We don't hate paying our players, unfortunately, with a cap, there's only so much to go around. As for overvaluing our players...every fan base has people like that not just Toronto.

Can a team just offer sheet him already (and he accepts)?!?! lol
I'm dying to see the gain/loss on a four 1st offer sheet over the period. I still think depending on the player being received and the team's organizational standing at that time, that it makes sense to do it.

He would most likely have to miss the year, as his trade value is down due to his crazy demands and I can't see any other team wanting to deal with that.

Marners Camp Guessed Wrong
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>I don't know if the Marner actually thought they were going to get McDavid ore even Matthews money, but they were hoping so. Sure looks they aren't getting that money from the Leafs. But is there any team what wants to pay him substantial more than the Leafs offer? Doubtful. But Marner is in good company. Virtually all of the other top RFAs who are coming off their ELCs haven't signed either. Or you suggesting they all get traded too? Or that all of them reamained unsigned when the season starts.</div></div>
The Domino effect will happen after one of them signs. Apparently teams and the player agents didn't view the Aho signing as setting the market value. Thanks to the media.

Kudos to marner for sticking to his guns. It will do nothing but help players. I have very little sympathy for billionaire conglomerates like Rogers or any other NHL owner.
Fans siding with billionaires over their favorite players is disappointing

I've been quoting 2 yrs for 16 million (8 AVV)
5 yrs for 46.5 million (9.3 AVV)
or 6 yrs for 58 million (9.666 AVV)
I think the Leafs don't talk about 3 or 4 yr contracts and Marner doesn't talk about 7 or 8 yr contracts.
2 yr deal might be good for Marner, if he ever hits a 100 pt season than 11+ million contract belongs to him long term.
5 yr deal to watch and see what Matthews and Nylander get on UFA.
6 yr deal to walk into UFA with J.T. if they continue their partnership.

If the Leafs sign Gardiner they need to avoid playing the Bruins in the first round, even if it means taking a wild card spot.

If any team proposed a trade of 2 1sts, a 2nd and a 3rd to the Leafs for Marner they wouldn't take it :tearsofjoy</div></div>
They actually have $11,165,301 in room when you put Horton on LTIR, and move all of the "excess" players to the minors. Also you can be 10% over the cap for right now.

In that same reality, I will be trading Devin Shore and Jacob Silfverberg for Mitch Marner, and then signing him for 8 x $2.5 mil.

what would the Wild give for Marner
I agree with Ryminister. I really like Spurgeon, but if Minny wants Marner the talks start with Dumba, or it's not happening.

what would the Wild give for Marner
The value isn't bad, but the players might not be the right choice. Any Marner trade starts with Dumba over Spurgeon. Age difference and contract status are the 2 big factors there. Then a young, up and coming roster player, Greenway fits that description but I'd aim for Luke Kunin. Only 21 and a well needed right handed centre, that might be the thing Toronto needs most actually. Then multiple picks involved and perhaps another prospects. Toronto has to add a bit as well, but those should be the main pieces coming back. I doubt if Minnesota would "want to give" that for Marner, but it seems to be pretty good value for him.
I've suggested this in the past:
:wild
Mitch Marner
Callé Rosén
Toronto 2020 3rd round pick
:mapleleafs
Matt Dumba
Luke Kunin
Conor Dewar
Minnesota 2020 1st round pick (top 5 protected)
Minnesota 2021 5th round pick

Value of Zaitsev and Brown
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Smitty426</b></div><div>Sammy, so I've read elsewhere where his $ is not bad, its the term you guys are not happy with. But it seems like all proposals are looking for a shutdown d man (Adam Larsson for example). I don't watch TML's, but is he not that? He's playing with the wrong partner based on what I read from you. Is that all correct? Thx</div></div>
Its correct! Im not happy with the term but also Zaitsev was brought to NA as offensive defenceman who has exceptional defensive and shutdown capabilities for an offensive guy. He always was offensive Dman as I remember him from his days in KHL and actually Ozhiganov was defensive partner for him for few years thats why Ozhiganov seems better player than Zaitsev. Oz was always defensive defender while Zaitsev offensive one. His play for national team at last IIHF World championship was exceptional and he was ppg player. Why? He was paired with two-way guys on his LHD side. He has become that. The fact that he is paired with wrong guy is true as well. Gardiner has been horrible defensively and actually was never good with Zaitsev. They are both affected by them being together. Zaitsev was paired with Rielly in first year of his NHL career and was 36 point or so guy. He is that and I actually see him (if not traded) being paired with Dermott next year which would help him getting his offence into place.

Value of Zaitsev and Brown
Who was trading Zaitsev, Brown and pick for Norris caliber D man? If someone is doing that he is clearly stupid.. Also Adam Ernes value is equivalent of 4th liner.
For me.. Browns value is Mirco Mueller and pick as they are similarly young and helpful to their respective teams. Brown has higher potential and contract for next season. Zaitsevs value is Radko Gudas and pick or AHL talent. He plays with Gardiner as offensive D man.. he should not play with Gardiner. Its destroying him as a player..

Test1
If the leafs can find the right suitor for zaitsev I think we get a 4th or 5th back. Maybe even just a conditional pick based on performance. If not I don’t see it taking more than a 2nd or 3rd to unload him. If other players need to be moved it will be for futures or cheap defensive help. Pysyk, I don’t feel is the answer.
My two cents...
