Zaitsev requested a trade

Description
It was reported that Zaitsev wants to be moved and I think he makes sense as an option behind Dumba for the Wild if we decide to move on from Spurgeon. We all know that Zucker is being shopped and his name has been confirmed to have come up in trade talks with Toronto last summer. Fenton was also reportedly in the running to land Nylander but wasn't willing to move Spurgeon nor Dumba for him, but I think Spurgeon could potentially walk next offseason to go to a contender. The Wild move Zucker and Spurgeon to Toronto to help them win a cup in the next 5 seasons. I think Zucker could EASILY score 30+ goals next to Marner and Tavares. Spurgeon gives Toronto their much-needed top pairing RD and flips that roster from a top-heavy offensive unit into a well-rounded team.

I know it's a long shot that Nylander is traded, but Toronto really needs to gain cap space to re-sign Marner. If I'm Dubas, I'd trade Nylander before I trade Marner if it comes down to moving one of them.

  2. Zucker, Jason
Additional Details:
Spurgeon agrees to a 5 year x $7.25M contract extension

Toronto saves $3,368,616 in cap space next season to afford Marner and with Marleau coming off the books Toronto will have more than enough to extend Spurgeon.
2.
MIN
  1. Puljujärvi, Jesse [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
The Wild take the risk and add a right shot wing that they hope can develop into a solid middle 6 winger for them.
EDM

Additional Details:
Edmonton adds some center depth with Ek and moves on from a player that hasn't worked out for them.

Did you even read my description?

If they move zaitsev they wouldn't need to move nylander. If marner is asking for to much then they should at least be looking to move him

Thanks! Yep I agree I think Nylander will be on the Toronto roster come opening night, but something has to budge. I'm really reading between the lines here, but Zucker reportedly was involved in trade talks with the Leafs last offseason and Fenton was also involved with trade talks revolving around Nylander this fall.

Teams rarely trade young assets for those which are 6+ years their senior.

I would lose my mind in a good way if the Leafs actually made that happen. That seems like an unbelievably good trade to me with the Spurgeon extension.

Not necessarily, I don't think any team will be willing to eat Zaitsev's full $4.5M... They'll want Toronto to either retain salary or take another dump, and I don't think either of those options will give the Leafs enough space to get a Marner deal done.

I just don't think Marner is the one that should be traded. That guys is absolutely electric on the ice.

Knowing Fenton it'll be Zaitsev + Brown + Bracco for Spurgeon (as a rental)

I 100% want to keep marner if he is willing to take the right deal. He isnt worth 11.5.

I think teams want zaitsev and with the cap going up his deal isnt looking the worst anymore but he isnt right for the leafs. If they arent able to get assets for him I would hope they would take an uninsured ltir contract back from a team that cant afford it

TanSor you have made a great thread. I really like the basis of this trade, Toronto needs more "sandpaper" and less finesse, also retaining $$$ is a bonus. True minor alterations may be made. I want to see this thread from the Leafs side, along with other trades to fill out roster. Thanks again TanSor this was great!

I'd be pretty surprised if he is signed over $11M... you never know, I guess. I just don't think you trade him. Like I said, if it came down to it I'd trade Nylander over Marner in a heartbeat, and I'm a big Nylander fan.

Like I said, I don't think the Leafs will save enough money in any Zaitsev deal to clear enough space for their pending RFA's. If a team can't afford an LTIR deal (which doesn't count towards the cap but a salary is still payed out), how are they going to afford Zaitsev? That logic doesn't make sense to me... I do like Zaitsev and I think he has some value for the on-ice product, but he's overpayed by about $1M and his term is about 2 years too long. Both of those make him a tough asset to move unless you take on another bad contract.

This trade makes so much sense, down to the dovetail between the expiration of Spurgeon's contract and Marleau's, that it should happen.

If they trade Zaitsev, they’ll spend that $4.5m on another defenseman to fill the hole he leaves. Who are they going to get that is an upgrade over Zaitsev for the same or less money?
