Who said anything about not liking Gardiner? I would like to see him stay in the lineup. But I find it hard to believe that they can afford to re-sign him. I'd rather sees the Leafs balance their d-core pairings and get something in return (i.e. Draft Picks), or lose him à la JVR, Bozak, Komarov.

Who gives a crap about performance bonuses when you are winning? Tyler Myers is a younger better version of Hainsey. If anything the defence would be status quo if not slightly better.

It's funny how people complain that Leafs management must preach patience and develop within. Yet the second that an offensive juggernaut line up is put together the only thing I hear is "you don't have a good defence". Well, how the hell are you supposed to see what you have unless you push your top d-prospects into those roles? Also, if your preaching patience then 2020-21 would yield more then enough free cap space (per Marleau's departure) to bring on a decent d-man without sacrficing your core lineup.

Aside from the first round draft pick acquired. Carrick, Hull, Ozhiganov & Rosén can fight over Zaitsev's spot. And see which one of them wants it more.

They will have to pay there 6 million in performance bonuses for matthews and marner. as overages.
which then leaves 25 million to sign matthews in the 10-11Mill range Marner in the 6-7 range, 5 Defenseman, top 6 winger, and back up goalie.
not going to happen. I think they will ruin there team by getting tavares</div></div>
I guess if Sidney Crosby was available and willing to listen/sign with the Leafs than that would ruin the team too? Good players bring out the best in other players. Bottom line is that if you want a top-2 defenceman than you'll most likely lose (Nylander+) in a trade. I'd rather have a team that has two bottom pairing lines that play fast offensively as well as hard defensively. P.S. who goves a crap about performance bonuses if the team is dominating in the standings.

The only way to get JT and still keep the future affordable.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LoganOllivier</b></div><div>I hear what you are saying, which is why I said in my explanation that he'd sign the 1 year and immediately sign an 8 year extension which he can do legally. The CBA allows teams to work on extensions once they are in the final year of their deal, and since this is a 1 year deal he can effectively sign the two contracts back to back. So the Leafs in their negotiations could say, lets do a 1 year max value and then sign an 8 year deal worth x amount of dollars. This would give him the security of a long term deal and the Leafs the flexibility of stretching the money out over a longer term. He's likely to get around 10-11 on a 7 year deal, possibly a little less on an 8 year deal from the Islanders. My idea would give him equal or higher dollars but over an additional year or two. On top of that, he'll be able to play on a team that looks poised to become one of the best in the League for years to come. Its a win win on both sides.
I generally say no way to Tavares because he's leaving his prime and is looking for big money that will pay for the money left on the table in his 20's. That just isn't good economics, however, my idea does mitigate much of the risk.</div></div>
You make a good point LoganOllivier. This type of deal I could see happening... and should be taken advantage of more often since both the player and organization get exactly what they want (max dollars upfront and term). Bottom line is that at a certain point elite players tend to want to go to a team that is trending upwards as opposed to just status quo. If I was JT, I could care less that Lou or potentially Trotz was a part of the NYI organization with the hope that things turn around. As for the Nylander trade, I think that you could still keep him and nix the Tanev idea.

MAPLE LEAFS 2019-20
The team would not be in compliance with the start of the season because the team's current cap hit minus the LTIR player (i.e. Horton) cap-hit would be greater than the league salary cap. Thus, the reason for shedding Horton's contract via trade along with Zaitsev. As for the picks... sure, it would be a lot to give away. But would Leafs fans really care if both Karlsson & Doughty were already locked into dual long-term contracts? Or that they still had young assets in the farm system? I seriously doubt it! As for the dollar amount, I could see these two players agreeing to this amount knowing that they had the chance to play and WIN together long term.
Nylander's contract was intentionally created as a bridge deal until the Leafs have more cap space. Personally, I don't think that he is worth $6.5M yet. As for Marner, who know's? Maybe $7M will be his asking price. But that crack in the road will not occur for another season to make this Armchair-GM scenario happen. Thanks for your input & honesty!

Leafs for the Cup
Love It! What a great way to lure JT to the Leafs. Not sure if it could actually happen? But it's a fun concept none the less. And if the Leafs make the playoffs and actually win a round, Tavares would surely sign a modest long-term deal with the buds - especially given all of the endorsement deals he would garner in T.O. Your defencive line up looks a lot better too.

Dubas Strikes
This is a pretty daring move for the Leafs to pull off. Sure! we would be losing Nylander, but it would give Marner the opportunity to jump onto a line with Matthews long-term. And with the signing of Tavares, that second line still looks dangerous. More importantly, you've addressed the need for a defensive upgrade with a very cap friendly contract in Dumba.
You've also opened the door for other potential trades (i.e. Gardiner) come the US Thanksgiving and/or trade deadline should the need arise. I do however think that McElhinney will be moved before the season starts to avoid waiver issues with Sparks & Picard. And at the rate, the Marlies are going I would not like to lose those two anytime soon.

Perhaps! But they could use an added draft pick for 2018 along with a young defenceman to fix their crapshoot of a team.

Leafs with two trades + Carlson
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>danni04</b></div><div>I will start with the extensions. The contract for Carlson seems bit too big and bit too long, but okay. But 7 year 1M extension for Komarov? He's currently on 2.95M and low-cap contracts usually aren't that long. Given that he's 31, 2-3 year 2.3M is much more realistic in my opinion.
Now to the trades. While I like the idea of adding experience with Spezza and Methot, the trade is just so uneven. The reason is because both JVR and Bozak are unrestricted free agents, so there no such thing as rights to them. Hence the trade is heavily leaning toronto's way.
The other trade is skewed Edmonton's way soooo much. 4 players and 2 extra draft picks for moving from no. 25 to no. 10? Even without the players, this would seem like a trade EDM would possibly make. And while they might not have a use for no of these players, it's still 4 extra trade assets/4 depth players.</div></div>
Yeah, I agree with your assessment in that you can't make trades with UFA players who are on expiring contracts. So that's a no-go with the Dallas concept. And there is no way the buds sign uncle Leo to that type of contract/term. As for the Edmonton deal, I do admire the balls on this trade but more in favour of Toronto. Thus, if I was Edmonton I would be asking for Jake Gardiner along with Brown and/or Kapanen. Martin would be a pipe dream unless Toronto took back a bad contract (eg. Lucic) and that would suck!

You're right! The Matthews & Marner will be a tight squeeze on the cap and most likely based on my calculations the likes of Brown and another player would need to be traded in order to stay within the cap. It's just too bad that Nathan Horton's contract doesn't come off the books for 2019-20 season to provide some breathing room.

Maple Leafs Roster 2018-19
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>WarrenB</b></div><div>Overall I agree with the RFA/UFA signings, the amounts and the terms. I think Nylander may go for a little more $ and term, or it will be a bridge contract instead. For the trades - I don't think Philly would do that - Simmonds might be getting older, but he is a big part of that team still + giving up a mid-high 1st rounder for Jake Gardiner when you already have a very solid, young D core doesn't make a lot of sense. I'd be interested to see if the Av's would entertain that offer - personally I think they would want something like Nylander straight up. And for the NY trade - they are starting to rebuild, therefore, I'm not sure what the benefit is to bring in Martin as he wouldn't fit with a rebuild mindset.</div></div>
Thanks for your input and I see your point about Nylander, I just don't think think that he should be getting 'Pastrnak' dollars. Nylander was good this season, but not as elite as Pastrnak was. Pehapes, the deal I indicted should be more of 4 years signing as opposed to 5 years worth. When it comes to Marner, I do see him going for the 6M+ range. As for the Gardiner trade, I agree that the buds do have a young D-core and with the likes of Liljegren progressing up the chain, some bodies will need to go and make cap room for Matthews & Marner for 2019-20. The NYR is to provide a better backup goaltender for Lud's and give Sparks another chance. The Martin peice is just a nice hopeful scenrio to get his contract off the Leafs books.
