Could see something like this happening on the draft floor if Bowen Byram is still available when Buffalo's turn comes up later in the top 10. Habs might jump at that possibility to move up 5-7 spots in the draft.
Not sure that Andrew Shaw would be the key target for Buffalo to make up the difference in value but it's not unreasonable. Shaw is a very effective player and role model IF he can stay healthy.

Agreed that unfortunately Gardiner will have to be badly overpaid to come to Montreal. He's been a whipping boy in the Toronto microscope for a long time, even when it was not deserved. Going UFA will be his chance to cash in, and go to a market with lower taxes, better weather, a strong team, and less media attention so he can actually enjoy the next 6-7 years. I have a feeling Montreal fills none of those boxes (more taxes, more snow, even more media).
So the Habs may have to beat other offers by 20% just to compete for Gardiner's services. On top of all that he's been brain-washed to hate the Habs for his entire career. So I think the chances they land him are low. But he would be a good fit.

I would hope Tatar and Petry combined are worth more than a middle 1st, 2nd, and 3rd pick. Have to agree with comments above that Weber and Danault in particular are too valuable to development of the younger guys for the moment.
interesting concept, so who do you take with the 3 first rounders?

Habs ready for the playoffs
First 3 trades don't look unreasonable. Two good prospects plus first and second round picks for Fowler might be enough if you also take Eaves contract away ($2.1M one more year). But I don't think you can expect to send Kulikov back to Anaheim without retaining some salary (he is $4.3M for 1 more year)
I'd love to have Fowler to shelter Mete, Romanov, Kulak and other young Habs D-men over the next few years. But Anaheim won't give up a top D like that unless you pay a premium for it.
Puljujarvi's value is still higher than Evans's ceiling, so might have to add more there from MTL side.
Nice lineup though

Firing up the rebuild machine
Sorry to hear that only a month after re-signing Koskinen you're talking about buying him out before the contract is up. Maybe he'll surprise and be solid for a few years.
Nice job, you've obviously done some research on the draft picks.
I agree with the comments above about the price for Klefbom - he might be worth that on the open market but as a Habs fan I would prefer they use the #21 pick themselves (most likely an offensive LD like Thomas Harley) and be patient. Some of the younger RD prospects could also play their off-side for a bit to fill the gap in development.
Hope the Oilers can cut a deal with Ottawa to take away one of their bad contracts and create some cap space.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>math731</b></div><div>And if EDM add Nurse (great LHD) and MTL add another 2nd?</div></div>
Now that's more like it. Habs get 2 good players for key spots and a major cap dump, while the Oilers free a ton of cap space, get a proven top 6 roster player and 2 high end prospects along with a couple of 2nd round picks. That might work out for both sides

The Latest Rumors
Calgary loves Valimaki, but this might be workable. Big benefits to both sides. Flames management knows how rare it is for all the pieces to come together in one season, with minimal injuries to key players. They would be wise to go for it.
Detroit should not need to retain so much, maybe just the $1.5M on Howard and nothing on Nyquist. Or alternatively they keep the retained $$ and Calgary adds another B-prospect or draft pick. Detroit might want one of the young goalies in the Flames system to help their rebuild (Parsons or Gillies ?).

I like Niku too, but the Jets would be giving up both an expensive older Left D and their best young left D prospect. So they will want something more in return. Maybe one of the promising montreal right defense prospects like Fleury would help. Benn is solid depth and Hudon a question mark so not a lot of value there for the Jets without adding something.
I like Pageau if the price is right. He's not cheap for a 3-4 liner though, but UFA in a year. Might help the depth if Poehling and Suzuki need time.

Deadline 2019
I like Matheson - the problem is that the trade is a proven top 4 defenseman for 2nd or 3rd line defensive forward. So Montreal would have to add more.
And including Alzner greatly reduces the value of the return for Florida - at this point he is a potential 5-6 defenseman who is earning far too many $$$ .
Might be closer if it was Matheson for Lekhonen + a young defenseman like Juulsen (but no Alzner cap dump included)

Agreed - definitely Nurse will cost more than that. But if it involves taking a piece of Lucic contract back that brings the price down.
Maybe Nurse + Lucic (if Edm retain $2M) in exchange for Shaw + Juulsen + Fleury + 2nd. The difference in annual cap hit is about $2M higher for Montreal.

That package might get you in the ballpark for Fowler alone. But likely Habs would need to add. Maybe Juulsen + Ylonen +2nd +3rd for Fowler. Not sure Evans would be seen as any more than 4th line upside by other organizations.

Habs Oilers Nurse
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LobbysOilers</b></div><div>so we're retaining 33% of that contract AND paying a 1st and 2nd and a prospect? wow you might be on something strong. nobody needs to get rid of a player that badly. also you cant get nurse for that unless you added the 1st and 2nd rounders and a prospect</div></div>
See response to mk458 above for potential value of Nurse and why it may make sense to move him. No matter how you slice it, he's likely not a top 1-2 defenseman on most teams - Habs current left D is an exception so he is #1 there. Klefbom and Larsson are much better defensively. But I understand that he's very valuable, especially if Sekera can't get back to speed for last few years of his contract.
So regarding the Lucic contract - how many years of McDavid and Draisatl's prime years do you want to burn up while waiting for that Lucic cap hit anchor to be lifted. The Oilers have very little cap flexibility and giving up some high picks 2 years down the road is going to have no effect on the NHL team in the next 3-4 years. Nobody will touch that contract unless the Oilers make the offer sweet enough. And without moving it, the options to rework the team around the young core are very limited.
I'm giving an actual NHL D-man (Kulak) back, so you could say he's equal to a B-level prospect (Safin). So I'm asking for a 2021 1st rounder most likely in 10-20 range as the Oilers trend upward in standings, plus a second round pick in return for $16M worth of Milan Lucic over the next 4 years. You've seen him play recently, do you really want that kind of pain for 4 more years?
I do sincerely hope the Oilers management can turn it around, I want to see them succeed. And the last thing I want to see is Connor McDavid at age 24 so frustrated with a flawed team that he pulls a Panarin-type fit in mid-contract and wants out.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jfstompers</b></div><div>You need to add pieces to keep up with toronto and Tampa and Boston even so you sure you want lucic and his dead money. I mean he's really really not good</div></div>
Oh I know he's really really not good these days. I see him all the time where I live, and it's even worse when you're in the arena. But that's why there's a high cost attached to move him out. Lucic can still play a reasonable 3-4 line role and be useful, but he's just way overpaid for the type of player he is now.
I think Montreal can handle some relatively dead money if the price is right - they should not be trying to really compete with Toronto & Tampa in the next couple years, that's a waste of effort. Assuming guys like Tatar and Petry are moved out before they go UFA next year, the Habs shouldn't be hurting for cap space for a couple more years.
Because i'm showing 30 guys on the "depth chart" the cap hit shown is misleading. If you send the younger guys back to junior and AHL and get the roster down to 23, it's actually about $7M in cap space still available in 2019-20

Habs Oilers Nurse
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mk458</b></div><div>That first oilers trade is brutal. Nurse is a 6'4" fast skating, hard hitting, defensively sound, offensively gifted top 4 dman who's on pace for 42 points this season. If you want him be prepared to give up something of value. I don't see the Oilers giving him up unless you give us a legit top line winger back. Gallagher at least, but even then, I'd rather have nurse, who's still an rfa after this contract. Just being honest. Nurse is just too good to give up unless we get a great return</div></div>
Thanks for the honesty. You may be right, that he's too good to give up. But I don't think the value is all that far off. Maybe the 3rd rounder goes MTL to Edmonton instead. Essentially the Oilers get two young and relatively proven players for the price of one. They have a lot of gaps to fill with competent players, and I have no doubt Lekhonene and Juulsen are both very competent NHL players just a step down from Nurse's level.

My final attempt on Nurse
Habs are paying too much I think. Assuming Juulsen's eye injury heals so he's ready to go again next fall, he's a likely future defensive top 4 d-man. And Leks is a well established 3rd liner. I think the Oilers would be crazy not to take this package.
I think Juulsen plus Lekhonen alone would be more than fair value for Nurse. Nurse is likely a career 3-4 d-man. I like him but the Oilers would probably need to add a pick. Maybe Juulsen + Lekhonen for Nurse + 2nd rounder is closer.
As for Lucic - I think the Oilers will have to retain some significant salary on Lucic if they ever want to move that anchor contract out. In your trade you're essentially giving the Oilers a second round pick for Lucic at full cost for 4 years. More likely the Oilers will have to keep some salary, and add another decent roster player and draft pick to the package to move him out.
Maybe i'll give it a try with my own AGM related to same players. And then prepare for a beating from both sides...
Just checked Nurse's stats - he picks up more points than I realized...hmmm

How do you find trade value for a player
One other piece of advice - don't take it personally if someone makes fun of your trade or says the value is way off without explaining .
Everybody has strong opinions, especially about the value of their own team's players. Just respectfully ask for some explanation from them and most of the time you'll get a lot of good ideas.

Flames love Lindholm too much. They hit a home run in last years trade for him. They likely say no and take their chances with Rittich starting the playoffs instead. Everybody needs a first playoff run to prove themselves. The time is now for Big Save Dave
And of course the Caps are defending champs they are not going to blow it up in net quite yet
