I think that expecting Laine to get better is a forlorn hope. In this game of "Musical Chairs," I think that the music is about to stop.

Moving Krug

If it was up to me, I think I'd do it. The Rakell/Graves contracts are both front loaded which should make it easier to move them when they have just a couple of years term left.

It might be. Just in my opinion, if that's the case, I'd rather keep Jarry - unless the other parts of the package are really good. You could keep Jarry/Ned for basically the same cap hit as you have here(assuming Ned commands that much/they want to pay him that much) - or play Jarry/Blom for a cheaper cap hit. And I think both of those options are better than Ned/Husso considering the Jarry return and cap hits. Just my perspective on it. Goalies are always a gamble though so who knows

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Marcsnack</b></div><div>I get that that Monahan contract is not ideal, you make a fair point.
The Murashov thing is also valid. I see them kinda splitting the net in the A if need be, but I guess if we wanna commit to Blom at the NHL level, then we can opt to move Jarry or let Ned walk.</div></div>
I don't think they will split down there.
I think if you look at this year it gives you the road map to next year.
The had Hellberg down there are a mentor to Blom. But Blom got the majority of the starts because they want him to play not sit.
As in playing makes you better.
I think next year is the same issue. Which in some ways makes a 1 year vet goalie coming back make sense. As long as it's cap friendly, but more likely they will find that in FA.
They won't park two young goalies down there to split time. A. it leads to a sort of bad competition and has been something they have avoided repeatedly (usually by trading the young goalie out think Clang), and B. there is no real player reference for help. It's just not best for a young goalies development to only have another young goalie there. Hard to float two and a vet in 72 game seasons.
I think Ned walks this offseason. Pens won't be able to carry that cap hit as he's earned a decent pay day from someone. No harm no foul.
Blom moves up to take his place. Has a mentor in Jarry, and gets the backup starts say 30 or so unless he outplays him than more.
They most likely get a mentor goalie in FA or trade return, from another team as part of cap transfer. They are sent to wbs to help mentor Murashov who I think they would like to play like they did Blom this year, getting 40 some starts.
It's if they both play well, that the issues start. Because soon you are asking why do we need Jarry and can we move him.

I highly doubt it. Management likes him and Geekie needs to get acclimated into the NHL. Only reason they would consider it is if they won the lottery and got Celebrini

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Marcsnack</b></div><div>Hard to move Jarry without taking a goalie back. Obviously, I would like to run Blomqvist, but wouldnt mind one more year.</div></div>
The problem with this is they are trying to bring in the russian, and there isn't room down there for both. I'm pretty sure the plan is to move Bloom up if he comes over.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Marcsnack</b></div><div>I could defo see that. Just dont see that many 3C options that are available, barring Monahan, Stephenson & Domi. I dont know if the Pens trust Poulin to run that 3C spot. Yager probably needs a year in the AHL, but hey, I wouldnt be against them being on the team if they are ready.</div></div>
why do you think they need to add a 3C?
You have both Eller and Acciari still on contract, and you didn't trade either here. Don't get me wrong, I don't think either is great at 3C, but either one is capable of playing it in a bridge year if you are unwilling to play Poulin, Yager or Ponomarev there. Either way the last thing they need is a guy signed to a 5 year deal there. It just doesn't match up.
I honestly think if this team could pull it's head out it's backside and give it's youth a real chance next year could be interesting.
You got Yager who might be able to fill a top 6 role, Koivunen who might be able to do the same or middle 6. You got Poulin who could play 3C.
While I'm sure there will be some growing pains, I'd rather have those and let them grow and hope the legs make up for it. They could use the cap to shore up other areas like 3rd pair on short term deals.
I don't think outside of a few of these prospects taking off there is anything they can do to become a legit contender. There simply isn't enough depth there and not enough cap space to totally rebuild the team without moving a lot of bodies out. That isn't really feasible. They will be lucky to move one of either Smith, Eller and Acciari out. I wouldn't expect more than that if any.
What I do know is it's unreasonable to expect the type of super human effort out of Crosby to carry the team on his back at 37 for 82 games. They can't bring in enough from the outside in limited cap space.
If they are going to spend big they should focus on someone like Reinhart. As they will need a real difference maker to put in the top 6. As they have no chance with the 2nd line performing like it did this year.

Goaltending isn't completely our issue. I don't think Jarry would be much better on this Detroit team. We really need to upgrade our team defense. Also we need to shed salary to help do so and adding 625K won't help. Rather use that cap, and assets if needed, to upgrade the team infront of the goalie.

Monahan has all the look and feel of a trap contract and I really wouldn't want to be tied up in that for 5 years on a guy who's gonna be 30 next season.
Not to mention 5 years is a very problematic situation. You got Yager who will need some time at Center. This team is constantly holding it's youth back. It has to end.
Poulin did a half way decent job at center. Yet this team is constantly pushing him down and not giving him a chance. And for what? So Puustinen who is a RL player to get time?
I mean really these types of decisions need to go.
Play the kid and give him his chance. It's time already.
They don't need to bring in these 30 year old guys blocking the way anymore. By all reports Yager should be able to compete for a spot next year. You got Poulin so that's 2 roles filled.

I'd be fine with a Monahan signing - as well as the Smith trade. Not the biggest fan of the whole goalie scenario though. It seems a bit steep for Ned - and if we're paying him starter money I'd probably try Blomqvist as the backup to spend money elsewhere. And while I'm not opposed to trading Jarry I'm not the biggest fan of the return - mainly in bringing back Husso. Although I understand the thought process with him only having one year left - and that DET would probably want that cap going back. You've got some extra cap space as well that I'd try to utilize.
EDIT: My bad - forgot to read the description about the last dman and realize there was a hole there haha. Yikes. Ignore my cap comment

If the pens are taking on a 6 year cap dump I think they want more than a 4th round pick.
KK is overpaid by about 2 mil and still hasn't shown anything beyond being a bottom 6er in nearly 400 nhl games. At this point he is what he is.
Maybe if the canes want to retain 1 or 2 mil I could see the pens taking him on.

It’s not the most obvious move for the Sabres to make….
But we’ve only seen UPL have 1 good year & this would solidify the goaltending
It also allows Levi time to develop at a slower pace & not rush him
Idk that I’m all for it, but i wouldn’t hate it either

I’d be happy if they just got out of his contract clean, no retention. So were it me, I’d dump him for future considerations and slot Drury in as the 3C/J Staal eventual replacement.
However, I’m not sure the Canes would dump him so soon. He is still young enough and has shown some promise as a decent player. (You’d also have to find a team that still believed in him and was willing to take on that deal. I think he’s young enough still where that isnt yet impossible) However, their cap situation and the players with expiring deals coming this summer likely means that they need to be rid of either Kotkaniemi or Kuznetsov to re-sign/replace enough players to stay at the level they have been at. Clearing Kotkaniemi’s $4.8M makes that much easier.

bottom teams like Chicago, Arizona or San Jose can take him for future consideration cause they will have about 40 million of space. Especially Arizona with Voracek's and Little's contracts ending. Any other teams with space will take him only if we pay picks.

I've got the Pens somewhere between 10 and 15. I admit, the package is not enough for a top ten pick, but I do not think that is what the Pens pick will be.
