Finally some luck
Edmonton declines. If they trade Campbell it's for cap space, not to take on a worse contract.
They could keep Campbell ($3.8M) and re-sign Pickard ($1M) for less money than Merzlikins, and they would have better goaltending and a 3rd round pick.

Nightmare in Edmonton
As an Oilers fan, I'm glad not to see Roy on the backend. Guy's a beast!
Serious question, why do the Kings continue to play 1-3-1? I feel like its better suited for teams that doesn't have star power or can't produce high speed/attack offense. With Byfield, Kempe, Fiala and just speedier players like Moore and Laferriere, I think the Kings can move away from 1-3-1 and play a more high-tempo game.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>PurpleHippo</b></div><div>Again, in a year he was injured, you are trying to use stats for a player in a year which he was injured...
To again circle your point against you search him the year before with Torts, his TOI increased from 17:29 a/toi to 20:28a/toi throughout the season.
Stop using points that work DIRECTLY AGAINST your argument :tearsofjoy
But you're right, Torts does know more than us so I will agree that Torts is right in giving more responsibility to Risto.</div></div>
If you want to go back to 22-23, at least give meaningful data.
5v5 TOI
Flyers first 15 games: 15:18 (rank: 4th)
Flyers last 15 games: 15:15 (5th)
PP TOI
Flyers first 15 games: 0:06 (rank: 5th)
Flyers last 15 games: 1:57 (3rd)
PK TOI
Flyers first 15 games: 0:59 (rank: 5th)
Flyers last 15 games: 2.08 (2nd)
The last 15 games, Braun was injured so Ristolainen got a push on PK. However his PK performance was horrific so Torts didn't put him back on the PK unit at all this year.
I'm seeing no evidence that Torts trusted him more towards the end of the year than the beginning. In fact the opposite is true: his 5v5 defensive zone starts per sixty went from 13.72 at the beginning of the season to just 8.71 at the end. His QoC went from 36% TOI v Elites to just 19%.
But keep on keeping on with your narrative. I'm sure you seen him good.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>PurpleHippo</b></div><div>I could swap the year for the draft but I assume 2026 is no better for the Flyers as its 3 out, Tullio is like a 13th guy so I don't disagree there. I just don't think a team would move a 1st for Risto at this point.
Also remember you're getting Desh (who in this situation I make the assumption signs with you) to fill in that gap until Bonk comes up (I assume he's 2 years out?).
Idk, it depends on Phili's direction going forward, if they're making another push next year than I assume they just keep Risto given their cap space; but, if they're gunna go into a 2-3 year re-tool (get stuff ready for Mich) than a trade like this for this worth becomes more realistic.</div></div>
I'd just assume in this case they would want some better prospect, -26 2nd ain't helping that much either.
And I also think with 3-3,5M cap hit Canucks or Leafs (both were rumoured to be interested before his injury) could maybe be paying the late 1st, both are in need of steady RHD. Oilers doesn't really have the suitable assets, except -25 1st. Unless they would be moving Holloway (wouldn't be smart for them), or Akey could be one that interests Flyers, but doubt Oilers are parting ways with him either.

Improvements Under the Cap
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>PurpleHippo</b></div><div>For DiMarco my point more so being that there may be a slight bias in his opinion.
Take a guy like Hayes you traded last year half retained for a 6th, I expect that to be a lot closer to what we can expect this deal to be (getting a little to free cap and room for prospects).
I think 2nd + prospect is his range at 3-3.5M, it's even a pretty decent return for him.</div></div>
Hayes case is totally different story. They wanted to get rid of Hayes, Provorov, DeAngelo for example because they wanted to change the team culture. And some could say it worked pretty well this season. Risto ain't problem for Flyers nor is his contract, even though he's somewhat overpriced as mentioned earlier.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>PurpleHippo</b></div><div>
Assumed this is part of Friedman's quote:
Assumed the cost would mean a 2nd-3rd range, most team's aren't gambling their firsts for a multi-year deal and would rather buy a high-end rental at that price.</div></div>
That was the Friedman part yes. And one could think it's a good bet to get a guy for 3*3M (what you have proposed), who actually had really good advanced stats this season despite being injured couple times. And played in a non playoff team. But i also understand the concern, how much of this is because Torts' system and how much is because of his gameplay. If you are gonna get that high-end rental every year, it's gonna cost a lot.
But as mentioned, right now he's good player for Flyers (wouldn't have believed this 2 years ago) and his contract ain't a problem. They are not gonna retain for 3 years for low return, if they retain, they will want something better than (presumably) late 2nd in kinda weak draft and "prospect" who's most likely never gonna hit the show. Or I could just be wrong and get disappointed with meh return.

Ducks reject on so many levels that they might just not even pick up. plus no reason for the trade, we can buyout Campbell so we don't have to spend the farm and all our draft picks dumping him.
Gibson has just plain not been good these last few years, weather that's because of the ducks in a rebuild or if he is just regressing I don't know, all I know is that we don't want him, we have Skinner
frankly the signings are okay, personally not a fan of Cousins and want nothing to do with him and his play
and that Nurse buyout is sure something

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>PurpleHippo</b></div><div>I think a different prospect could be negotiated but a 1st would need to include something else back as well.
DiMarco is from what I gathered primarily a Flyers writer, I don't know if using him would be the best to judge value on a trade or trade expectation.
However, I agree that the talks would start with a 1st, but eventually fall to a 2nd and mid-prospect.
Risto is a good target cause with the retention he becomes pretty cost effective but any team taking him is taking on the fairly large risk of if he plays a simple shutdown and puck movement game (where he shines) or if he tries to over-exert (where he would likely get benched/boxed).
Throwing a 1st at that and getting a guy for 3 years, even with retention, could be a blunder.</div></div>
Yes he's indeed Flyers writer, but usually knows Flyers stuff pretty well. And that's why there is also Elliotte Friedman quote to back it up.
Late 1st/2nd + decent prospect shouldn't be bad price as cap is going up if you get him for 3 years with 3M aav. But indeed he should be played as ~20min stay-at-home D + PK. That's where he's improved A LOT with Shaw and Torts. If you try to make him a 2-way puck playing D, he might be just a ticking time bomb.

Absolutely - remove Vladar and fax it through.
Cgy can bury Vladar with just a $1M cap penalty, and they have $11M in cap space. No need to take him back.
Edmonton should re-sign Pickard, he's better and will he cheaper than Vladar. He and Rodrigue can cover the backup spot.

Yeah could be something like that also, just the general consensus in this site has been that Oilers should get rid of Ceci for 3rd or smth. So thought you're replacing Ceci with him.<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CD282</b></div><div>Torts plays Ristolainen as a 3rd pairing defenseman, that's not worth a 1st even at $2.55M.
There are several clues as to how much Torts trusts Ristolainen.
5v5 TOI, 22-23: #5 among Flyers defensemen
5v5 TOI, 23-24: #6 among Flyers defensemen
On the fly starts/60, 22-23: #5 among Flyers defensemen
On the fly starts/60, 23-24: #6 among Flyers defensemen
TOI% v Elites, 22-23: #4 among Flyers defensemen
TOI% v Elites, 23-24: #6 among Flyers defensemen
He's a 3rd pairing guy, according to Tortorella.
But hey, there's a sucker born every day... I just don't want it to be Edmonton. Trading a legit 2nd pairing guy for an overpriced 3rd pairing guy is a Chiarelli move, and he got fired years ago.</div></div>
He's been battling with injuries this season, started the season late november and it ended already in mid february, never really been full healthy this season. And it's true that Torts said something like Risto was very bad when he started there, but last year he also stated how he's the most improved player who was getting more TOI the longer season went. That first part of the season is dragging his avg TOI down.
But yeah, Risto at 2,55M is easily worth the 1st for the Flyers. Dunno if they just want to retain 50%, rumors were 25%-35% what they were ready to retain.
And yes Risto has bad reputation, which also affects your opinion about him, but everyone who's actually seen him play under Torts can see the difference.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>PurpleHippo</b></div><div>That ask is a little high but I would potentially be willing to give up a first for him from EDMs perspective.
It's difficult to judge his worth cause he hasn't fit in well in Phili's system (at least statistically), I dont watch Phili so I wouldn't be able to tell why.
I still think he has value, he was pretty good in Buffalo when he was younger and I think matured his game in the right direction.
Would your side be willing to take cap back, namely Kulak/Ceci?</div></div>
He had by far the best defensive season of his career just last year. He's not putting up 40 points but I would argue he's fit Tort's system quite well, maybe even saved his career.
If Philly's willing to retain on him that's probably the only realistic target from your list there. Everyone else is either not available with retention, not available at all, or way out of your price range

Bouchard for sure has more value than Karlsson, not only his value as a player but age and cap hit make him much, much more valuable.
Ekholm is the better 2-way player, which is critical for the Oilers roster. Since arriving in Edmonton Ekholm has a league-leading +60 goal differential at 5v5. I wouldn't trade him for Karlsson 1-for-1 either.
