I don't feel like this improves Pittsburgh's chances of winning now or moving toward a rebuild. Also, how does the McCann thing work out? Is Edmonton the primary custody owner? Does Anaheim get him weekends and every other holiday?

I feel like the Buffalo trade is actually one of those trades where the value might be adequate or decently close but it's a terrible move for both teams. Hard to say that the 8th overall pick is more valuable this year or next than Rust is to Pittsburgh. The next two, maybe three years are what count most with Crosby and Malkin already getting into their mid-30s. In addition, POJ should be close to cracking the roster and whatever assets Murray is eventually traded for could be used on a rental player.

Dumping Zucker like that is a pretty big yikes from me. It'll mean that we basically did Galchenyuk, Addison, 2021 1st, 2021 3rd for a 2021 1st.

Most of these are agreeable to me except Dumoulin. That is a +5 contract. How many good top pairing defensemen you see in the NHL making this kind of money? He's the most defensively solid guy in our core, has been consistently excellent at it for years, works with anyone we pair him with, etc. Absolutely incredible contract.

Pens - Different Approach
I mean I hope Pens could pull this off but I can't see Detroit taking on 3 years of JJ at his price for just a 3rd. I'd expect it to cost a 1st or high 2nd/prospect. Pens don't have much to offer.

I can't see why Pittsburgh does this. Rust is cheaper and is a known entity. I don't know anything about Ikonen, but Poulin is the Penguins' best forward prospect and those picks are too late to be effective in the short Crosby/Malkin window that remains but too soon to start the next rebuild.

Neal? Zero.</div></div>
Okay, fine, I concede that Neal has been a poorer asset than Oshie over the last few years, but that's such a tiny part of what I said, that it's nearly meaningless. You haven't justified the trade. What makes Oshie a better option than Edmonton trying to land one of the free agents that will be available this offseason for free? Why would Edmonton give up assets to get Oshie when they could probably land one of Hoffman, Dadonov, Granlund or Toffoli who are all younger for around the same amount of money?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Eli</b></div><div>Oshie was on pace for 31g 58 p this year, playing all over the top nine. He's able to play RW, C, or LD on the Caps' top power play, as needed. He singlehandedly defeated Russia in the Olympic shootout.
Also, the rumor is that Edmonton is trying to cut salary and is not sure they can qualify Athanasiou. If the cap had gone up $5M, they woudln't make this trade. It didn't. They want to add a top six wing. They get that, here. They wish he were 18 years old. Good luck with that, at this price.</div></div>
I don't see how Oshie is really that significant an upgrade over James Neal. Like Neal, Oshie is 33 now but will be getting paid $5.75M until he's 38. Yamamoto or Athanasiou could probably do just as well on that 4th forward slot on that PP. They've had all of 9 regular season games with Athanasiou, hardly enough to say that he can't work with their system. Maybe I'm out of touch here but it just seems like Edmonton is giving up the two most desirable of the three pieces involved in that trade. A 33 year old, overpaid Oshie isn't a desirable asset to me.

If you're going to throw that kind of money at Holtby (who I would imagine will want longer term than 4 years), why not just keep Markstrom who has been more solid, is younger, and is already a known entity in the organization?

Pens need a 3C most of all, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Pettersson for Zacha straight up became a thing. That being said, I'm sure he'll Jim it all up and do something else stupid like throw in ZAR or a 2nd.

As much as I wish they would, I can't see Calgary doing Murray for Bennett straight up, let alone downgrading picks for it. I feel like maybe if Pittsburgh gives up the 2nd and Calgary just gives up Bennett it could work. That being said, I don't know enough about Calgary to know.

Penguins 20-21
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>iFishyHD</b></div><div>Ennis is a much better offensive player than ZAR. Zach Aston Reese is an above average defensive player, and Ennis is about average. McCann is a good defensive center but needs to be surrounded by goal scorers. Comparing just raw point totals, Ennis had 70GP-16G-21A and ZAR had 57-6-7. Hornqvist is still good, but his cap hit is too high to allow us to truly upgrade the defense and 3rd line both. Smith is a slightly worse version of Hornqvist, but he also shoots the puck a lot more and controls the shot share more than Hornqvist when he is on the ice. Smith would even be a good option for the top 6 if Kapanen flames out in that role. Over the last 2 seasons Smith had 145 GP-39G-30A and Hornqvist 121GP-35G-34A.</div></div>
I could buy the concept of this if McCann were being relied on for scoring. If he does end up at 3C next season, the onus won't be on that line for scoring like it will be for the top two and PP. I can't see throwing away a really solid young defensive forward for a pick. You could convince me to trade away Hornqvist; I think he's declining quickly, but not ZAR. He's worth way more in Pittsburgh than any low round pick could offer.

I realize you probably would rather not, but I imagine Pittsburgh would rather you keep the picks and take Murray for Johnsson instead. Also wyd taking an anchor like Faulk? That contract is bad now, it's going to be abysmal by the time it ends.
