You also miss the point on the 8 year contract. He doesn't want to come out of a contract at the tail end of his prime! No player in their right mind wants to do that. Hitting FA is the biggest payday they will ever get. They want to hit that in their prime years at 26-27 years old. Not 30 or 29. That's how you get the most money for the longest term. The odds someone is giving him a big money deal for 7 or 8 years at 30 is much lower than at 26 where they will pay him till he's 33 or 34. With the possibility of still landing another decent deal on the back end if he can still play.
On top of it, he'd miss the HUGE increase in salary cap that is coming with expansion and new TV deals. Why in the hell would any player knowingly do that. The simple answer is, they wouldn't.

I don’t get what you’re saying? Who said anything about 8 years? He was offed 11 million for 8. They will give that for 7 in a minute.
4 years lol. Really? The leafs don’t want 4 years because of beckoning a free agent and Marner don’t want it because he can take 3 years and arbitration in the 4th year that will probably be worth a lot more
