Offseason Moves - Vegas
Martinez probably isn't signing for less than 5.5 somewhere for three years. He's been phenomenal in Vegas and hasn't made the huge money you sometimes see throughout his career.
Having already won two Cups, and had conference and cup clinching goals, I'm pretty sure he's going to chase as much money as he can and he deserves it.

Defense master plan Who accepts and who doesnt
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Vegasloveforthebills</b></div><div>Vegas absolutely declines.
Why would they pay Edler 500 K more for one season when they have McNabb for two. And both will be playing 1LD with Petro.
Then trade the guy who they have playing 1C and a first round pick for a winger that will be on their second if not third line.
And they have that 1C under a cheap deal for three more years
I know people don’t get him playing there, but he does fit with it two wingers he has in stone and Pacioretty</div></div>
Vegas declines easily and I'm happy with his play but Stephenson is in no way a 1C. It's even kind of disingenuous to say he plays that role for us, he doesn't in the sense everyone thinks about it.
He is in the position that many good third liners have found themselves in over the years where they are the third forward (usually its a winger, not a center) thrown in with two tremendous linemates that help them look like they are a top six forward.
Stone drives that line offensively and defensively like a 1C everyone thinks of would and Pacioretty is an elite creative and goal scoring player who also carries a lot of the weight. Of course Stephenson fits with Pacioretty and Stone, any center who is even decent will look great with those two playing how they have been.
It also doesn't hurt that they need Glass to help stabilize the line with Roy and Tuch to give us three dangerous lines, and he is.

Vegas won't give Winnipeg things to take their best player then trade him for more things.
Vegas doesn't desperately need to clear space, even if they wanted to clear some they aren't going to give away so much when there would be other options to move some cap.
Vegas certainly doesn't need 7 million in cap space this season and doesn't need Stastny. They would be giving up Korczak and a high 2nd and their best player currently all for 7 million cap space that they won't fully use.
Then they would have to go and trade more assets for a big name player to justify trading Fleury and probably not be all that improved at the end of it. The return is nowhere near cost effective.

Certainly a contender but not top 3 like some think imo.</div></div>
Martinez has been nothing but solid in top four and McNabb has played like a good top four three years now. Whitecloud is super exciting how well he took to the league in his first year and I'm very confident in him. Beyond that, Holden is a good 6/7 and Hague and Coghlan are possibilities to make the jump this season. The defense should be fine.
The center issue is the issue. No team is good at everything and it's definitely the weak area of the team.
If Glass can step into a top six center role this season, however, then they are fine. This season really comes down to Glass and his progress, in my opinion.

Possibly but I think Holden is the more likely candidate to be on the taxi squad. Would sort of suck if Holden was claimed but would solve any issues for the season and force them to use Hague this season. Or Coghlan. And if Holden isn't claimed Vegas is under.

Boston likely doesn't give up more than a fourth or fifth.
If Vegas did trade Martinez and had 3 million to give it probably goes to Haula way before Athanasiou and you still don't scratch Roy in that lineup.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RickFromRedDeer</b></div><div>Well that is just preposterous. MacKinnon would likely not be satisfied with a 3C role with the Oil, although I suppose this would check the box for our need for a centre that can drive a line at even strength.
I am not that clever, this was Bob Stauffer’s (Edmonton color guy, big-time-homer) idea. He was on the radio suggesting it. I am not sure why he thinks Vegas retains here, but if the deal was straight up; and Edmonton thinks Fleury has anything left in the tank, this could work. I think it might me a bit harder to move $ 7 million goalie that appears to be declining this year than you might think.</div></div>
They would just retain 30% and be done with it. Fleury at 4.9 is an asset to other teams. He's had a solid playoffs every time he's been called on and still looks good, Vegas management just apparently chose the younger guy.
No way they take an extra year of Neal, it messes up their entire structure for when Glass, Hague, Dugan, Elvenes, Roy and Whitecloud would be due raises. Not all will get them but a few will.
Vegas refused to sign Neal two years ago for more than 4x4, they especially don't do an enormous favor to a division foe and give them a useful player for a useless one signed a year longer.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MMXD</b></div><div>They really can’t hold onto 50% for the next two years. That’s 3.5 in dead cap that they’ll need for contracts and a backup goalie. Vegas would explore moving jt all or about 1M RET</div></div>
They won't need to retain half but they could. They have no one big to sign apart from Lehner and that money would be there. They might need a defenseman but unless they go after Pietrangelo there's no one they need to be spending the big money on. They have some forwards they will probably look at trading as well for more space.
Glass, Dugan, Elvenes all need to get their shots next two seasons. Hague and Coghlan will get their chances on defense. Stastny is off the books next season and Tatar retention. Krebs may be ready at that point.
Neal is a non-starter they don't take that contract at all.

Players who are still point producing, two way veteran centers who show up in the playoffs are not anywhere near cap dumps. The takes you hear online.

They aren't a rebuilding team. They're a team that needs to make the playoffs next season, in which case the 1st is mid to later. And you absolutely underrated Tuch, he would score 30 with Eichel. Tell me how much Blake Coleman and Barclay Goodrow aren't worth a 1st in THIS draft.

They could definitely ask for conditions and I think Vegas would comply as I'm confident he can stay healthy going forward. Two of the injury he got were unfortunate hits that led to concussions, more bad luck than being injury prone.

It'll likely break any deal(s) or negate the "1st" without some conditions (ie: games played perhaps of 60 or 70+ etc.)</div></div>
that is absolutely the risk in their equation they would weigh. He was injured for too much of this season, when he got six or seven games under his belt he looked an absolute force but that didn't happen often enough this season and they would be rolling the dice to a degree but that is also part of their position as GM.

What Vegas should do is trade up in the draft to select Askarov. His development should coincide with the end of Fleury's career, but until then VGK should get a solid backup and not a Lehner worth north of 6.</div></div>
Which pick is Askarov supposed to draft at? Who would Vegas need to trade with? I suppose Vegas could offer Greiss 4 million and try to use Tuch in a package to move up.

There's always situational reasons for trades. Tuch is a better player and the exact type of player they need and they need to make the playoffs next season, another high pick would do them no good with where they're at, they need to start producing results. So the situation and need is definitely there and the player would most likely prove worth it.

It's possible but no state tax here. Plus, he has a reputation for being tough to work with for a time, regardless of personal issues just in his prickly attitude. There may not be so many teams offering him a ton more because it hasn't happened two seasons in a row now.
Side note, Thornton terrible rookie season followed by hall of fame career gives me more optimism about Glass injury riddled rookie season and the possibility of a bounce back season from him, not expecting hall of fame career but to be a top six center.

They have to win, it's been long enough and Tuch will score 20-30 goals and 50-70 points playing with Eichel and be that power forward they are missing.
Barclay Goodrow got a 1st in a deep draft, and so did Blake Coleman. Tuch could easily get a 1st from them.

He's already said he is looking for stability rather than the highest payday. If Vegas offers him a long term deal of 5-6 years at a competitive 6 million price point he could definitely stay. He would have stayed in Chicago for that before they traded him.
Also, there are quite a few teams who have had the opportunity to sign him and passed already, I wouldn't assume the market for him is this huge blockbuster you think it is.

Theodore and Schmidt, even Martinez have spent much time on the right, so it shouldn't be a big problem. I normally wouldn't want to let Stastny or Tuch go, and I would definitely like Ristolainen but I think the main goal would be to afford Lehner, because I am worried about Fleury dropping off his game at this late stage of his career and that would tank us if we didn't have a reliable starter there to step in.
