BIG TRADES!!!!!!!!!!!! PLAYOFFS?
Unless you trade the whole team and the farm for Vegas, the Canucks have no chance of making the playoffs.
You need new management, including Linden. The decisions on July 1 were baffling. There is no direction, no clear vision.
Hope Vancouver can win 20 games. 4 against Edmonton would be even better.

Deadline deal for the Cup run
I grew up in the 70s in Calgary as a Canucks fan. When the Flames arrived, I became a huge Flames fan, who wouldn't. But I always liked the Canucks.
In 1997, I moved to Vernon BC. I became a Canucks fan again, it was kinda in my blood.
Then they trade for and draft the two sisters. I have NEVER cheered for the 'nucks since.
I said then, the Sedins will NEVER win a cup because they are weak and disappear when the going gets tough, like in the playoffs. Kesler almost won them a cup, but the Sedins were almost non existent after the Chicago series got rough.
Let the twins drift quietly into the fading West Coast sunset. They have no place in a hockey rink, It can get rough in one.

trdeJong - You nailed it on JG. I like the idea of sheltering JG with Bennett. He will get Ferland as it stands now, which may help. Not sure you split JG from Mony yet, but it may come to that.
I have Freddie and Hathaway in this to figure out what cap is available. I don't think the Flames should do anything else until we assess how Ferland works on the top line, and at the very least, until the trade deadline.
I actually posted this as what I think the Flames will do, not what I think should happen. I have Hathaway and F. Hamilton in the minors. Up in their place is 2 of Shink or Poirier, or Foo, or whoever earns it in camp. I have Shink with Backlund and Frolik, Janko centring Versteeg and Stajan (to give Janko really good support in year 1). The second of Poirer Foo or Shink gets Stajans spot on some nights, or when an injury hits. Brouwer is the 14th forward.

I am not a D. Hamilton fan and I wouldn't go anywhere near this plan. BT spends the whole summer trying to build a contender, then dismantles it like this. I don't think so.

Min Wild - thoughts?
After looking at this a bit more, getting Brouwer for Coyle, even with the retained salary, doesn't really help Minnys cap out by much. The only way they do a deal is if it clears cap and gives them a solid forward. Ferland is the right cap hit, but I wouldn't do that deal if I was the Flames.

Min Wild - thoughts?
One thing that hit me right away is that McDonald would not be the goalie prospect. Minn would have to have one of Rittich, Gillies, or Parsons, and Calgary isn't trading Parsons.
I keep looking at the Minny roster, and there is the potential for them to HAVE to move a piece. As said above, all depends on the cost of Nino and Granlund. Nino hits me as costing more than $5. I think $5.5 is fair. Granlund I have seen on here getting 8 years at $8.0. That's a ton of cap hit. Even at $6.5, which is close to about right, it gets thin.
The problem for Minny is next year when Zucker and Dumba come up. With $5 and $7 for Nino and Granlund, it gets tough to keep both of them..
The only other thought on this is on Stajan. He is very versatile and worth very little today on the market. He is insurance as the Flames start the season. He can take over if young guys don't live up to expectation, like Foo, Janko, or Lazar. But at the trade deadline, he will fetch a 2nd round pick from a contender.

I agree - looks really good.
But sending Brouwer to the minors really does nothing for cap. It would only create an additional $1.025 in cap space. $3.425 million would still be a cap hit. While it does clear him out to create space on the roster, he is still a 3rd or 4th line player in the NHL, we just pay about $3.5 million too much. Find the right line for him and we are better off keeping him on the roster. He is capable of playing 1st line PP and against Anaheim in the playoffs, the PP did kick butt with him on it. (Not that I want him taking time from Ferland on the PP).
Personally, I think he should be in the press box until there is an injury. I believe he is untradeable at this point, even if we ate half his salary.

Interesting that I am in your camp on JG, and I get absolutely slammed by everyone when I talk about it on Flamesnation.ca. He hits me as being of the same mold as the Sedins - can get you to the playoffs and be a candidate for MVP getting you there, but will never win you a cup.

Helping Solve Minnys Cap Issues, And Getting Better
No - they still have serious cap issues. They only have 8 forwards under contract, and 6 defensemen, including Ryan Murphy who many are saying is not NHL quality.
Granlund at $6.5 (many are saying he is due more than that, closer to $8), Nino at $5.0, which may be slightly low, and Foligno at $2.5 (last year he made $2.25 also has earned a raise and that is not much of one). That is $14 million of the $16.4 available. They are at 11 forwards.
With $2.4 available (and that is if all the signings go well), even if they leave Murphy on the roster, they need to sign or promote 4 players. That breaks down to $600,000 per player. If even one of the 4 makes more than $600,000 then they can't make cap. I left Svedberg at $700,000 in goal. If Granlund signs for $7 to $7,5 and Nino gets the $5.5 everyone says he is due, they will need 4 players to fill the roster with only $900,000 to $1.4 of cap available.
Next year may be even worse. Koivu's contract comes to an end, but Zucker, Dumba, and a backup will all need raises. They will still have a Dman problem with only 4 under contract if they sign Dumba.

If Jagr did come here, and I don't think he should because of his lack of speed, then he can be had for way less than $3.25 per season. There is talk he may not get signed.
He is not quick enough to play on the top line, and we have enough bottom 6 forwards to fill all the spots. Whether it is prospects or veterans, we have depth. We need that top RW.

I think he will get a 2 year show me contract for under 2 million. Learning from the bad Bouma contract. My guess is we will have about 3 - 5 million to spend tomorrow and it will go to an old right shot bottom six winger.
I also don't think Klimchuk is close, Shink, Janko, Foo, Mangiapane are all ahead of him.</div></div>
Open to best 3 prospects up front. Don't care who they are.
Ferland is being pencilled in as the first line RW. Has proved he has value. Would say myself that he is worth more than Bennett based on last season. He should command what I put in, but if he does not sign soon, I think he could be the one guy that gets an offer sheet from another team, then see what the nightmare is to fit him in under the cap. RFA market could see $2.5 to $3.0 for 3 to 4 years no problem. Teams will pay the draft picks to take him away, or put pressure on BT to keep him with a serious cap issue.
Kulak, Rittich, Gillies, and any other prospect listed, so you save $100,000 or $200,000 each. Still means we sit at $1.4 million cap room if all 4 sign for $200,000 less. Not really a difference. There are minimum raises under the CBA. They are not that far from the min, except for Kulak, but he is going to be the 6th DMan.
We are not freeing up $3.0 without moving pieces out.

Yes - Foo is missing. I too am not sure of where he is at. As I mentioned above, looking at 2 forward prospects in the lineup, it doesn't really matter which 2. It could be Foo and Janko, or Foo and Klimchuk, or Shink. It really doesn't change the cap too much.</div></div>

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jcambers</b></div><div>Why break up the 3M line - Tkachuk, Backlund, and Frolik were great last year. I don't see why everyone is so content on breaking that line up right now.
Though I'm not set on Ferland stick around on that 3rd line, until we can upgrade the RW position (and dump Brouwer's contract?), the line-up looks fine.</div></div>
The reason speaks to the weaknesses that were exposed during the playoffs against Anaheim.
Flames were minus 41 collectively in the playoffs, no member was positive. Getzlaff shut down and beat up Monahans line. Backlunds line played to a draw against Keslers line. There was no 3rd and 4th lines that was enough of a threat to score. Matching the Flames became easy for the Ducks.
Put a young kid with Backlund to help with development, much like Tkachuk had that benefit last year, and create a 3rd powerhouse line that can score, and do a good job defensively. Lazar, many will say is not the guy, but if he lives up to his talent ability, he will be one of the key players. He needed a wake up call in Ottawa, he got it and will rebound this season. I believe by the end of the season the Bennett-Tkachuk-Lazar line will be better than Monahans line.

Analysing what this all means, it shows that Calgary really needs to move out some salary. Moving any of, Brouwer, Stajan, or Bouma, will be very difficult. Stajan and or Bouma may be movable at the trade deadline, but that does not answer the concerns right now.
So who is reasonably available, has value, and is expendable?
I would suggest Ferland, packaged up with a prospect, and a draft pick, for a top 6 forward, that would be an upgrade to play with Gaudreau and Monahan. $2.73 cap space and Ferlands $2.5, would free up about $5.25 for a top 6 RW or Centre. Without moving someone, there are not many top 6 forwards that are available for $2.25.
Then what for the veteran 5-6 DMan concerns?

Way underestimating what it will take to sign Ferland and Bennett.
Honestly don't think anyone wants to see Phaneuf back in a Flames uniform. He may have smartened up in Ottawa, but he is a nightmare that would only mess up the dressing room.
Ottawa isn't about to retain $3.0 either.
Until the contracts are in, or more reasonably assessed, it is hard to tell what we can afford. both Phaneuf and Neal, not possible, even with Ottawa eating all that salary.

Treliving, please buy out Brouwer
You just can't be paying Brouwers cap hit for six years. Better to eat it for a year, maybe 2. If he rebounds, great, if not, then consider it next year.
I don't see anyone taking Stajan (or Bouma for that matter) off our hands until the trade deadline, - maybe - if we are lucky.

Just can't be paying for Brouwer for 6 years. Better to suffer through 1 or 2 then buyout last year for $1.5 for 2.
Min signing the prospects is disrespectful. It also violates the CBA. There are minimum contract increases depending on the value of the contract. Those rules are not met. Ferland will never say yes to $945. He is a first liner as we sit here.
We may not like Stajans contract, but the team is stronger before the trades than it is after. That 4th line, and the 2 spares are weak. We may be talking about AHLers in your lineup, not NHLers.

I like the thought of taking a chance on Yakupov. Doesn't make any sense for most teams but for a desperate Vancouver it makes total sense.
Until Benning is gone just kiss any hope of improving goodbye. The real question is if Linden should be cut loose as well. The whole management team lacks the experience to deal with the task at hand.
On a positive note, this is the last season for the Sedins. Brighter days ahead.

Versteeg Done and a couple pieces
I know everyone wants to unload Brouwer and Bouma, but it is just not going to happen easily. We will have to live with them both this season and in the case of Bouma just bury him in the minors if we need the cap space. Bouma may be tradable at the deadline for a 3rd or 4th pick, but I think that is even unlikely.
As far as Brouwer goes there is just no reason for a team to take him, even if we retain $1.0. Even with a huge rebound year who would want him for 2 more years. It just doesn't make any sense to give up anything to take him. Buyout in year 4 may make sense, but to costly right now to buy him out for 6 long years.

On a positive note, this should be the last season with the Sedins, then the real rebuild can begin.
What is the cap minimum? Maybe this team could play 1 to 2 years in the AHL, and then get moved back to the NHL in 2019.
Hate to say it but the real change will start when Benning is gone, and it might take Linden to be gone as well. They simply do not have the experience to deal with a task this big. This team is in serious trouble, and nothing is getting done to improve it during a time when other teams are making significant moves to either lay in a team now or set themselves up to build for the future.

move Ferland?
Ferland does seem like that piece with tons of value that just doesn't fit in the Flames lineup. I have him leaving for assets too. I like him in a deal for Nino. I think it is somewhat interesting to Minny as well. Comes down to what other pieces Minny would want. That has to be close to being good enough. Minny does have cap issues, this solves them with a few good pieces to replace Nino.
I would say you have to sign a veteran DMan to anchor Kulak and or Wotherspoon and or Andersson (I think Andersson and Kulak start the season on the Flames). Need the experience, and depth. Bart needs to not play 1 minute for us this year
I also think that Rittich and Gillies battle for the back up position. I don't think Johnson is coming back.
I think this is a lineup that we could see on October 4th in Edmonton if BT can get a deal done for Nino. I have Klimchuk with Backlund, and Janko as the 4th line centre. I also call Bennetts line the 2nd. That line is the one I think would be the difference against teams like Edmonton and Anaheim, and have been promoting it for a month or more. They would be deadly.
The problem with playing Anaheim is that after Getzlaff neutralizes Monahans line, Kesler kills Backlunds line, then there was such a big fall off for us. Anaheim (And Edmonton) cant match these top 3 lines and one of them runs rampant over the over teams 3rd line. Lazar may be our best weapon by the time this season is done.
