<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jonesryan</b></div><div>... I said NEXT off-season the Leafs will have minimum $15M in cap space, so that's after this season when they already sign Marner and Kapanen and everyone else. Brown is probably already gone, so there's another $2.1M added to next season's cap space, and Kadri could very well be moved as it is. Toronto has Muzzin's replacement in Dermott. So that's not an issue. Muzzin off the books ($4M), Marleau off ($6.25M) and Brown off ($2.1M).. that's $12.25M before the cap even rises again. That's just in guarantees cap space from losing guys. All that cap room and their only significant guy to re-sign that summer is Dermott. My point isn't that just cause the Leafs have the money they can be the "mob boss of the NHL", it's that because they have the cap space and actual money, they can choose to push you around if you try to do the same to them by overpaying one of their RFA's. There's a reason why teams don't offersheet players, it gives GM's a bad reputation. &amp; overpaying the RFA's gives the GM's an even worse reputation.. it won't happen.</div></div>

You do know that when you subtract a player such as Brown (and his 2.1 million cap hit), you have to replace that player in the lineup, and that replacement player doesn't come with a salary of 0. Just because you are subtracting Muzzin's 4 million off the books doesn't mean "it frees up 4 million". If Durmott truly is Muzzin's replacement, he will likely be paid accordingly, as his contract expires the same time Muzzin's does. So assuming Dermott get's 3 million per season, thats only freeing up 1 million, and you also have to have a player to replace Dermott - who will cost around 1 million. Therefore, not freeing up much, if anything at all.

Not to mention, there is zero zero zero zero zero chance that Toronto would successfuly sign Hischier to an offer sheet. No matter what the Devils do to try to mess up Toronto's cap situation.
