Washington Capitals signed Alex Ovechkin (5 Years / $9,500,000 AAV)
That's a lot of term for a 35 year old. He is the face of their franchise though.
Not a good hockey signing but a good business signing.

This is probably not a good contract but I don't think anyone should care. This contract allows Ovechkin to retire a Capital, possibly break Gretzky's goal record, and could see Ovi break into the top-20 for all-time games played. He's apt to pass Fedorov after next season and could pass Kovalev as the NHL all-time GP from a Russian-born player in as little as 2 seasons.
Ovechkin (Crosby for that matter too) have been in the NHL since I've had a vested interest in the sport. I don't know if I'm personally ready to see either retire: I'll happily take another 5 years of Ovechkin and enjoy that time as I still have it.

He should have been less than 100 goals away from breaking Gretzky's goal record.
2004, his rookie year was the canceled season. Using Matthews as an example, I think it's easy to say a 19 year old Ovie would score 40 goals.
2012, lockout season, minus 34 games. At the scoring pace he was on that season; add another 20 goals.
2019 and 2020 Covid seasons, cost him 40 games played. At the pace he was scoring at; add another 20 goals.
By comparison ; Gretzky had only one work stoppage during his career, the 1994 lockout. Which cost him 36 games, but at his scoring rate that season, maybe add another 8 goals to his total.
oh. and also this contract should have been $40 million for 5 years, making it a $8 million AAV, just like his jersey number.

Caps equivalent to the ask for eichel
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Kylonetic8</b></div><div>Honestly, this is tempting. Cap is screwed again though.</div></div>
Yeah you have to make a couple moves to make it work. I actually just posted a new ACGM with a Kuznetsov trade, an Eichel trade, and moving out Schultz for salary and it actually works out.

Before someone points out Smith is a forward and Schultz is a defenseman:
Smith is a middle six forward with one year left on his contract. Schultz is a top 4 RHD with one year left on his contract, making 1m less than Smith. I consider their values to be pretty equal.
Hague is a LHD prospect picked 34th overall in 2017. Alexyev is a LHD prospect picked 31st overall in 2018.
Krebs is a C prospect picked 17th overall in 2019. McMichael is a C prospect picked 25th overall in 2019.

As a Caps fan, I both 1) know this contract sucks and 2) am super happy about it. We know the Caps will be a dumpster fire soon, but we don’t care. We just want Ovi to retire a Cap and have a fighting chance at Gretzky’s record (which he would beat easily if it weren’t for lockouts and COVID, sigh).

Imagine thinking that Ovechkin can’t break the record. He doesn’t even need to have any 50 goal seasons ever again and he can still break it relatively easily.

Totally agree. When Pavelski left SJ it divided fans, broke hearts and destroyed the chemistry in the locker room and on the ice. I know Pavs isn't as big as Ovi but he was our homegrown captain. Ovi leaving Caps makes zero sense and paying a bit of a price for it...so what - Ovi is the Capitals.

It literally doesn't matter if the contract is good or not.
The only thing the entire organisation should be focused on for the next 5 years is breaking Gretzky's record. **** winning, do something that will never be done again.

I think there's 31 other teams that would have signed him to this same contract. You really think he's getting anything lower than $9m? Or anything less than 3 or 4 years? That was never going to happen.

The value he's brought to this team far outweighs what he's been paid and will be paid. It's basic economics, kid.

The fact that he's staying and the value he's brought to this franchise over the years automatically makes it a good signing.

Looking at the contract alone without considering the significance of the player, the term is a year or two long but I mean come on, it's Ovi, how could you not like that contract as a Caps fan

Might be a bit too much term, but it'll be completely worth it if he breaks the all-time goal record in that time, and it means even more if he does it in a caps jersey.

You could get a Vanecek like player for only a 2nd round pick.
So Francis play should have been drafting Dillon, flipping him for 2x2nd and drafting a goalie elsewere or getting one trading away one of the 2nd and keeping the other.
Damn did the drop the ball on creating value...

This is a bit of an overpay but I think other teams know that Winnipeg is basically limited to being unable to sign anyone in free agency and can't trade for anyone with any kind of trade protection lol. The Jets reportedly tried to get Nate Schmidt to waive multiple times before pivoting for Dillon

WSH gets the dub here. Got a tad too much for a D they couldn't really afford to keep.
