Only full NMCs require protection. Fleury has one, Niemi does not.

new chapter in the franchise
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>quinnjj</b></div><div>How does this trade help the Penguins?</div></div>
It moves Fleury whose value is very low and gets back a reasonable backup who can be exposed to expansion. In addition, Pittsburgh gets a pick with it too. So Pitt sheds salary, protects Murray, and gets a pick all in one simple trade. It beats a buyout.

Pens Dealine
The continued suggestions of basically nothing for good players is just embarrassing as a Penguins fan who understand the rest of the league. Explain how you got MAF to waive his NMC and how a bottom pairing defenseman who's UFA at the end of the season and a first round draft bust is worth a top pairing defenseman.

I doubt you fetch Duchene with that trade but the others seem pretty solid. Take out Pitlick and make it Puljujarvi and you might be talking.

Dubois trade (revised)
Gotta take off the homer glasses a bit. These trades heavily favor CBJ. Despite being 3rd overall pick, Dubois value is probably at its lowest right now coming off of a mediocre World Juniors.

Both these trades give way too much to the Penguins for very little going out. Neither could realistically happen.

Scenario #2: Trade Deadline

Terrible goaltending situation that led to a cup last year... We are in a sticky situation due to the expansions draft. Our goaltending is an asset that most of the league would be envious of had the issue of expansion not come up. Don't let this site brainwash into thinking there isn't value there just because you see a lot of people trying to move the same players.</i></div></div>
I'm not deluded enough to think that NJ has interest in giving up Schneider for Fleury and Cammalleri for an older UFA winger and an 8th overall pick who can't crack a top 7 or 8 Penguins defense. You might as well just trade them Fleury because they can't protect both and 100% chance that one of the two left exposed is taken by Vegas.
On top of that, inheriting that goaltending situation does them no good. NJ isn't making a Cup run this year even if they manage to make the playoffs.

Calgary
Admittedly I don't know a whole lot about Wideman or Wotherspoon but I just can't see Calgary giving away Brian Elliott and two picks for MAF. Both goalies have had great seasons and both have been garbage this year. What about Fleury makes him worth extra two picks. Pouliot, despite being an 8th overall pick, has no value at all. Everyone in the league with a small bit of research can see that he can't hack it in the NHL and maybe he never will.

Scenario #2: Trade Deadline
Woof. Lots of things wrong with this. Not only is this a rough deal for the Pens, it makes no sense for the Devils. Why would they give away their good goaltending situation to inherit our terrible one? I can't stomach that Cammalleri contract either. He's super streaky and at $5M until 2019 means we aren't going to be able to resign most of Sheary, Rust, Kuhnhackl, Wilson, Schultz, or Dumoulin. On top of all of that, Pittsburgh would still have to acquire another goalie who is eligible to expose for the expansion draft.

Fleury isn't worthless but he's doing the Penguins no favors. At this rate I'll be surprised if we're able to trade him for anything of value. Hopefully I'm wrong but I think we're looking at a buyout or a giveaway.

5th Cup
This is actually something new for Fleury, not opposed for what we'd get back but it's predicated on the fact that the Islanders would need to move Greiss or Berube and would be able to protect neither from the reaping.
I don't really know about Ryan Murphy but I just don't see much of any value in that for Carolina. Same for Yakupov, as much as I think it would be fun to have him. That's a pretty low price for St. Louis to give him away. The last trade seems like overkill. 8 is too many defensemen.

Not only is this a very unlikely deal because the values exchanged are just not in line. Calgary is giving up way more than Pitt. This also solves nothing for Pittsburgh as they would almost certainly be giving up Maatta or Dumoulin using a protection spot on Dougie.

There's a lot here but three players, two 1sts and two 2nds for Gaudreau? I love me some Johnny Hockey too but that seems really really steep. Especially seeing as those picks are probably top ten overall because this team is still terrible. Hahaha!

I don't really feel like adding Tatar just to lose Hornqvist is an upgrade though. That's why all these Fleury for a top 4D trades don't really work that well. This only works if it were someone like Werenski, Hanifin, etc. that won't require protecting.

What would it take to get Bozak?

I don't know how you can say that... Bozak: .63 ppg this season, Bonino: .44 ppg this season. Playing similar minutes, and Bozak is about 8 points better on faceoffs. Also factor in that Bonino often gets to play with Kessel and Hagelin who I think are probably better than whoever Bozak is playing with. Pens' 4th line has been pretty solid when Kuhn is in, I think Bozak would solve the 3rd line for this year and next year at least.</i></div></div>
See I don't agree with you there at all. The 3rd line doesn't need solving. It's been solid even when it's been Sheary-Bonino-Rust. Bonino has proven that he can step up and provide offense when it's needed and he also is one of our best penalty killers. As far as I know and can see in my quick research online, Bozak doesn't kill penalties.

Woof. Seems like we're giving a lot to get almost nothing back. Pittsburgh is giving away a proven starter goaltender, a developing young defenseman, a top defensive prospect (albeit underperforming), two solid young wingers, and a pick for an established top 4 defenseman, a backup goalie, and a bottom 6 winger. Also giving up a bunch of players who are on excellent deals. In fact, if my math is correct, Pittsburgh actually takes on salary from this. I don't think this works at all.
Edit: Pens would shed about $500K in cap. Did some math.
