Van Riemsdyk
I'd take TvR anyday over some of the trade proposals involving the 'Canes other RHDmen (Hamilton{cringe}, Faulk{Ott's Justin Falk is just as good), Pesce {I like him but not at the cost of Kappy and Lily}) for the Leafs. Cheap is the golden word when it comes to the Leafs future of paying 5 guys over half your salary cap.

Leafs 3-Way Deal STL CLB
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>junoandkeisha</b></div><div>Yeah, I know, if Gretzky could get traded, Dubas could go back on his word and trade Nylander. I just think that Dubas isn’t like other GM’s. Maybe I am naive, but his past speaks volumes.</div></div>
I'm sure Dubois thought and said some things publicly at time that he thought were true, but certainly some big changes happened to his club.
1. Signing 11m Tavares. Betcha Dubas didn't think that was going to happen. 2. Nylander...his AAV is about .5m more than he expected to pay. 3. The emergence of Marner as a star, and not 6.5m player but a 9m player. 4. Emergence of Kapanen has a better than average player.
So really it's all about the cap unfortunately. And having too many good players on good contracts, isn't really a problem because one can always be traded for value.
Any issue with Gardiner and Hainsey gone next season do the Leafs have NHL competent cheap replacements or do they have to sign a more experienced (good) Dman.
So, while Dubas may have been genuine at his press conference, the realities might be different next summer. Plus, what else would Dubas say publicly? That the Leafs don't have cap, someone from this group is going to be traded? He's not going to say THAT. So he may have said..."things are OK" just to keep the media and fans from bothering him during the season so the team can just read about hockey only. I expect Nylander or some high priced forward is going to traded next summer, more for cap reasons and to fill a Dman spot at least short term.

Lets say Marner at 10 and Matthews at 12
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LeafedIn</b></div><div>Good posting! As much as I hate to see Connor Brown move to another team, it makes fiscal sense for the Leafs to move out a larger contract to fit in multiple players with smaller contracts. And ultimately the Leafs may play it safe to wait another year to go after an elite defenceman (if available) until Patrick Marleau's current contract is off the books. I say current because I could see him signing a small term, small-cap hit deal to stay with the Leafs should they get closer to cup contention. Call me bias I like what Marleau does as a player for the team and the game. Also, I love the fact that you are keeping the fourth line intact the way that it currently is. More and more I see that line continue to gel together well so that Bab's can stop tinkering. It's also useful to have two guys on the same line who are natural centre's.
#keeptheeliteplayerstogether</div></div>
As soon as Marleau's contract expires, Dermot's ELC ends. So the Leafs might not have enough cap to get this so called elite Dmen. In 2019/20 maybe (and the Leafs hope for cap reasons) it's Reilly, Zaitsev, Dermot, Ozzie, Sandin and Liljgren. that six....Rosen, Borgman, maybe Durzi. that's nine.. Let's just hope the Leafs are playing this June and then we'll worry about the next year :)

Do I agree that Kadri may have to be moved in the future? Most likely yes. For this package? Absolutely not. The fit is there with Carolina for Kadri but there's a good argument that the package coming back isn't nearly enough. Kadri is a 2C on most teams and arguably would be Carolina's 1C beside Aho. That's lethal. & all Toronto has coming back is Faulk and a pick? Faulk is an offensive guy, probably wouldn't even see time on either of Toronto's PP units. Leafs only use 1 dman on each, Rielly on the first isn't changing, and Dermott can easily slide in on the 2nd PP once Gardiner leaves (he's solid at both ends of the ice and is way cheaper than Faulk and if they wanted a right shot on the PP point, Zaitsev is more than capable of playing that role). So Faulk wouldn't have a spot until the PK and he's not the type of guy to be used just for killing penalties. On top of that, Kadri has 3 years left after this one where Faulk only has 1 left and could walk as a UFA cause he'll ask for more money which the Leafs can't give him when they'll have bigger contracts in Marner and Matthews signed plus Dermott next offseason, plus Freddy and Rielly in a couple more. Doesn't make sense for the Leafs to give up the games best 3C in the league for a guy they'll barely use and won't be able to use his most skilled areas a lot.
That being said, as I said Kadri to Carolina is a good fit IMO.. just not for this package and not for Faulk at all really. IMO, if I were the Leafs and Canes, a Kadri for Brett Pesce straight up is fair. Both teams get what they need (Carolina gets top 6 forward, arguably 1C, and Toronto gets a top 4 right handed, defensively minded guy who they can use on the PK). Kadri has 3 years left after this one, Pesce has 5 years left. Kadri has a cap hit of $4.5M per season, Pesce has a cap hit of $4.025M per. Toronto even saves a bit of cap in this idea but Toronto also ends up paying Pesce more in real dollars which saves Carolina more money long term to pay guys like Aho, Svechnikov, Terravainen, and other guys. The argument for the deal being 1-for-1 and not more is the fact that even though Pesce has 2 more years of control on him, Toronto is giving far more offence and Kadri is good in his own end too. And Pesce makes the Leafs an even more well rounded team. Both teams also trade from a strength to address a weakness in their teams. Win-win deal for both teams

Keep Gardiner
Well you get 4 stars for not trading marleau and actually moving the right two contracts it would take to keep gardiner.
Now for the negative... you have Lilly with gardiner.... they both finish the season -136....

Leafs with two trades + Carlson
I will start with the extensions. The contract for Carlson seems bit too big and bit too long, but okay. But 7 year 1M extension for Komarov? He's currently on 2.95M and low-cap contracts usually aren't that long. Given that he's 31, 2-3 year 2.3M is much more realistic in my opinion.
Now to the trades. While I like the idea of adding experience with Spezza and Methot, the trade is just so uneven. The reason is because both JVR and Bozak are unrestricted free agents, so there no such thing as rights to them. Hence the trade is heavily leaning toronto's way.
The other trade is skewed Edmonton's way soooo much. 4 players and 2 extra draft picks for moving from no. 25 to no. 10? Even without the players, this would seem like a trade EDM would possibly make. And while they might not have a use for no of these players, it's still 4 extra trade assets/4 depth players.
