Keith - Ceci
Russell - Barrie
Broberg - Bouchard

The reputation Keith undeservingly has with this club (and the entire sport in general tbh) will see him step up for some intangible excuse. Something along the lines of "he's a leader", "has played 40min per night", "cup-winning mentality" or some other hokey load of crap that the Oilers beat reporters love to lull themselves to sleep with.

Maybe Bouchard takes the #1RD slot - he should - but I don't think Ceci's done much of anything to warrant Barrie playing ahead of him and Broberg (per Tippett) can't play anything more than bottom pair because he's a rookie. Nevermind that Broberg loves to activate and him playing with Barrie would be a genuinely unmitigated disaster. Supposedly, kids can't be trusted when things get dire, so they'll probably play the "top pair of the future" as the bottom pair with limited minutes while the other two pairings get smoked all night.

Optimizing these pairings over the short-term until Nurse returns or Holland makes a trade probably sees Keith and Russell benched and both Niemelainen and Samorukov recalled to be honest. Total pipe dream though as playing your better players over grizzled veterans is taboo in professional sports.

Broberg - Bouchard

I totally agree, Keith has been a nightmare the last couple of games but maybe some motivation against his former club will motivate him. The odd shift that Bouch and him play together they have looked
half effective so that could be an option(?) Ceci and Broberg could be a good look as well.

As for having essentially 4 rookies and one winger as your Defense would be a tough sell, I think having the experience on the blue line to understand all the nuances of the game does help younger players. But yes i agree Skill > Experience
