Why do the Sharks suck?
Go back to the source: The Karlsson trade and subsequent contract extension. Everything else you listed is merely a aftershock.

I agree with everything that you said. They've suffered a lot of injuries, but that's what happens to old teams. I do think they'll bounce back into the playoff hunt if they can address their goaltending situation, however. But, they're probably destined for a Minnesota Wild-type rebuild over the next 3-4 seasons. I don't see a path forward to Cup contention with this roster.

John Tavares Sweepstakes
From the sounds of it, it looks like it has all come down to
:sharks
:mapleleafs
:islanders
The way i see it:
Islanders will get him if his loyalty is his #1 priority
Leafs will get him if he is looking to play with the best player and is looking for a win now mode while also looking for a long term success
San Jose gets him if he is looking to get away from the media while still being competitive. Kind of an inbetween the other two teams with both media, pay and linemates

Flyers fire Ron Hextall
from what I understand, Holmgren wanted Hextall to be more active with trades. Typical Flyers MO. trade all the picks and prospects away for washed up vets who don't do squat in the playoffs and don't re-sign in July.

I think Hextall has done a great job assembling talent while preserving prospects and draft picks. They need better goaltending until Carter Hart is ready to make the jump to the NHL. That being said, I'm very surprised that he was fired while guys like Chiarelli and Ken Holland remain in charge of their respective teams.

Who's Really to Blame in Edmonton???
McKellan's firing further demonstrates a point that I've been stressing forever: GM's sacrifice their head coaches in an attempt to save their own jobs. Chiarelli has built a terrible team around the world's greatest player. His team has no identity, no goaltending, and no depth. Is McKellan really to blame for this? I find it very dubious that Chiarelli should be allowed to keep his job when he's the architect of all that is wrong in EDM. EDM has the incredible fortune of having the league's best player in McDavid as their starting point.
The Oilers also have Draisaitl, a star in his own right. I feel like any causal hockey fan could've built a playoff team w/ the aforementioned foundation. If the Oilers are to salvage anything from the incredible talent they've been blessed with the ownership needs to step up and hold Chiarelli accountable for his myriad mistakes. Otherwise they'll squander the best years of greatest player of his generation. And that's a sin that must be prevented at any cost...before it's too late.

Chiarelli actually said today that he thinks EDM is currently good enough to contend for the Cup. It's a tough question b/c if he says "No, we're not good enough right now" and he built the team, then he's really just ripping himself. What a mess all around.

So I expect the Hawks to rebuild and a new 2018-19 Blackhawks team ready to finish near the bottom of the league and NOT contend once again for the Cup.

Contend for the Cup? They just missed the playoffs by a long shot, got swept the year before and didn’t make it out of the first round the year before that. They have massive holes on defense and in the forward group. Not sure where they’re going to find they defensemen they need as well as the secondary scoring

Which team is farthest from Cup contention?
Which team has the longest path to be a legitimate Cup contender?
I think it's either Detroit or Los Angeles. Both teams have some bad and unmovable contracts, as well as farm systems lacking high end talent. Both teams are going to have to go through long, hard rebuild to get back into contention.
