You're right, but somehow in Colorado last year he took 509 faceoffs compared to MacKinnon 493. Landeskog also won 56.6% of his draws versus the 48.5% that MacKinnon won. I'm willing to work with him.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>flamesfan</b></div><div>So you think gio was better than hanifin and Tanev?</div></div>
Do I "think" Giordano was better than Hanifin and Tanev individually this past season? Yes. But that's merely my personal opinion.
So...let's take a look at the stats.
Giordano led the teams defense in the following statistical categories, Goals, Assists, Points, Shots on Goal, Shooting %, GWG, PPG, Hits, Blocked Shots and Time On Ice
Tanev led the teams defense in +/- and SH Time On Ice with 3:07 per game followed closely by Girodano at 3:03 per game.
Hanifin DID NOT lead the team in a single statistical category, he did however have more PIMs than Giordano. 18 to 14.
Now some may argue that Tanev is a better defender than Giordano and that's a valid discussion, but Tanev definitely isn't a better all around defensemen as he doesn't skate as well as Gio, nor does he have the offensive upside. This is backed up by the fact that Tanev averaged 12 SECONDS of PP Time On Ice.
Hanifin makes a great partner for Tanev as he is more of 2 way defender, leaning more towards the offensive end of the ice, therefore complimenting one another's style. Looking at Hanifin' PP Time On Ice and SH Time On Ice at 46 and 30 seconds respectively, this tells me that both coaching staffs (Ward and Sutter) didn't feel the need to play him on either first unit as there were better options. Even Stone, Mackey, Nesterov and your boy Valimaki who 'can easily do what gio does' all averaged more SHTOI than Hanifin.
If in fact Hanifin and Tanev were better than Giordano, one would think that the 'professionals' within the organization might make a push for their ice time to be increased???
Or were saving them for the playoffs...

Hanifin will take on more minutes and the role of the team’s best D, he already was this year. Valimaki will get a look in the top 4 but I imagine we bring in a 4/5 guy (like de Haan from Chicago or something) to support that. Gio will be phased out fairly easily I’d imagine.</div></div>
So Valimaki goes from being a healthy scratch for a number of games to being in the Flames top 4? And somehow this is going to move the team forward?
'Gio will be phased out fairly easily I'd imagine' is usually what coaches, GMs and scouts alike say about #1 dmen.
Any chance you can let me know which strain of weed you're smoking?

I personally don't see Samsonov cracking a top 5 list of goalies in the next decade, maybe a top 10 list.
Yeah, having 2 dmen who can eat up 25 minutes a night while making solid plays out of their own end is foolish, what ever was I thinking. Tampa should probably start looking to move on from one of Hedman or Sergachev in that case.

They may very well have a Burns in Carlson, but that didn't stop SJ from acquiring Erik Karlsson, why would it stop Washington? Brent Burns makes the Capitals top 4 much more intimidating and hard to play against, I'd think that'd be something of value when playing the Penguins, Bruins, Lightning, Panthers or Canes come playoff time.

Ottawa is of little concern to me as the San Jose 'Armchair GM'. They may not need Hertl, but it would be prudent to have some level of veteran leadership as the kids grow and learn to be pros. Moving out Burns and Hertl is an attempt to spread the money around, both positionally and with younger players as SJ is in full rebuild.

The Leafs are going to have to make some moves to keep Hyman.
As for the trade, I personally don't see Klefbom getting the return you describe.

*woof woof*
"Armchair GM" is a derogatory term for a person who regards themselves as an expert on hockey matters, despite having little to no actual experience in playing hockey. Alternatively, it can mean a hockey fan who does not participate in the actual sport.

And before you ask who they would move before that try everybody on the roster besides the top line, Makar, Girard, Newhook and Byram. Toews is not going anywhere.</div></div>
Not all Pretzels are straight. Graves would be another option, but obviously Toews is more desired. How would you go about building the Wings blueline?

But they could make a side deal with a team like Tampa for instance and take local boy Tyler Johnson (who can still play) and gain a good young player in Barre-Boulet as a sweetener plus get a 1st round pick. That's a better use of 5 mil than taking Nielsen's rotting hockey corpse and a 3rd Rd pick.</div></div>
You'll get no argument from me that there are better ways to spend $5M, but I can find plenty of other examples of NHL GMs making worse mistakes than this. We can all come up with a million different pie in the sky scenarios that make sense to us, but at the end of the day, it's nothing more than an exercise for fans as you and I and 'coga16' and 'ArakinSkywalker' are nothing more than keyboard jockeys.
