I can't speculate on that. I do know that team's like to win cups. And given that the Capitals have the oldest roster in the league and the majority of those older players signed well into their 30's and less than a handful of actual NHL prospects in the pool, I'd say that the probability of winning a cup is going to go decently down in a few years.
So it makes sense that a team like Washington would take their 1st and one of the few top prospects they have to make a move to win a cup. It's not the greatest long term strategy but the Capitals have set themselves up for this by having 9 F's on the books through at least 2 more seasons, and that's not even considering if Ovi resigns or Vrana signs an extension. So the Caps in this position kinda have to keep pace with Pitt and Carolina and Tampa if they're going to have a legit shot at another cup over the next couple years. That's not going to happen through drafting/developing, that's goin to happen through asset acquisition.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Sagecoll</b></div><div>yeah I mean according to Bob that's the minimum it's going to take...
as he describes it "1st + Top Prospect + prospect or cond pick"
McMichael is a top prospect, Protas is a borderline top prospect. And obviously then you add from there.
It sounds ridiculous, but so does every trade made this deadline season, this is the market.</div></div>
I'm just saying, it wouldn't be very prudent to trade McMichael for a rental, especially since McMichael and Alexeyev are our two best prospects in a VERY top heavy system.

Washington Next Season
Only problem here is there isn't a lot of cap coming off the books for the next off-season where the Caps will need to re-sign Ovechkin, Vrana, and Samsonov.

What IF
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>InfamousJB</b></div><div>Honestly I was never really on the Holtby bandwagon, not saying he is horrible.. I am simply a fan of moving guys with large contracts prior to them falling off a cliff.. especially when we have a top goalie prospect, I mean you either drafted him to eventually replace holtby or to trade him.
And I am not a fan of signing guys past 30 to gargantuan contracts either, no matter how much 'the fans love him' -(Oshie)</div></div>
Whenever McPhee talked about how he approached the draft, he always said he trusted his staff (which included MacLellan) to list the prospects in order of who was most valuable, and he didn't deviate from their list. I think they picked Samsonov because he was a potentially great player available at the tail end of the first round, who, like Kuznetsov, may have been passed over by other teams over uncertainty as to whether he would come to the NHL to play with them.
I could certainly see the Caps trading Holtby or Grubauer this summer, but it's pointless to speculate on their respective values before the playoffs. Here's hoping they each win two series.

I mean we are the team that gave up PF to nashville for ERAT.........</div></div>
I think you mean FF lol
