Latest Rumor - Saad for Faulk
No chance at all that Saad will net a top-four RHD with a lower AAV on their contract. If Saad is traded this offseason, the return will most likely be <em>very</em> disappointing for Hawks fans after the year that he had. Bowman might as well have Saad stick around for the time being in the hopes that he'll bounce back next season.

How Tampa wins a McDonagh trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ColbyStamkosfan</b></div><div>I've made some revisions... how'd I do?</div></div>
Adding Sustr is addition by subtraction for the Bolts and provides no value to the Rangers since he's a UFA and will definitely not be re-signed. If he's added it provides extra cap space for Tampa, so you'd really have to count him leaving as value on their end, on top of McDonagh. I imagine the Rangers also only pull the trigger on a deal involving a high-end defensive prospect.

Massive ranger trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ColbyStamkosfan</b></div><div>As a Bolts fan I would drop Sergachev and find another way to try. Also not too hot on giving up Raddysh. Is it really worth it to sacrifice our future? Convince me.</div></div>
McDonagh's contract runs out at the same time Kucherov, Stralman, Point, and Gourde will need extensions, and Namestnikov will need a contract extending into UFA years this summer. Whether or not they acquire McDonagh, Tampa will need to make sacrifices of core players in order to stay under the cap, especially with Sergachev and Vasilevskiy needing extensions in 2020. This year and next will be Tampa's best opportunities to win the cup with their current roster, and McDonagh on his sweetheart deal could very well be the piece to push them over the top, allowing them to run two elite defensemen on the left side for almost the entirety of each game. There's no guarantee that any prospect, highly regarded or not, will become impact players in the NHL, and with somewhere around $15 million (generous on my part) available without somehow shipping off Callahan to fill at least nine roster spots in 2019, Tampa needs to take advantage of their golden opportunity to shoot for the cup.
It's not a matter of "sacrificing the future", Tampa will have cap trouble no matter what. It's a matter of taking advantage of a prime two-year window.

How Tampa wins a McDonagh trade
I don't think Sergachev is a necessary piece to make a deal for McDonagh, but Tampa fans need to accept that they're probably not going to be especially happy with what they give up for a player of McD's caliber. Acquiring a bonafide #1 D-man will require at least a 1st and a bluechip prospect, if not Serg than Foote++. A fringe #6 D-man, a 25-year-old in his breakout season playing on the wing with two stars, and two late seconds is far still from a far reach for one of the best two-way defensemen in the league.

Rangers
Hard no on the Rangers trade. Flipping McDonagh would be with the future in mind after resigning themselves to a retooling/rebuild, and getting back rentals in Bozak and Gardiner doesn't really make sense in that light, especially since only Gardiner would likely be re-signed, and at that point why not just keep McDonagh? Neither one of Bracco and Soshnikov is especially alluring, and moving up one round in the draft also doesn't offset the value of giving up a bona-fide #1 defenseman. This trade doesn't really seem to fit any particular goal, it's just patchwork.

Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters (2018 Trade Deadline)
Thanks for the reply. I was considering the most value I could conceive of without making any trade seem too biased, but I imagine the Nash/Grabner deals could theoretically be done without packaging later picks. Getting back Åberg, a young, high-energy bottom-six option would be a nice addition, since he's basically making league minimum and will be an RFA after next season. Having him andNashville's first-rounder would be very good value, but not egregiously one-sided. Austin Wagner is a winger in the mold of Grabner, but obviously is still very young and undeveloped, though he could help replenish Hartford's depth when players on the brink inevitably get called-up.

That Athanasiou deal is an insult to him. Why would he sign long-term for so low when he could get almost that much over two or three years as an RFA and then just get paid as a UFA?

I agree that OP's suggestion was terrible but yours' is equally bad for the Rangers. Buchnevich and DeAngelo are both high-level prospects and Granlund isn't worth all that much more than Zibanejad.</div></div>
Iranian Mika is a 50-point forward, and Granlund will score 70-80 points. The difference of 20-30 points is very huge. Hence the addition of two prospectuses.</div></div>
Zibanejad is a year younger than Granlund and has been more productive at center for years. Granlund has had one great season on the wing, but that does not in any way mean he's a 70-80 point player. Also, what difference does it make that Mika is Iranian?

Well, he's two years younger...
And last year he scored fewer goals, although he's broken 20 twice as many times in the NHL (so, twice...).
Kuznetsov is a brilliant stickhandler, and a sneaky passer with an incredible level of creativity. But Johansson has scored thirty goals in a season. That's got to be worth something.</div></div>

Expanding on BigBootyBitch's trade idea
You cannot trade players back to the team they were traded from in the same season. If this happened, Vegas would need to keep Toews and Kane for a year of their prime, which is totally improbable. Besides, $10 million in dead cap space for six years and the loss of two quality players is not worth some middling first rounders and change.

Pens Go #3
1. Sheary is not enough to net Brodin, top-4 defensemen are too valuable in this league to give one up for a middle-six winger (who will definitely be paid more).
2. Thornton is going to get $4-5 million + from whichever team he signs with. Iginla got $5.3 mil AAV for three years when he was a year younger as a winger.
3. I guarantee more teams will be offering Mason a lot more for longer. Younger players will take job security over a one-time chance at the cup 9 times out of 10.

I don't understand the logic of this... Assuming the Arizona trade went through (which is unlikely) why would the Rangers get rid of Nash for a mid-round pick? He still provides offense and valuable defensive play, and there would be plenty of room within the cap to keep him. It seems like throwing him away needlessly.

Except that Seabrook can still play. I love how people over value prospects and devalue players based on contracts. Does Nash suck because his isn't worth 7.8? Exactly.
No arguement that in 5 years Seabrook's contract is a scary prospect. He is currently a top pairing RHD however.</div></div>
Except there is no indication that Stepan will drop off at any point in the next four years, and is currently one of the best defensive centers in the league. That trade is horribly tilted in Chicago's favour, especially since it is obvious that Seabrook is more expensive and on the decline. Besides, Nash has one year left on his contract and Seabrook has seven.

Are draft picks enough for Stepan?
Rangers do not need to unload Stepan, and if they do it will not be for picks. They're still a competitive team and will try to be as long as Lundqvist is playing. Besides, if Klein retires and the cap goes up to $75 million, they'll have ~15 million to re-sign Zibanejad and two of Fast/Lindberg/Back-up replacement, as well as whoever gets pick up on defence in FA. If Stepan gets moved, it's for a 1st line centre like Duchene or a top-four D-man.
