3 years + arbitration are you kidding me? He doesn't want to go to arbitration, no player does. He doesn't want to do another contract for 1 year to hit FA. That's like saying Matthews wanted 4 years instead of 5 because he'd do the last in arbitration. Use your brain! On top of it he had a great career year at this point. His leverage is through the roof. He doesn't care what the leafs want. It's not all about what the leafs want. The point was very clear, you have to GIVE to GET! Meaning if he takes less, he gets his ideal term. Which is 4 years. It's called negotiating. Try using your brain instead of believing some sports writer who lives in his mom's basement with his click bait website with imaginary sources.
You also miss the point on the 8 year contract. He doesn't want to come out of a contract at the tail end of his prime! No player in their right mind wants to do that. Hitting FA is the biggest payday they will ever get. They want to hit that in their prime years at 26-27 years old. Not 30 or 29. That's how you get the most money for the longest term. The odds someone is giving him a big money deal for 7 or 8 years at 30 is much lower than at 26 where they will pay him till he's 33 or 34. With the possibility of still landing another decent deal on the back end if he can still play.
On top of it, he'd miss the HUGE increase in salary cap that is coming with expansion and new TV deals. Why in the hell would any player knowingly do that. The simple answer is, they wouldn't.

You just over here trolling nonsense. There is a reason players want deals right to their FA hits. What Matthews signed has become the new expectation in the league.</div></div>
Like I said ...no clue
I am sure you don’t get it but once he signs for 3 or 6 or 7 years you will see but I am sure you will hide under you rock
3x9.5 6 or 7 11+. 4 years is not even on the table. Write it down and come back when you see reality
