If you want to buy into bs narratives, sure. The reality is that Laine factually has a higher g/gp rate and an almost identical p/gp rate over his career and didn't spend the majority of his career getting set up by Patrick Kane.

With minor quibbles over what picks are included, I think this looks good for all four teams involved. I'd do the Columbus deal as a Columbus fan, and probably wouldn't even complain much if the pick coming from Calgary were a worse one. LA's going to need a cheap backup, and Vladar's a good choice. The Leafs swap is the one that gives me the most pause because it feels a little heavy for Calgary.

More Fun Permutations
So CBJ's 2 biggest needs (by a mile btw) are a top line center and top pair RHD to pair with Werenski.
And you're proposing that they......trade their best shot at both of those......for a 2 year rental that plays wing.....before they're even in their window to be good....
Just...why?

I'd absolutely love that for Columbus. Totally agree with your reasoning in a previous comment that he'd be perfect for this team. But Tavares says hard no.

He isn’t available and even if he was the cost would be significantly higher than this. He’s produced like a top line center for two straight seasons and he hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down. I guess guys who are 6-4 and can skate have the ability to age gracefully lol.

I balk at the 34OA being included for a goalie, but I'm not opposed to the deal in theory. Perhaps you could take Tarasov back along with a lesser pick?

That’s just simply not true. Anaheim, if interested, would not turn down an opportunity to gain extra draft picks in a great draft. Anaheim does not have an extra 1st this year and they are clearly in a rebuild. And bc of the strength of this draft class 1st round picks have more weight behind them. Besides Carlsson, Will Smith has been flying up draft boards. He is going to BC next season and to be honest fits Anaheim’s rebuild better. The World Championships is coming up along with the NHL Combine. Things could definitely change between now and then. Connor Bedard is the only player assured to go 1OA. The Jackets would never give up a player like Jiricek to move up one spot. That’s a ridiculous ask.

Jiricek is the top defensive prospect in the NHL right now with Hughes/power/Sanderson graduating. There’s a small gap between fantilli and Carlson as prospects in the eyes of NHL scouts certainly not enough to include one of the best if not the best overall prospect in the NHL.
Like you said jackets don’t consider this at all and the ducks probably don’t consider the original proposal unless they don’t have a clear favorite between fantilli/michkov/carlson.

The market value calculation on these cards is very flawed, which should be obvious to anyone who watches a decent number of games. Werenski even has a higher percentile rank in almost every category.
He's better in every individual offensive category, but has a lower overall offensive +/- than Toews? His defensive +/- is massively skewed from one rough year in 21-22 where he was playing a carousel of partners after Jones was traded away, including a large part of the season with a young Andrew Peeke who was in way over his head. This year Peeke was better, and still set the CBJ franchise record for worst +/- in a season.
Toews has been playing with the best dman in the league, on one of the best teams in the league, which has inflated his numbers. Also, Werenski is four years younger. I'll take Z 7 days a week and twice on Sunday.

Disagree. Jarmo signed Gaudreau and that is an investment that he needs to take advantage of. If he waits and waste Gaudreau’s good years then that signing becomes an albatross. I expect Jarmo to be aggressive this summer. He has assets to trade and lots of cap room. But as far as the trade goes, I don’t expect Jarmo to deal for a goaltender. I want to see a more competent defense in front of Elvis before I write him off.

That contract has already curdled.
- I get the incentive for taking on Edmunson - we need a B4 LD who can fill in for where Gavvy was, but we can find a better, cheaper option either in UFA or in the trade market. For example.
- Points for taking a big swing on the PHI trade, but I wouldn't make it. Hayes can probably be had for a '24 2nd and some scraps, and I'm not sure the remaining package gets you Hart. That Elvis contract is going nowhere anytime soon - still too early for a buyout, and not worth giving up what it would take to move the contract. A porous D has done Elvis no favors, and while I'm not saying he is going to turn back into a brick wall anytime soon, funny things tend to happen when you don't have a god-awful D playing in front of a G, not to mention Lars won't be coaching in two years (or maybe even next year).
Goalies are voodoo. Someone who everyone was convinced was washed can all of a sudden make a big turn around with the proper players/ system is in front of him. *Cough cough*

Quoting: ARMCHAIRGMOFTHEYEAR

Flyers decline, Merzlikins is a player that's gonna have to be dumped imo, or bought out that contract is just not great for how he's played the last 2 years - I think he can be a good goalie again but currently his value is very negative.
Also I know the rumors of Hart being available from Friedman, but I can't see them trading Hart unless the return is too good to pass up, and the best asset here is a late first. Just from the way Torts has backed all year and how Briere has talked about where the team is at in the media. They've been pretty clear that they want to rebuild, but that doesnt mean trade young players that could be core pieces.(Like Chicago has) Hart is the only true franchise building piece as a 24 YO, and Goalies typically hit their primes in their late 20's.

Torts played a system that worked well with Elvis, and those were his two best years. While I don't think the value is exactly there, I wouldn't scoff at Merzlikins and Torts reuniting, especially if Briere decides to go full rebuild with the Flyers and finally get them back on track.

Not to mention Myers being thrown in there. Jackets certainly can't afford him, and Vancouver needs to be adding to move his contract anywhere (and he's got a 10-team NTC, and I'd be shocked if CBJ weren't on it).

No, it's far stupider. Gudrbanson makes sense when you consider they weren't expecting Gaudreau at all and needed a more physical presence among their defense. Trading their newly appointed captain that's just starting a 4 year extension for a 1 year cap dump that should net them significant picks would be among the stupidest moves in team history and possibly league history.
