nd liner in Nielsen with a very similar AAV?
None of these trades make sense, try again.

The Kings are working at the cap ceiling, so I don't see why they would take on a terrible contract in Staal at the benefit of gaining a B prospect in Tambellini while still having to give up a second rounder.

So how do the Rangers use that last 5 mil to acquire a top-four RH D-man and a consistent top-six center? What if the salary cap stays at 73 mil and there's only three million to work with there? Also, Why would Lindberg sign for less than his last contract when he had two fairly productive seasons in the NHL, including a stellar postseason this year?

17-18 Isles
3.5 mil a year for five years of a fourth liner is still probably not worth taking for Vegas if all Clutterbuck would really provide is veteran presence. CC may not be all that bad, but the Isles will be up against the cap next year and Vegas understands that the desire to shed bad contracts places the ball in their court, and they would expect more on their end for taking them on. If there was an option to take on that contract vs not taking it at all I think Vegas' FO would go for the latter. Besides, I don't think that those five years will be outweighed by the fact they received a third and fourth rounder, considering they're more than likely to amount to nothing at all. That is a trade which exclusively benefits the Isles, when in reality the cost would have to equal or outweigh the opportunity cost of Clutterbuck's extended cap hit.

Fixing the rangers without sacrificing the future
Staal may be servicable as a sheltered third pairing guy, but there are plenty of those available in the draft. On top of that, Tambellini is hardly a prospect at this point and a second rounder at most is hardly incentive to take on an albatross contract for four more years, which would effectively push any attempt to field a curated team at the cap four years down the road because of one guy. Vegas really doesn't have to take on bad contracts to reach the cap floor so there's no reason they would unless they got a great deal out of it. In order to get rid of Staal, the Rangers would have to give up much more.

I agree with your sentiment. But Eakin is a 2nd liner, trapped in a team with 5 centers.
He will be a great 2C somewhere else.

But he wouldn't be in any better of a position with the Oilers is what I'm saying. Eakin would slot in after McDavid, maybe Draisaitl depending on whether he plays wing or center, RNH, and Letesu.

I'm sure Vegas' front office is salivating at the notion of taking on two years of an anchor in Jonathan Ericsson for two mid-round picks... 17-18 Isles
The Avalanche and Sabres trades are fair enough (not that the Islanders really need more offense) but any deal sending Clutterbuck to Vegas would require quite a bit more. Four more years at 3.5 mil aav qualifies as a bad contract for a fourth-liner, and the Isles would need to throw in something worthwhile to VGK to take it on, moreso than a couple of mid-round picks. Probably something like a later first or a solid prospect.
