Intersting Marner trade from a Leafs fan - impact
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac555</b></div><div>What happens when Marner walks in two years?</div></div>
then the canes have to evaluate their team because if they are good why would he walk?

Most likely scenario
I think this is realistic and could see it playing out. Would love Keller or Cat over Schmaltz but not a bad plan B. Hall could be a nice fit but I think you have to remove the retention and then make it a third instead. Bruins won’t retain, especially for 2 years.
Soucy is a good target on the back end too. Missing a PP2 QB which might hurt but maybe we go crazy and go 5F on the second unit next year.

Going for the cup - final 2022 version
Respectfully to Mr. Bear…he’s not a top pair defenseman on a cup winning team. When I watch him play, sometimes I wonder if he needs his eyes check. The angles he takes to the puck are way off. Maybe he just needs glasses? Damn, I might be onto something there.
You are light a top 4 defenseman. The Canes were light a top 4 defenseman last year too - so I guess we agree.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GoCanes</b></div><div>Is it that different though? I mean, is it really light compared to last season? Our top 3 defenders are back. Don't forget, TDA was in the 3rd pairing for the first 1/3 of the year. The metrics on Slavin and a healthy Bear were strong. The second pairing is the same and very strong. I don't see Soucy and Chatfield as a downgrade vs Cole and Smith. Smith was a winger for crying out loud and barely got a contract last offseason. And he could easily be brought back into this roster if needed. He's cheap. Chatfield was solid as 3RD last season and has earned it.</div></div>

Shooting for the moon with JT
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>The_Rocket</b></div><div>There are so many times a player has been moved for more than that</div></div>
What players????? Go to the trades tool and find me the last time a player was moved for more than that. Hagel got two first rounders exclusively because of his contract and Tampa's unique cap situation. The last player before that to get back two first round picks without some sort of pick swap was Brayden Schenn in 2017!!!!! Both of those guys also just got two first rounders and did not bring A level prospects back. Eichel got a first and Krebs. They were lucky to get Tuch because they needed to balance salary. O'Reilly got a first, tage thompson, and a bunch of junk. Mark Stone didn't even get a first!

Canes have no need for PJ. We already have too many RW to begin with, and PJ doesn’t score enough to really help the Canes solve their scoring problem.

No Letang But Discount Malkin Scenario
Canes hang up. Pesce isn’t getting moved unless a better defenseman on a just as good contract is coming back.

Tkachuk experiment - unlikely
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GoCanes</b></div><div>I love Tkachuk but why not just sign JG instead and save the assets. Or just offer sheet him and give up the 4 first round picks and deal Necas/Gunler to recoup some 1st round draft capital?</div></div>
Yeah def could go that route but I just figured if it came to it they’d try to negotiate a trade before another OS similar to the kk situation. This is pretty much the equivalent of 4 firsts anyways

Ottawa declines.
We don't need another goalie for our team in the minors.

This team can win the cup and is possible
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GoCanes</b></div><div>I don't disagree with your commentary surrounding the uncertainly with the centers, but KK is clearly the #2 center given what he was just paid. Necas (if still on the roster) has a shot I guess. But they aren't paying KK to play 4C again (Aho is clearly 1C and Staal is clearly 3C/Checking C). Drury seems perfect to slide into 4C as a rookie that is responsible defensively and likely moves to 3C next year.</div></div>
i think i would target somone like copp who can also play c as a backup. and iff kk works out he can slot in on the 2-3rd line aswell. but that just my take! we'll see if kk can take the big step bext year. i would just feel better with a back up in case he does not.

to be contenders it would probably make more sense to get only one o forsberg or kane and get a better center, cause as of right now the center line is too full of question mark.

Trade for goals
Morrow has to be on the table realistically but I’d still do it. Swap Morrow with Honka and add a 2nd for retention.
Problem you have to also solve for is you fit in everybody in 2 years if the cap only goes up 2M at that point. I think it’ll be doable since you should find an extra 3-4m cleared from Staal (either he signs cheap deal or you get cheaper replacement to play bottom 6 C), Skjei will be gone so that’s another 5m. Also think the Nino deal has to be 2 years unless he takes a discount for added years.
You’ll probably need close to 20m just for raises to Cat Jarvis Aho Turbo Pesce Drury over the next two years. Plus replacements and potential raises for guys like Fast Soucy goalies and TDA. It quickly becomes a high wire act.
