We've seen it just last year when we thought Stamkos was a possibility. A lot of people were looking at this year and saying they'd rather have JT over Stamkos...so don't sign Stamkos....but if you have a chance at Stamkos...you don't defer and risk losing both.
Even when the Leafs signed Babcock to coach. I heard so many people saying 'the leafs aren't a contender yet...we need Babcock next year, not this year'....
It's rare for one of the top players or coaches in the game to come available....so timing doesn't matter...if you can get them today...you go get them today

Toews
That's a total of 12.5mill retained over the next 5 years. There's just no way Chicago would make that trade. You could offer them significantly more but that retention handicaps their team in a way similar to a very bad buyout. I loved the Winnipeg crew in Chicago before the Jets came back, but he made it very clear he wasn't going anywhere when he signed that extension. Our best shot at getting a nice homegrown star is getting Patrick Sharp on a Mike Fisher-type 'come out of retirement' deal.

Not even close.
OEL and Gardiner are not that far apart value wise. Gardiner > offence, OEL > defence. Don't get me wrong, I'd rather have OEL...but the difference isn't that far off...plus they each only have 1 year left on their contracts
Domi's value has never been lower. He's worth a late 1st for a team looking to take the risk of him being a reclamation project
Merkley is a late 1st round pick who's chances of being an impact NHLer are equal to his chances of never being a full time NHL player.
So...is that something you trade a legit superstar for? Hard pass

So true <a href="/users/beanie2911" target="_blank">@beanie2911</a> :P I wold think though that based on a lot of the mock drafts I am seeing, the Leafs will stand pat with the possibility of both Ryan McLeod and Jared McIssac being available to the Leafs at pick 25. Perhaps they acquire a second 1st rounder around that same area and draft both? Would be highly interesting and definitely help to keep our prospect pool deep and rich.

Yeah, I guess that makes more sense for the "Armchair GM" game... if I were in Dubas's position, I'd be encouraging my coach to use and experiment with the guys coming out of the much touted development program to fill out these spots. Wouldn't devote much money toward them.

Crouse is a big guy that adds a defensive game to the Leafs lineup. Domi has made an impact, and will be great in Toronto. The 1st can turn into anything. However, if Arizona is getting their #1 center, Stepan has to be going the other way. 5 stars, this is a trade I can see Toronto taking, especially when they need to sign Nylander and Marner.</div></div>

Look...I'm not going to fault you for having some fun and bringing in some big names.
I agree that the package headed to the leafs is a strong offer....but the Leafs could never accept. It'd be taking a good young core that hasn't been able to move the needle in Arizona yet and giving away the guy that has finally led the Leafs back into a playoff team. I wonder if that package would have got the Leafs to bite prior to the 2016 draft.
The other trades are being ignored right now too. Unfortunately I don't see any of them being close to viable.
Calgary is not giving you Tkachuk for that random assortment
I'd think every team in the league would take Hanifin over OEL.
And I doubt Detroit has much interest in moving AA for that return.

The only way TML even remotely consider trading Matthews would start with Keller + OEL + 1st + 1st + Strome

Lets get together and get a realistic team together. Step 2 Trades
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>beanie2911</b></div><div>am I the only leafs fan who wants to keep zaitzev? He's coming off a really bad year but he got hurt and before his injury he was the same zaitzev as 2016-17. If he rehabs well enough this summer he can be right back to the zaitzev that we all expect.</div></div>
I'm with you on this. He played a slightly above average game in Year 1. In Year 2, him and Hainsey took on an unmanageable work load. I don't remember seeing D-man playing all 2-min of a PK. Surprisingly (to me at least), Hainsey lasted longer than Zaitsev. Zaitsev got hurt...then sick...and then came back and was a shell of himself. A lot of people say he was garbage all year but that's simply not true....he was very good to start the season....I think he simply got burnt out and never recovered...maybe lost a mental edge when his game started to fall off and then the whole game collapsed for him.
I'd love to bring in a legit top 4 RHD to help ease his workload and give him another season to show us what he has before I settle on what kind of player I think he is.
That being said...he's not an untouchable and if another team wants him in a trade I'm happy to include him ...just not give him away for free.

Agreed to a certain extent. If both teams are at similar stage of contending, then they probably avoid each other. In other situations, if a GM is convinced he's getting the best package from a division rival then I don't think they hesitate. But I don't think Toronto and Buffalo match up as good trade partners.

Yep i totally agree what you're saying here, $10-$11 million per is what Tavares salary should be. But since there will be major bidders bidding on him. That alone will drive up his cost.

What is the leafs do to address d needs?
Honestly I wouldn't be opposed to trading one of our many wingers for some short term relief at RHD. However, in the long run the most realistic option is Liljegren and maybe someone else we pick up at this years or next years draft. It's fun to imagine we grab a guy like Doughty or Carlson but Toronto doesn't have the cap space to bring in a big name and keep the current core intact at the same time. So I'd say maybe trading someone like Brown this off-season for some help would be worth it, but in the long run the help should come from within.

FINALLY!!
I see Johnsson signing 1 year deal to prove he is full time NHL great player.
As for lineup, I would do it like this:
Hyman-Matthews-Brown
Marleau-Kadri-Marner
Johnsson-Nylander-Kapanen
Grundstrom-Lindholm-Leivo
Aaltonen, Martin (if Martin gone then leave a hole there and callup anybody significant from Marlies if needed)
Gardiner-Hainsey
Rielly-Ozhiganov/Holl
Dermott-Zaitsev
7th.. Ozhiganov/Holl (Carrick probably gone)
Andersen (McElhinney)
