What GM says and what they think are completely different things.
Let's be realistic. Minny will not win with 14M dead cap. But credit to them, they are not going full rebuild. They want to accumulate some asset while staying competitive and develop their young players in a winning environment.
My proposed trade allows you to do that. Take the TOP 5 pick and gus and run with It. You will be happy in 5 years.

You are wrong about Fleury not coming back. Guerin himself said everything goes good, plan is to resign him to 1 year deal. They were teammates and he waived to come to Minnesota 2x, Including before he was dealt to Chicago. So in terms of your statement, you are clearly wrong
No, Tyson Jost wasn't brought in as a test really. He was brought in as nico sturm replacement.</div></div>
Easy, if they decide to sign Fleury AND keep Jost, than they have no room for Fiala.... or the player they acquire with him. Mark my words, there will be money coming in from the Fiala trade. If not it lowers the number of teams that can trade for him and lowers his value. I think brown is as good of a player as they can get for Him and the team will remain competitive while still building the future.... I mean surely Guerin isn't thinking about winning the stanley cup with 14M Dead cap...

Minny is not looking to operate under the cap... they still want to maximize their cap space. They will surely want a player back from Fiala. Brown is an excellent alternative to Fiala + This trade allows them to add a player at the other two position, save a little bit of $$ AND get a top 5 pick.
Brown is one of the most underrated players in the league. Complete game. Plays 20 min / night.
Zaitsev is the bottom pairing prototype they normally look for. He'll be able to eat 20 min a night and let Addison step into an offensive role when/if Dumba leaves.
Gus is a nearly ready prospect. He allows Minny to ease Wallsted into the NHL and gives him a Swedish Pal as a Duo moving forwards.

Fiala Trade - Who says no
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Carson</b></div><div>No, Dumba is a top 2-3d, better than Zaitsev. Minnesota also has 8 d under contract, so they simply aren't taking on the cap dump of Zaitsev.
Marc Andre Fleury is coming back next year. Very likely will keep Talbot or sign a cheaper backup
Fiala was always going to cost a 1st round pick. Tyson Jost was trades for with the intention to keep him beyond this year</div></div>
I am not arguing that Zaitsev is as good as Dumba. Zaitsev is a bottom pairing guy. At 4.5M he has one of the worst contract in the league, but at 2.5M its OK.
What I mean is that Addison is not suited to be a bottom pairing guy with a lot of D-Zone starts. Zaitsev can easily step into that role. Addison will replace Dumba in 2 years as the 3 guy.
Don't kid yourself, Fleury is not coming back. Unless they go on a unexpected run in the playoffs.
Jost was brought in for a TEST and the OPTION of bringing him back next year.
Basically for 6-7M what would you prefer:
1. Fiala
2. Fleury + Jost
3. Brown + Zaitsez + Gus + TOP 5 pick

Fiala Trade - Who says no
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TheBoyDuddus</b></div><div>It’s funny because I see it the exact opposite.
Ottawa’s giving up a top 5 pick unprotected. Arguably their best goalie prospect (definitely their closest to the NHL). Brown, who’s been scoring at a 60 point pace all season and is only signed for 3.6m next year, realistically worth a 1st all by himself. And then Zaitsev is serviceable but Ottawa is stuck retaining 2m for the next 2 years.
Don’t really care for Jost but we can say him and Zaitsev are a wash and if Brown and the Minny 1st cancel out, Ottawa isn’t trading their 1st for Fiala 1 for 1 but they’re still adding Gus on top of that somehow.
That’s a pass.</div></div>
2. Retaining 2M on Zaitsez is a better outcome than a buyout.
Here is the logic for Ottawa.
1. Fiala is a better complement for Stutzle's game than Brown and he is younger. Hence, normally, an extra asset.
2. Retaining 2M on Zaitsev is a better outcome than a Buyout.
3. They don't have much Leverage with Gus because they have 3 goalies on a 1-way next year. Murray will be tough to move. Gus will be able to be had at a reasonable price this summer. Defintely not worth more than a 2nd round pick at best. (think of nedelkovic)
4. Jost is a weird player, but I love his TK vs GW ratio. Some would say it means he doesn't have the puck often.. but still would rather have him than Zaitsev.

Zaitsev is a third pairing guy with a decent cap hit which Minnesota doesn't need.
Brown is on an expiring contract to a team with no cap space, plus trading away a centerman Jost
Swap first round picks is close to a wash
And a goalie prospect with limited nhl production to a team that has Wallstedt</div></div>
1. The main value is in the first round pick that will be TOP 5 vs 16-24 range.
2. Brown is one of the most underrated players in the league. Complete game. Plays in all situation. 20 min/game. Has a RH shot (which Minny lacks) . Has a super reasonable contract. He is worth a late 1st as a rental. Also in a year, Dumba, Kulikov and Talbot are off the hook. Possibility to extand him long term to a more reasonable cap hit than Fiala's.
3. Gus allows minny to ease Wallstedt along in the AHL next year and step in the following year when Talbot is off the hook.
4. The addition of Zaitsev on the right side makes Dumba expandable. He'll be able to eat enough tough minutes to ease Addison into the lineup.

Branny hasn't fallen off a cliff, he jsut hasn't progress as fast as the unfair expectations that were put on him following the stone trade. He will defintely be a great 2nd pairing d-men, eventually. Sens just seems to have no room for him.
Also, with those wierd buyouts, MIN probably doesn't have room to re-sign Greenway next year especially considering all their other options at LW.

Meh, It is when you consider Ott traded stone for brannstrom. But a side from that, Greenway is the prototypical player sens want to build around. In todays NHL a good third liner is pretty much as important as a good first liner. Look at how tampa one their 2 cups. Greenway proved this year that he can be an elite middle 6 forward with his tough-to-find package of size, power, puck protection, agility and instincts.

I have a simple question to ask: Do you prefer White or Giroux for the next 4 years? As they will make give or take the same money. For me the answer is a no brainer. Not even thinking twice. Especially, since Ottawa plan is to enter a competitive window in the next few years.
White has shown... frankly... nothing. Giroux still has unbelievable underlying numbers. Is a top 5 faceoff guy in the league. Has amazing intangibles. He is like an on-ice coach.
He is getting old. But his game is translating so well. Because he is smart. Like Patrice Bergeron (who is older and as good as ever). I expect him to maintain a great level of hockey and be a massive upgrade over white. So much so that i am willing to part ways with a 2nd and Greig.

Laine has been bad this year yes.. but he is still much more proven than caufield, has a much more interesting 6'5'' frame and fits in the win now timeline a little bit better.
It's the time to buy low. A few years ago, there is no way we could get him for Drouin + a prospect + capdump.

Any alternatives to Boone that you’d ask for? He’s got strong ties to the team, and I’m hard pressed to think they’d trade him as part of this package.</div></div>
The only other option I see is Nyquist at 50% retained. But even then, not sure MB is interested in taking him. The purpose of dumping Byron and taking Jenner is to create space in a year when it is time to re-sign Suzuki.
For the habs, Jenner is Essentially a one-year rental. He can re-sign with Columbus in a year if the ties are that strong.

Let's say they get their ass kicked firt round, it might make sense to look at trading one of of their top 4D, otherwise they will lose Dunn in expansion for nothing. With many UFA's, they are looking at a mini rebuild of their forwards around Kyrou and Thomas, anyway. Getting a top 8 pick, an early second, 3 B+ prospect, and a servicable RD as a stop gap for losing Parayko is a decent return for now and the future.
I agree it's no sure thing. But they may consider it. I think they strongly consider if Ott wins the lottery.

What does Ott pay to make these upgrades:

I am trying to figure out a package for Giroux. I figured, as a pending UFA, White + Greig is a fair offer. Perhaps I am missing a a 2nd. Zaitsev vs Ghost is a slight win for Philly. Zub and Myers is a wash. Perhaps a slight win for Ottawa but Zub will also sign a team friendly contract that should be longer term. In 2 years, myers will ask for at least 4M.
Ottawa gives up their 1st to acquire Foote and Killorn but get's a 1st back for a retained Killorn. Ottawa won,t be a contender but they won't be as bad next year. Basically they get Foote by accepting to move back a few positions in the draft. Sounds like a good deal for me. Very realistic.
