Opening Night

I agree! It's not the term that the Leafs would want nor the dollars that Marner is gunning for, but it works for both sides in the short term. It will also give Dubas & team more time to extend there d-core which as it stands (minus Rielly) will all need new contracts next year.
Side Question: The Leafs still need to reinforce there goaltending tandem and now that Curtis McElhinney has surprisingly signed with Tampa, would the likes of Louis Domingue be worth going after? His numbers last year were pretty solid, and it may be advantageous for the Leafs to have a little more stability - not to mention wins (I'm looking at you Sparks) to back up Anderson.

Trade Deadline 2019
Whether or not other people on this site like these trade concepts you have to admit having Wayne Simmonds on the first line with Matthews & Nylander would be interesting as he would give those two some added room in the slot to make better plays. Hyman can then go back on the line with Tavares & Marner where he belongs. I would love to see Jake Muzzin on this team.

I respectfully disagree. Sure! Nylander is not playing great right now, but then again neither is St. Louis. So it would be wise to get younger assets via this trade to hit the reset button for next year. And NOT a chance that Sandin should also be included in a deal that already has 4-first round picks (if you include players) going to the Blues.

I like your concepts. Especially the Gardiner for Brassard swap. Just don't know if Pittsburgh would give up a 1st rounder. Ferland would be a fun player to have in the latter part of the season/playoffs.

Leafs Oilers Trade
Ballsy Trades! But I like them. Giving up a first-round draft pick for a team that may not make the playoffs would be a better trade-off than losing our young d-prospects - which will be needed to balance out the Leafs cap hell in the coming seasons. It would be kinda cool to see Lucic in a Leafs uniform squaring off against Boston in the playoffs.

If you want to win a cup, you have to pay up for good players. That's a fair deal to at least consider if you're Dave Polie.

surprise
Aside from the Detriot proposal, I don't mind these trades because they address the Leafs pressing needs right now with being too soft on the backend. I mean for all the talk of Igor Ozhiganov being the young version of Pollak he sure doesn't use his body to lay out opposing players. Case in point he should have destroyed Valtteri Filppula cutting through the d-men in the 4-0 loss last Saturday. That would have made a hard statement to the Islanders and possibly changed the rhythm of the game in the Leafs favour.
Gudas & Lovejoy are not afraid to grind away in their own zone - which is needed against the likes of Boston and they have manageable contracts. A fresh start on a new team that is not dwindling in the standings can always give a player that added edge to play better.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>tkecanuck341</b></div><div>Martinez would probably cost Kapanen and a 2nd. I think LA would consider this trade if they only had to retain $500K - $750K of Martinez contract. That still keeps his cost low for the Leafs at $3.5M per for the next 2-years. I would then put Zaitsev with Rielly as he seems to play better with him than any other d-man on the roster - case in point his first year with the Leafs. The first round draft pick would be a fair trade for Jaret Anderson-Dolan.

Lets say Marner at 10 and Matthews at 12
Good posting! As much as I hate to see Connor Brown move to another team, it makes fiscal sense for the Leafs to move out a larger contract to fit in multiple players with smaller contracts. And ultimately the Leafs may play it safe to wait another year to go after an elite defenceman (if available) until Patrick Marleau's current contract is off the books. I say current because I could see him signing a small term, small-cap hit deal to stay with the Leafs should they get closer to cup contention. Call me bias I like what Marleau does as a player for the team and the game. Also, I love the fact that you are keeping the fourth line intact the way that it currently is. More and more I see that line continue to gel together well so that Bab's can stop tinkering. It's also useful to have two guys on the same line who are natural centre's.

Intriguing! I admire what you are trying to pull off here with the Kadri trade scenario. You are giving Leafs fans an advance look as to what may be in the future mindset with Nylander centring the third line - which opens up much more opportunity for prospect wingers to get slotted into the lineup. The best part about this proposal is that it doesn't see either team(s) trading away futures.

Bro! You are so wrong when it comes to comparing Brown to Simmonds. Ask yourself who's most likely going to be more physical and tenacious come playoffs when the Leafs face Boston or Tampa. Picks and a prospect (which the Leafs have many) are mearly a small price to pay if your team goes deep in the playoffs.

Lol! Zaitsev is experienced and defensively sound? And Lovejoy isn't? What games have you been watching this year? That's right this trade is to save money because two talented players are going to eat up a lot of the cap space next year. Better to make more room now that come Jul 1st.

Not sure about the other trade concepts you listed. But having Wayne Simmonds on a line with Nazem Kadri in the playoffs would be fun to watch - especially if Babcock was to play the matchup game more with other teams. Nothing like having two pests on a line together grinding out other players on the boards and creating mischief in front of the net.
