Boom, nailed it! In a perfect world at least...
Switch Connolly with Wilson and I think it looks pretty good.

I like the spreading of the wealth along the lineup, but I don't think Johnson comes for a third line role.

RMNB Consideration Mock 17-18 (44 Buyout)
Returning virtually the same team will not serve any short term or long term purpose. Either blow something up or make a blockbuster trade to make your team better for right now.

We need more change. This roster isn't capable of making it over the hump.

Best Caps team
As far as the Nashville trade, I think Ellen and Jarnkrok are relatively equal, but Johansen (our 2016 first round pick) and our 2018 first round pick are good compensation for Ellis. Nashville is never short on quality defenseman.

Best Caps team

I think you aren't giving wheeler enough credit. He would immediately come in as the caps second highest points per game scorer, Hutchinson provides us with a back up goaltender, and overall the move frees up a good amount of cap space, while allowing Grubbauer to assume the starter role he is capable of. Joel Armia is also much better then people give him credit for, and could prove to be a cheaper version of Mojo.

Caps Sign Osh
Not enough changes to the roster. Right side is way too weak. Burakovsky needs a bigger contract. Same with Orlov, Kuzy and Schmidt. Orpik needs to go to clear cap space. Could deal Holtby and Carlson for some help on the right side and to clear more cap space. At this point I would rather have Connolly on the right side where Tom Wilson is. Then slide Vrana over to 4th line left wing and Wilson to the right side of the 4th line.

Oshie
I think that Burakovsky will be top 6, not Vrana. I also think he gets a longer, larger contract. I also think Bowey cracks the lineup before Djoos. Overall I think the team could stand to make some more changes.

Most likely roster
I certainly hope that this isn't their roster... not that it's bad, it's just too similar. They need some more roster changes to bring in fresh guys with a good mindset.

Burky has to be in top 6. His playoff performance shows that.

Time to win. Thoughts?
This is good. At this point I see Burky sliding to the right as opposed to Ovi. I would also put Connolly on the third and Wilson on the fourth line just because of the skill difference. Other then that, I like the youth route with the defense and like that you used Holtby to bring in a good package.

Caps for Cup
No to Bonino (I hate the pens). I also think you aren't gaining enough in Ekholm and Eberle to give up a top 6 wing who is entering his prime, Carlson, and our latest first round draft pick, plus a future asset. I think any big trades should start with Holtby. Grubi has been statistically equal in a smaller sample size, but would take a much more cap friendly deal while we wait for Samsonov to head over from Russia. Dealing Holt's could yield a large return from a team desperate for a franchise goaltender.

Good point. Moving him at the deadline may yield more in return. But it also might allow him to play into a bigger contract or even underperform and reduce his value. Really tricky. I also don't really think Alzner is worth resigning when you have so many younger players with higher ceilings. He was good for us, but I feel that would be a sentimental extension. His possession numbers and even his defensive numbers were not good last year.

No I still have Oshie in the slot where they played him the last two years. I envision Seguin down low where Mojo was playing, the Defensemen up top, and then Orlov and Ovechkin loading up for the one timers.
The only reason I feel Orlov will get 5 million or more is because he is older than Carlson was at this stage, and he is a locked in first pairing defenseman right now, as opposed to when Carlson got his first contract extension. He also holds a little more leverage because of all the Russians who say they will leave to the KHL to get a better contract.

Real Caps
I feel there are too many one year contracts after this year. I also feel trading Holtby gives the caps the best chance to do a gradual rebuild instead of attempting to save the whole core in hopes of winning the cup right now and then everyone's contract expires at the same time. He could bring in a sizable return package.

I scratched the Eberle addition to save salary cap room and then used Carlson as an additional trade piece to bring in Seguin and Klingberg (who has a pretty cap friendly contract compared to what Carlson will ask for soon).
Also, I think Orlov definitely deserves at least what Niskanen is making on a yearly basis. He has proven to be a top pairing defenseman. I think with additional responsibility to play more minutes, 6.7 mil will be justified.

The power play is a 1-3-1, not a 3-2. You can assume who is where on the power play if you're a caps fan.
As for the Dallas pieces, I think that a Vezina goalie with a top 6 winger and a second round pick is more than enough for an injury prone Seguin, and a young defenseman. I may have a better offer to edit that I will add in a bit.
