Freeing up cap space and building 4 lines and defensive depth
Also, keep in mind everyone, all of these rosters on this website, whether they're from me, from you, or someone else, are fantasy, not reality.
Indeed, we put thought and effort into ideas as to how to improve rosters, and it involves good use of creative thinking, but none of us are truly experts on this subject as we are not actually in the unenviable position of GM but are instead just operating a GM simulator.
I'm not an expert on this subject, I will admit, but in the grand scheme of things, neither are you, as you're not an actual GM, so there's no need to get offended if you disagree with the roster.

Is he worth all that cap space at the expense of depth pieces though?
Being top-heavy on superstar talent is detrimental, not beneficial, in the modern NHL, you need 4 lines and deep defensive depth for your team to succeed.
Hence why teams like Vegas, NYI, and St. Louis which have no big-name superstars but can roll 4 lines and have deep defensive depth are doing so well in the modern NHL, while top-heavy offensive juggernauts with average-to-poor defense like Toronto and Edmonton aren't getting over the hump.

Kings - YotesLeafs trade

NMC only means you need the player to consent for them to be moved.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Rhea</b></div><div>Haha yes there is the obligatory cool guy shot at the Leafs...surely you can do better than that though because it was pretty pathetic. Cap issues yes, does that mean giving some of you best players away for crap? Probably not.
The trade idea is stupid regardless of how you look at it or has anybody come into say "Hey you know what? This Fiteme guy is a visionary and that is just beyond intelligent"?
Here let me check...ummm no and the reason is that it is dumb beyond belief and that is not even considering the NMC.</div></div>
"crap". Iafallo has had 43 points on a bad team this past season (second highest on the Kings behind Kopitar), and has been trending upward since his debut in 2017-18, plus he's only 26 years of age and just reaching his prime. Kempe had 32 points and played a large role in the Kings' big win streak they had towards the end of the season, adds grit to the team that was lost with Kadri, and he's only 23 years of age. Both of these are underrated skilled players that will produce for the Leafs without being a burden.

Kings - YotesLeafs trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Rhea</b></div><div>So the Leafs get rid of Marner and JT (who has a NMC) and get Kempe and Iafallo and the kings get them both (the 2 best players in the trade)...hmmm
Uh no</div></div>
Tell me more about how it's working so well for the Leafs now keeping those players to eat up their salary cap. This trade would relieve the Leafs of their cap issues, they'd still get to keep Matthews and Nylander while getting decent returns in Iafallo and Kempe, and they could use that extra cap money to fix depth issues. Tell me how is that a bad thing?

Didn't know Green was retired initially, and I fixed that mistake in the roster simulator - <a href="https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/360515?post_id=1718795">https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/360515?post_id=1718795</a>

You didn't even refute any of my claims.
Having the best player in the league is troublesome in the modern NHL, that's not an insult, that's a fact. Too much pressure on that player for the entire team to succeed, not enough on the rest of the team, and you have to pay that player extra cap money. Look at a team like Vegas, how successful they're doing without any superstar forwards, that's what the modern NHL is like. The NHL is not the NBA where you can LeBron James your way to a championship.
The Oilers in this trade would be keeping Draisaitl to build around, and would put themselves in cap heaven to add some great depth pieces to become a juggernaut in the Pacific. It was because of Draisaitl anyways, not McDavid, that the Oilers were able to get out of the basement after being the epitome of mediocrity in the past two seasons.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HabsFan9</b></div><div>You lost me with McDavid my friend</div></div>
Don't be fooled though, the Kings would be by far the losers of this trade.
McDavid would be the only "improvement" the Kings would get out of this trade, and even then, he'd be eating up 12 million of their cap space, plus they'd be overpaying for a mediocre Patrick Russel, Gaetan Haas, and especially Adam Larsson, leaving them with less than a million dollars of cap space left over. Plus, losing Matt Roy and Mikey Anderson would significantly hurt their defense, and losing Alex Iafallo and Blake Lizotte would hurt their scoring depth.
The Oilers, on the other hand, would improve significantly in defense and scoring depth by obtaining those aforementioned players as well as a young goalie in Cal Petersen whom would be a solid back-up for Koskinen, and they'd be freeing up over 12 million in cap space on top of that.
The primary reason a trade like this would never happen is because the Kings would be heavily fleeced by it and therefore wouldn't agree to it.
The Oilers honestly would be just fine, if not better.

Building Oilers depth
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GrinReaper</b></div><div>We are one yr from having all the cap space we need to address them problems so your point is mute
Neal will be package with a pick to have Seattle take him in the expansion draft freeing up another 5.75 mil in cap
Nurse will also be moved next yr as Broberg takes his spot freeing up another 5 plus mil in cap
This team will look and will be built completely different in 2021/22 and we don’t need to trade MsDavid to do that</div></div>
True, but you'd still have to settle for cheaper talent to keep the cap that low, while freeing up 12million for McDavid on top of what you're getting back for Neal and Nurse would allow you to spend more to build an immediate cup favorite while staying in cap-heaven.
Again though, this is just a fantasy-roster, and I will admit I'm not the best expert at hand regarding this subject.
The main idea behind this roster is to build the Oilers similarly to the Avalanche, by giving them a four-line team with a superstar forward (Draisaitl) in the top-line while also keeping them in cap-heaven for further potential improvement.

Building Oilers depth
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GrinReaper</b></div><div>The point is there’s not enough coming in return for McDavid let alone adding move oilers to the trade.</div></div>
Trading McDavid would be to free up cap space for potential depth-pieces, as well as get a decent return in Alex Iafallo, who had 43 points last season. Already with this roster, you'd have four complete lines and a complete blueline, and enough cap space to improve the third and fourth line as well as the blueline to build the depth needed to build a cup-contender. Plus, the RNH-Draisaitl-Yamamoto line, which I would argue was the main reason the Oilers got out of the basement this past year, would still be in-tact.
McDavid is the best player in the league, no doubt, but in today's NHL, you need depth, not top-heavy superstar talent, in order to be a cup-contender.

Building Oilers depth
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GrinReaper</b></div><div>Not sure how you call that building depth you trade Jones and he’s part of our depth
The star piece coming back is a undersized goalie
The kings don’t have enough first to make a deal like this happen
We sold already sold The Great One to the kings weren’t selling DcDavid to</div></div>
Caleb Jones would be traded for Matt Roy in this scenario, which would be an upgrade. Last season, Matt Roy had 18 points with a +16 plus-minus, while Caleb Jones only had 9 points with a -1 plus-minus.
Also, Cal Petersen is a heavier weight than superstar goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, and he had a .923 save percentage in 19 games with the Kings, and he's only 25 years of age, plus he'd be a backup to Koskinen.
Again, this wouldn't happen in real life, this is just a fantasy roster.
