to say money has no bearing on performance is just nonsense. It's why guys are labeled cap dumps. No one wants to pay their bust players.</div></div>
Money does not have any bearing on on-ice performance. Getting paid 5 million does not magically make you better than you are at 800k. that is simple. Ovi lead an offensively inept team in goals and was 2nd in points. Asking any 38 year old, being paid 15 mil or 15 cents to be a 100 point guy is absurd, and that was the expectations placed upon him. Not that hard to comprehend.

Oshie is potentially done in the NHL given a lot of the health issues he's spoken about going through, so he probably doesn't end up in a deal like this. He also has a M-NTC and I don't believe Washington will trade him as a service to him and his family since they don't wish to leave Washington. Taking him out though, this is certainly an interesting deal, but I think the Caps would end up being outbid as they won't be willing to part with Leonard, Cristall, or Miroshnichenko and Winnipeg could probably receiver better offers from elsewhere.

You mean how he lead the team in goals and was 2nd in points? MacLellan is clear that expecting 38 year old Ovi to single-handedly make the offense tick isn’t fair, and he’s absolutely right. Every player has to have a supporting cast, you don’t see the expectation from, say Tage Thompson in Buffalo to carry the entire offense. Using money as an argument is just foolish, since it’s not like the Caps are lacking it and it has no bearing on on-ice performance.

Ehlers bidding war
I imagine the Caps are out simply because whatever they offer will be outbid. The Caps likely won't part with Leonard, Cristall, or Miroshnichenko for Ehlers and I'd assume 17th overall isn't going to cut it for Winnipeg, so the Caps are pretty much out.

Not a big fan of moving the 1st for Chyc since Carbery doesn't play defenders on their off side and Washington already has Fehervary and Sandin to give top 4 minutes to. Just doesn't seem like a need right now. Also I imagine Anaheim matches, Leason's been a decent depth guy there and the Ducks have plenty of cap space.

Washington doesn't really have a need for Kampf, and given MacLellan parted with a 1st just a couple years ago to get rid of Panik, I don't see any scenario where they trade assets for Kampf.

Realistic Rebuild 2
Nashville already has quite a few NHL defensemen, I don't really see them as having interest in Bear. Duclair is an interesting free agent but I'd be a little weary of giving him that term. Not sure he's the right target for a team like the Caps.

I have doubts that Stephenson will prosper outside of Vegas, especially without an Eichel to boost his production. Think McMichael probably gets less too, given how Protas cooled off for a month after his extension.

Reading "<em>[That] he's expected to carry us offensively at 38 is probably not fair</em>" as no expectations is just willful ignorance lmao. I know you hate Ovi but going into every Caps ACGM to say things that just blatantly aren't true is just sad. Cheer up though, I hear Jeff Carter's gone this year!

Not sure I see the reasoning in Utah taking JGP. They've got a decent crop of young centers and Bjugstad would likely fill the same role they'd have Pageau in.

Don't get me wrong, I get it. But you asked for 9.5 mil and you got it.... stop complaining when you get the expectations of 9.5 mil too!
Maybe if the selfish one took a pay cut in his older years he'd have helped the team actually have that help. But it was all about him.
Which is why I'm not cutting him a break on it. You didn't see Malkin or Letang ask for 9.5 million.
But it's all about him, his record, and his salary.
So nah, he gets no break.</div></div>
Did you see Ovi complaining? didn't think so! Dude took the entire responsibility of failing offense while leading the team in goals, though it was clear as day most of the rest of the team was either not up to task like Patches or injured like Oshie. If we want to compare the two teams, Crosby was Guentzel at a point per game before being traded, Malkin at 67 points, Letang and Karlsson both over 50 points as defensemen. Washington had a 50 point defenseman in Carlson and Dylan Strome. Ovi's second half changed pretty much willed the capitals into a playoff spot, and you don't see him complaining about "expectations", so frankly I'm not quite sure what MacLellan's quote has you all bent out of shape about...

Billy G Looking to Make a Deal
Imo, Yurov would likely be more successful as a winger than a center, but if Rossi's on the block I think the Capitals have to be interested. 1st round pick and every prospect not named Leonard (or maybe Cristall? tough sell but I would lean towards available) would be on the table from Washington.

Not a huge fan of this. I think the Caps likely keep Dowd since they didn't sell high on him at the deadline, and you could get more for Van Riemsdyk than a couple low picks and a depth defenseman. Elvis-Kuemper swap is interesting but I feel there may still be some beef there, if they can't swing a deal Kuemper can play veteran to Stevenson for the next year.
For Free agents, I don't really see Debrusk or Patches as targets. Patches was fine on a 1 year deal but Milano is more useful in that 3LW role and the Caps have Miroshnichenko who could also potentially slot in at 3LW. Debrusk I don't truly see as a 1st line guy, pretty good playoff performer but his regular season stats make me feel he'll likely be just about what McMichael is, which isn't worthy of 1st line time at this point.
Don't think Carolina would part with KK either, regardless of league view on his contract as a negative or positive, I think Waddell's made his bed and now intends to lay in it regarding KK.

These trades are bad for every team not named WSH.
“There's a lot of pressure on him,” Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan said. “[That] he's expected to carry us offensively at 38 is probably not fair.”
the excuses.... he gets paid 9.5 million but don't have expectations. what a joke.</div></div>
There is no other 38+ year old in this league with the expectations (to carry the offense) like Washington has lol. It is, in fact, the definition of expectations. I get you're a premium Ovechkin hater being a Pens fan and all but please think about that for a second, asking one player for any team save for Connor McDavid or maybe Auston Matthews to carry a team offensively is unrealistic.

Is there any rhyme or reason to this? For instance: Why would Ovi have Buffalo on his NTC? There's not much to say in terms of animosity between him and any players in Buffalo, same with Carlson and Oshie.

Caps decline here. Neither Jarnkrok nor a 3rd is very appealing to the Caps and Dowd was getting higher offers during the deadline that the Caps passed on, so he's worth more to DC to keep than to deal here.

Fehervary and to a lesser extent Sandin are fine complimentary top-4 guys but I really think they need a true Orlov replacement. Ideally would be an RD but get the BPA and work around the handedness later</div></div>
Pesce comes to mind for me here. Feels like the type of player that could bring some defensive stability to Sandin and allow him to be a little more aggressive in the offensive zone.

24-25 Leafs Look Ahead III
Steeves is a 24 year old who's only played 7 NHL games in his career and will be waiver eligible next year. Washington could just as easily call up Alex Limoges or an equivalent player if they wanted to acquire an AHLer instead of paying a 3rd rounder, and Steeves wouldn't have an NHL spot even as a scratch behind Miroshichenko and Sgarbossa who have already proven themselves at the NHL level. The Caps would pass here and find a different young-ish AHLer to sign in free agency.

Sandin was a year younger than Liljegren is now, had an extra year of term, and was more highly regarded around the league. Liljegren immediately needing a new contract buffers some of his value.
