Namestnikov, Fast, Simmonds...they are all the same. To think Kovalchuk is special enough tthat teams will line up for when there are other and frankly better options out there, thats just living in a fantasy world
If you think Kovalchuk can get you a 2nd, then Avs better be getting calls on matt Nieto, those 3rd line 25 point guys are just too good to pass up</div></div>
19 points in 30 games played this year. On pace for a 51 point year over 82 games. You done cherry picking stats?

Trade precedent shows he's closer to a 2nd than he is to a 4th, which was your claim.

Who said you had to win anything? He's bringing smiles to the room, and players are enjoying playing. They don't have that slump on their faces anymore. That's valuable internally.
I'm not advocating for resigning him the next season.

Kovalchuks Actual Value
I think people forget that value is relative to every team. No player has a single objective value. What Kovalchuk is worth to the Habs is different than what he's worth to LA, and is different from what he's worth to the Penguins, or to Detroit, or to Dallas, or to any team.
But the range where supply can meet demand is likely 2nd-3rd range.

Thread:
Kovalchuks Actual Value
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Old_Snowman</b></div><div>You're absolutely correct. I'm sure that all NHL GM's have completely forgotten that past and only know Kovy for a guy who put up 10 pts in 13 games. The ink on their pens is getting so wet waiting to sign on the dotted line to complete the trade for a 2nd as we speak.</div></div>
Maybe I didn't give enough nuance in what I said, but a player in another context with 10pts in 13games would fetch a 1st rounder. Heck, even Reaves fetched a 1st rounder. Kovalchuk is worth anywhere between a low 2nd and a low 3rd (since only playoff teams would be interested anyway). Does that mean everyone is in a hurry to get him? No. As I said, I think there will be very few people interested in Kovalchuk because he doesn't fit more teams' styles. But if a trade happens, it's likely in the fair value range I mentioned. No need for your sarcasm.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>coga16</b></div><div>The role that Kovalchuk was in LA, a 3rd line winger, is what he will be on most contending teams. What he is on Montreal is a top 3 or 4 foward in usage. Hes not getting that production in a lesser role, he will be more LA Kovy vs Montreal Kovy once he is moved to a deeper team. Thats where the dispute in his value lies. 10 games of him getting over used in an effort to pump up his value wont take him from Nothing to a top 60 pick. It will take him from nothing to a 4th with conditions</div></div>
Even effective 3rd line wingers go for the 2nd to 3rd range at trade deadline, depending what the market is like. GM's must have also not forgotten that LA's team strategy wasn't a good fit for Kovalchuk. A lot of teams will pass. Some teams might think he'd be a fit--to those teams, he can be worth that range of picks.
And if he isn't, well, oh well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ the trade just won't happen

But I will admit that I haven't seen him play in MTL.
Does 13 games really make NHL gms forget about his time in LA?</div></div>
I think he regretted LA from the start. Even then he was on pace for 40 pts in LA, just was a matter of the coach not liking him and thinking he should be playing a role he was never going to play.
But I have watched Kovy since he played in Atlanta and I dont thinking seen him hit this much, skating is still so so but the effort looks like it's back and that's what has been lost.
Now, does that mean he keeps it up on a contender that he is playing less minutes on? That's the big question

I don't think anyone realistically expects a non conditional 2nd rounder in return. Realistically it'll be a conditional pick. The better Kovy and the team do together, the better the pick gets for Montreal.

Weber's Contract = nothing, its terrible, no one should want anything to do with that. Keep your bad ideas to yourselves.</div></div>
Honestly just sound like bias Leafs fans. Weber is in Norris conversations this year and is exactly the player Toronto needs, a player teams hate playing against.
His contract is an arguement that I have heard endlessly and honestly, its ridiculously over exaggerated.
He gets hurt, goes on LTIR and costs nothing
He wants to retire? Send him to Nashville for a kings ransome.
Declines in play? Trade him to the cheap owner wanting to reach the cap floor but only pay $1 million bucks.
Until any of those things happen though you get a stud top 4 dmen with 40+ points a year, one of the best leaders in the game and a dman who can teach your young score.
So ya, right now if Toronto wanted Weber it would be for a premium.
And it would be a move that would make Toronto cup favorites for the duration of Marners and Mathews tenure as Leafs until they leave in free agency at the end of thier current contracts.

If Tony DeAngelo Gets Over 60 points What is He Worth
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Habs69</b></div><div>You got a young dman on pace to crack 60 points. Why do you want to trade him?</div></div>
The argument would be that they have a surplus of offensive RHD (Fox and Lundkvist on the way). Not to mention they have Trouba long-term. The thought would be to trade Deangelo to address other needs. There is also the issue of cap situation. But there is also an idea that NYR trade Brady Sjkei, and move Deangelo to the left to pair with Trouba.
Funny you ask <a href="/users/Habs69" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@Habs69</a>, because MTL really needs a left handed shot defenseman. How much would you be willing to pay for Sjkei?

Rangers should trade trouba and sign dangelo. I don’t think trouba will get you much, but dangelo is a stud, I wouldn’t trade him.
Two teams that come to mind that need RD (who will get a top 10 pick) : Anaheim and Detroit, but I doubt they’d give up their 1st rd pick for dangelo.
