Flames say yes so fast it makes your head spin. They wouldn't let you hang up the phone, you have to submit it to central trade registry immediately, no takesy backsey!

Hahaha, yep. These were all based on trade ideas in the Athletic, Hockey News, etc. Picked my favourites and put them into one deadline to see just how much it would change the Flames. The trades ended up all over the map.

Went off an Athletic report on how Carolina desperately needed a goalie but would have to find a way to move Anderson's contract, and that the price for moving that much money and term would be at least a second, maybe more.

Fair enough. I didn't make up any of these trades specifically, I used various trades ideas mentioned by a few Athletic and Hockey News writers and compiled them all into one deadline. So I figured it might be an option.

The Flames decline the Sharangovich trade, and then immediately accept the Hanifan trade screaming NO TAKSIES BACKSIES all the way to central registry.

6 million a year for two more years? When the cap is going up? For a number 1 goalie? No disrespect, but that is absolutely not a hefty contract.

This doesn't stand in the way of that, to be honest. Greer has been surprisingly effective for the Flames, but his age means he is taking the place of a younger player for the Flames. This seems like a win/win, where the Canucks get depth for their fairly unexpected run at a low cost, and the Flames get an asset for a player that fell into their lap. The Canucks can still go fishing for the top six centre.

I was genuinely trying to make it fit. It breaks down into two trades in my mind. A player and a pick for Markstrom, and a first for Hanifan. The retention on Hanifan means the Markstrom trade gets upgraded a little, so the Devils can still make another move. It just so happens that the goalie and the defenceman the Devils need are on the same team. With Hamilton coming back next year, Hanifan might be deemed expendable, or might not, but there are some options there. Is your objection the cost or the pieces?

Markstrom with retention is not an option, so Markstrom to the Devils at all is not an option, apparently! The Flames owners have made clear they do not retain salary, but apparently are willing to this year for their expiring players. I can't imagine them changing it to allow a multi year retention.

The reason for this trade idea is that the Leafs don't have the pieces to make a trade that makes sense for both parties. A second and another pick seems to be the conversation, but the Leafs don't have those picks! It becomes an issue of the Leafs needing an improvement there, and probably don't see a trade that improves them as much as this one for that first rounder.

Flames decline in a hurry. Tanev for a second and another pick would make sense, but the Leafs are lacking seconds and thirds at this point, so there isn't much there to go on.

Eichel
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jdfitz77</b></div><div>😂😂😂 the Flames would offer this- AND- more if they really wanted Eichel
Most of the league would be interested in him,
and you’ll have to outbid a lot of teams</div></div>
Name a trade since the introduction of the salary cap where a team paid a huge price for a player. Find one that matches the fantasy you are concocting right now. Your best bet is Ryan O'Reilly for Berglund, Sobotka, Thompson, a first and a second. And we can see what the value of that was. Berglund, Sobotka and Thompson were all replacement level or worse, so it was cap relief and a couple of picks. Tyler Seguin would be the next comparable, and then maybe Brent Burns? These trades are rare, and the return is never what the team trading the superstar gets in return. The reality is it will be a much smaller package than you are hoping for, or they won't trade him. And won't trade him is the most likely scenario. The deal that was proposed here would be a massive return, better than anyone traded in the last twenty years has managed to get.

Eichel
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jdfitz77</b></div><div>We can take $$$ back

You can take $10 million back, but teams won't be able to match salaries to make that happen. For example, the Flames are moving out three players in the above deal, and coming close to making the ten million gap, but when Ryan comes back from LTIR, they are over the cap. They also have a lot of fourth line nobodies, this kills their depth.

Eichel
The deal, when it happens, will look nothing like this. It will be a pick-player-young player/prospect, because Buffalo can't take on a bunch of futures and try rebuilding again. It has to be guys to help now. So Monahan-Zary-1st, or Monahan-Pelletier-Zary, to speed up the timelines. But don't go expecting another team's best player, plus a whole bunch more that will prevent the new team from building around Eichel.

And with him being under contract for 5more years after this....
we have all the time in the world to wait for the offer we want</div></div>
You have until his full no move clause kicks in. So one year. I cannot imagine a single team bidding higher than this. You have to consider the cap hit. No team can absorb a 10 million hit, so money is coming back, and that will eliminate a lot of teams.

The blue chip trade piece is a 27year old Gaudreau
Besides him only having 1year after this left on his contract-
he’s too old for us to rebuild around
And if we do trade Eichel- then it will be another rebuild
This trade proposal will easily be beat by many other teams</div></div>
Man, the Flames decline this all day. I can't imagine the Flames doing this without Gaudreau, let alone including Gaudreau. The Flames wouldn't trade Valimaki for Stone, they are not going to trade Valimaki and Mangiapane and Zary and a 1st and Gaudreau. Flames walk away, for sure. As for Buffalo rebuilding, check out the ages on Valimaki and Mangiapane - its a super young trade. Buffalo would pitch this and expect to get laughed off the phone.
