I truly don't know a single person on Earth who believes John Gibson is still in his prime. Darcy Keumper was a better goalie (and still is a better goalie) than john Gibson is now when that trade happened.

Show me a goalie who has gotten significantly more than that, especially one whose contract is considered underwater by most metrics? The goalie deals recently (Georgiev for two 3rds and a 5th), Vanecek for a 3rd.
This is pretty comparable to Darcy Kuemper with retention for a late 1st and a 3rd that the Avs and Coyotes did a few years back, and Keumper was much cheaper then than Gibson is now.
Maybe you could quibble and say the Devils should add another non-draft pick asset like any non-Seamus Casey prospect, and I think that most Devils fans would be fine with that.

Feels like McLeod is going to cost much more than this moving forward. Also very very nervous about what that Hanifin contract would do to us when the cap crunch comes to our D-core and Hughes/Nemec are due big raises. If you look at what Power got, Luke is about to cost us 8-9 million AAV. Maybe if you're lucky he takes 8 million so he doesn't outshine his brother, but more likely Jack is gonna tell him to get his bag.
I think Toffoli on the two year deal seems good, and then a low-cost 1-2 year deal for a third pairing defender seems to be the only real option for 24-25. I like Spencer Knight, but I almost wonder if slightly more assets could get us Carter Hart instead.

Both trades feel a tad rich. I think a 3rd and Filmon for Tanev seems right, as a rental. A 1st, Vanecek, and Clarke for Gibson feels right given the retention over 3-4 years.

Yeah he's been much, much better. But he's also still below his xG pretty significantly. I think Mercer will be fine and will slot into his 40-50 point range he probably will reliably be in throughout his career. I think KJ could be a 60-70 point player though, more if he plays with Jack or Bratt.

Extremely bad take. Kent Johnson is going to be a much, much better player than Matt Coronato over the course of their respective careers. I watched Kent Johnson at Michigan, and I think he was better than Cooley in college. Kid's going to be a stud. It's just a matter of time.

He's playing on the third line with Haula who is I'm pretty sure cursed by some ancient diety to never finish any grade A scoring chances.

Anyway I think this is at least a somewhat interesting idea. I don't really get why Columbus who isn't going anywhere this year is really insisting on Patrik Laine 2C behind Fantilli and isn't just letting KJ cook.
I think the Devils should look for ways to turn future prospects/picks into assets that are a closer to being full time players. They've found late gems enough that I think they'll be able to continue to do that while cracking their window wide open.

I don't think Mercer for KJ is a lateral move at all by the way. I think those are two entirely different types of player. Might not make sense for the Devils to do a trade like that, but Dawson Mercer is not a play driver. He's a 2-way secondary scorer and support forward.

I definitely think there's a case KJ is worth Mercer. Given their respective likely contract situations. I love Dawgson, but players as dynamic as KJ do not grow on trees. You could probably slot a Nolan Foote or Gritsyuk in on the 3rd line and not miss much.

I will say though that there's a case to be made that the Devils would be better suited trading Dawson Mercer (who is about to be much more expensive but is a much more capable young center) for Kent Johnson, who seems to be a more natural play driver, will be cheaper, but is less reliable in the D-zone.
If something around that worked out, you'd just slide Holtz up to the 3rd line and add a bottom 6 two way winger with some size in his place with the cap space that is freed up.

Well the reason he hasn't stuck in Columbus is that they want him to play center and he's not ready to be a top 6 center. We have no such need with Hughes and Hischier and in fact, have plenty of other center capable players. So we can just let him cook on the wing and be super creative next to Jack or Nico. No matter how you pair up the top 6 here, it would be incredibly dynamic, and it strengthens our bottom 6 to have Mercer and Haula there.

I think he'd be pretty dynamic playing on one of the top 2 wings. I think It'll probably cost at least a 1st and a 3rd plus the prospects to get him, but in this scenario, the Devils likely wouldn't have a 1st available this year. Maybe a 1st next year and a 2nd this year plus a good prospect in Gritsyuk who can step in now for Columbus is enough, I don't know

An absolutely lateral move (or downgrade?) for a pure nutcase who will probably ruin our sterling clubhouse chemistry and who costs 1+ million more than Vitek for the next 3+ seasons?
AND we have to give up a 2nd round pick for the pleasure?
Never been more certain that OP is secretly a Blues fan. Absolutely unhinged idea. This is worse than the Josh Anderson for a 1st trades.

Alex Holtz isn't good (we have to give up the ghost already), and Pius Suter is a significant improvement on Lazar and Nosek. I don't think we're likely to do much better at the deadline than adding a Garland-like contributor to our bottom 6.

I don't know that Boqvist is, especially on a short term deal. I don't see many teams coming to offer him an offer sheet, and the Devils don't really need to offer more than the QO to him. You may run the risk of an Offer sheet with McLeod because of his faceoff capabilities but it seems unlikely and even if it does, you probably have the forward depth to just let him walk. They have some leverage with the bottom 6 for sure.
I think McLeod probably gets sub 2 AAV unless he gets a 4 year deal like Kampf.

He probably is, at least in sheltered third pair minutes. But it's a lot of faith to put into two rookie defenders on a Cup contender (plus a second year D in Bahl.) I'd rather have the insurance of another minutes eating puck-moving defenseman like Bear.

I'd be fine with this, though I'd prefer to just let Boqvist center the third line and let Haula walk. This also ignores that Curtis Lazar is under contract for the next two years. I feat the Tatar term might be too short to get this done with how well he's played.

People freaking out because Timo Meier has scored 1 goal in 5 games when the line is shooting 8-12 % below their true talent on-ice shooting percentage is hilarious. Dude is gonna eat in the playoffs.
I would be very disappointed if the team deviates from a top 6 of:
Tatar - Hischier - Mercer
Meier - Hughes - Bratt
in the playoffs.

I don't see a world where Devils are interested in trading for Addison when they don't have space to give him any PP time (with Hughes and Hamilton there). It seems much more likely that they would just resign Graves or Severson.

Arizona has no more retention spots so it would need to be a different third party broker, but finally a completely unrealistic Josh Anderson trade proposal I can get behind.
Bahl and Daws for Josh Anderson at a sub 1.4 million cap hit without even any picks exchanged would be a delightful turn of events after having to listen to proposals involving us giving up 1st round picks for him every year for the last 6 years
(to say the least there's no way Montreal retains 50% through 2027 on him nevermind Arizona taking 25% of it until then for the low low cost of a 5th round pick lol)
