M Tkachuk to CAR Scenario
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DirtyDangles</b></div><div>Except that the Flyers could say "we will pay you $9 mil per year for 7 years if you wait" and then don't have to give up anything. He makes $1 mil less over the term but can get more than that in his 8th year as a UFA. You might get a pick or 2 but it will not be a 1st!</div></div>
Going from 8 million to 9 million is a huge jump. Plus that extra year is the main reason teams are looking to trade for him rather than wait until FA. Nolan Patrick doesn't seem like he will work in Philly, so there isn't much to lose there. Going for Hamilton indicates you are all in for this year and the first should be somewhere from 20-32. I'm a fan of both teams, I would not mind a trade like this coming from Carolina. Defense has been a mess since Niskanen retired and messed up the pairings. Hamilton brings that stability back and the rest of the D should follow. No more Provorov - Braun.

Penguins
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SCT2016</b></div><div>that makes sense. i don’t really feel like a veteran is needed to be brought in for someone who’s already a proven starter in the league, but i can see someone who can play a 1a/1b role signing. The Penguins as well need a veteran to split with Jarry, but as i felt CGY being the most accurate spot for DeSmith, I chose them and for similar reasons you explained. thank you for your comment too!</div></div>
Yeah if DeSmith was a free agent it would make sense, I just don’t see Calgary giving up an asset to acquire a good backup, especially because Markstrom is such a workhorse that they won’t play much anyway. I said veteran mostly because those are the types of guys that are UFAs and nobody internal can fill the role (I don’t think Zagidulin’s ready yet and he’s closest). A cheap backup that won’t cost any assets, just a little money, is probably the route the Flames take.
