They gave up half their roster
As a Canes fan, we all saw this coming, but not quite the deal expected. Impressed that Pitt was able to move the contracts they did but shocked that they got so little retention AND had to retain on Petry. They actually added salary? Looks like a minor move gets Guentzel activated, but what sticks out to me is the depth getting a bit hammered here. I can see why Waddell backed out. Not paying $10M a year for the next four years for this guy. This goes either really well or really bad.

Not making the playoffs but also not bottom 5

Davidson (you) seem pretty committed to the rebuild. I don't see Toews Kane or Cat leaving. Toews seems to have improved as the season went on and I doubt he goes 19 games next season without a goal again. Despite finishing 8th they can still win the lottery and get a top 2. I think obviously either way you get Shane Wright or Connor Bedard is a win and getting Bedard doesn't automatically mean 15 straight playoff appearances either (take Edmonton and Toronto for example).
Kane made it clear if Cat is gone, he is gone. I also think if Kane is gone, Cat's numbers suffer. I don't know the stats but how many of Cat's goals have Kane grabbing one of the assists and more importantly, the primary assist. Not that Cat isn't good without Kane, but Kane is that good that he makes everyone around him better.
Anywho, I'm more or less hoping to give up this year's 1st and not make much changes to the overall roster for next season, be bad, and really hope/pray for a top 2 pick.

On to the next trade
If we do go the route of taking on Mrazek's cap dump I'd hope for more in return than this deal. I'd also rather let him get shelled in the NHL and let Soderblom play more in the AHL

I completely agree that this is the best team they've had in a decade, but the unfortunate thing is that the likelihood of the Leafs having to play either Florida or Tampa in round 1 is hilariously terrifying.

Your spending to little on Giordano, you will get outbid that way. Other wise this is a very good team. I would try and keep Holl though because he is an incredibly usefull bottom 4 paring player.

Certainly not from Boston. Vaak has been really good for us since being called up almost a month ago, forced his way into a regular role prior to being concussed. Borgstrom does nothing to make the offense better at the moment.

cap crunch
What exactly is the point in trading away Dadonov for nothing and holding on to $6.5M in cap space? If Stone is shut down for the remainder of the regular season there is no reason to do this as the cap doesn't matter anymore once the regular season ends.

Jets will be sellers, even though Kubalik is an RFA they shouldn't be trading that 1st round pick, they could use a scoring winger though.

Should Dach Get Traded and Other TDL Stuff
Kirby's still young. He's had flashes and will most likely be a high end 2C. People forget this is his first "normal" season. Calling him a bust is a joke, you don't expect a 3rd overall pick in a draft that was up in the air from 3-12 overall to be a HOF. Maybe some of the players drafted after him will be better but that happens every year. Zegras is the only one you can definitively say is going to be better than Dach. I will be looking to resign Kirby longterm in the offseason

There is still plenty of time for him to develop (see Ryan Hartman). And in the interim he will be a great fit in the bottom 6 and can float up and down the lineup. He should definitely be moved to wing with his abysmal FO%. I just hope that in realizing this, him and his agent don't try to command a pay day more than $2mil, MAYBE $2.5mil. If any trade happens I think he should be used as a piece for a top pairing LD. And if it's COL, I guess Girard would be the guy cuz I don't see them moving on from Devon Toews.

Let's face the facts... we have seen enough out of Dach to draw a few conclusions about the type of player he is going to be in this league and that is not a point scorer. To be honest I'm not sold on his upside as a third-line center in a shutdown role either because of his abysmal faceoff ability. It's obvious that Dach is a BUST in the context of a third overall pick. However, he is still a useful player and could theoretically be a useful piece on a championship team assuming this team gets to that level eventually.

Important to remember Kirby Dach didn’t pick himself third overall. Looking like he could become a third-line, checking, shutdown role which is still a valuable role. In the month of JAN he has allowed the fourth-fewest opponent scoring chances per minute among Hawks forwards. I don't believe he will ever become a top scoring #1C but can be an effective player. Trading him now will only net another struggling prospect.

I like the trades and the forward signings, but it might be a better idea to keep Coghlan in the lineup and sign a veteran near league min to be the 7D. Also might be a little difficult to get all of those free agents to sign for those prices, but it’s possible.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CrazyK04</b></div><div>You absolutely hit the nail on the head here. This ROSTER is loaded. On paper, this is a Third round playoff team. The problem is the mental toughness. They are all in their own heads. Patrick Kane, my favorite player by far, has been god awful this year. Seth Jones's offense is on point, but he's getting left out to dry with Fleury. He can't do everything at once. As I watch him, 3 out of 5 times, he has his man covered. He is one of the best two way defensemem in the league. He's not a bad player by any stretch of the imagination. everyone involved with the organization (players, staff, coaches, fans) are in just an awful mental state right now. They are starting to believe that they are a bad team and that each individual is doing a poor job and its hurting them. Special teams is on fire. Whoever is the special teams coach needs a raise. However, you can't play trap hockey with Kane, DeBrincat, Kubalik, and Jones. You just can't. The best defense is a good offense. They need to get rid of the players that are neutral (DeHaan, Gustafsson, Strome, Khaira, Carpenter). They don't bring good defense or good offense consistently enough. With the current roster, they need a coach that lets good offensive players play offense.</div></div>
This is all a pretty fair point. I think the roster will definitely benefit from new coaching and management though. If this happened 8 years ago, they'd be pissed. Now they sound like they're going through a high school break-up. Get mad and stay mad, that's the best way to play with an edge in this league. Right now, they have no edge.

I've liked Strome in the limited minutes hes had this year, but the rest I agree with. I have to say, wasnt thrilled with the Jones trade/contract, and im still not, but hes been far from the issue since the first game. I just think this roster needs a deep cleanse. I think we could benefit from selling off some of the older guys and rebuilding around Cat, Dach, and Jones. After a couple of loaded draft classes.

Probably.
If we look at Calgary they fired their coach midway and brought in a new one
With the amount Chicago invested if they continue to underperform like this 100% there will be a new coach come November/December.

I haven’t watched much Chicago games but I heard Colliton is not a strong coach in terms of tactics. He insists on playing a trap system despite having so much firepower. And I couldn’t understand the Strome scratching. In terms of analytical results, he’s quite strong. Can’t he at least be on the third line with Johnson & Hagel?
