ROR + Carlson + defense depth = genuine playoff team?

If MIN fails to get rid of Ennis, then probably why not, but I still hope we can get rid of that huge salary w/out taking another one in.

ROR + Carlson + defense depth = genuine playoff team?
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>wabit</b></div><div>No reason for Buffalo to take Koivu (a lesser/older ROR) for ROR. Also there is no reason for Koivu to waive him NMC to go to Buffalo. McCabe does nothing for Minny that Olofsson/Seeler can't (at least in theory) do. Offer up Zucker in Koivu's place and it at least gets interesting for the Sabres. Zucker/Eichel/Reinhart would be a fast/entertaining line.
The big question for Buffalo is if Dahlin is going to be a RD or LD in the NHL?
-If he's a RD then Spurgeon does nothing with Risto, Dahlin. and Bogo (or whatever is left of him).
-If he's a LD then Spurgeon would be an excellent partner for him to get him through his rookie year.
The AZ trade is bad for AZ. Perlini (top-6 ceiling) is the best player in the trade; and AZ is getting a 3/4 line grinder, an AHL LD (maybe 2nd pair ceiling), and an AHL lifer FWD.</div></div>
Koivu for ROR alone is a bad trade for BUF, agreed. I probably failed to stress that the main value for BUF from the trade is Spurgeon (as a compatriot for Dahlin as you pointed out). But because ROR for Spurgeon is still an uneven trade, MIN adds Koivu to 1) close the value gap, 2) give BUF a player, who doesn't have qualities of ROR, but can play 2nd C behind Eichel (he still notched 45 points last year, that's only 15 less that ROR and there's still the Spurgeon factor). 3) relief a bit of cap-space to afford this.
As I mentioned in one of the previous replies, if BUF still doesn't like the value, they can probably keep McCabe and/or MIN can throw in draft pick/A Stalock/J Greenway/other minor assets to close the gap. The other option is to swap Spurgeon for Dumba, but that seems like a bit of overpay from MIN's side to me.

We tried to trade him to any team that would listen last off season and the only one with any interest whatsoever was Buffalo. He continued his steep decline this season making that $5.6 million an even worse value. You'd get nothing in return for a soon to be 36 year old on an expiring deal who is way overpaid at this point in his career.</div></div>
You're right :D
I never said I think highly of Pominville, I just didn't want to be harsh in my critique of him. Also even though he's not a great player, he's still better than 5-6 forwards on BUF roster (which just shows how terrible their depth is)

I think we kinda reached a conclusion here. He is an incredible asset and it is surely possible BUF does get more than I offered. From the perspective of a MIN supporter, I was trying to make an offer that would be reasonable (I am not saying that it'd be extremely attractive for BUF). I acknowledge it is highly inprobable to happen given emotional bonds MIN has with Koivu. You also made a rather good argument with the Spurgeon contract ending soon. Still, I think that after the E Kane disaster at deadline day, this is a trade that actually might happen and both teams might benefit from it.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Greysuits</b></div><div>ROR has never said he wanted to leave Buffalo, even in the one imterview you are talking about where he said he lost his love for the game at times, he said he wanted to stay in Buffalo. He has also stated that he wants to stay in Buffalo in several interviews since then.
Also the Sabres can get veteran leadership through FA or other minor trades. When ROR is thier only trade chip of real value they have to get as much young talent as possible for him.</div></div>
I might have exaggerated the tiredness of ROR with Buffalo, but he had several years to deliver and it just didn't happen. He's an exciting player, but it is possible that BUF will never suit him enough to sell 100% of his talent there.
Given BUF current situation (average G, 2 overpriced Ds (Bogosian & Scandella), and generally awful defending), acquiring 2 defensively good players seems reasonable to me. The FA arugment is a bit off I think, as the only RHD avilable in FA this year comparable to Spurgeon is Carlson and only C comparably as good as Koivu is Stastny. They are no doubt better than Spurgeon and Koivu (although not by that much), but I doubt they will sign for BUF.
The minor trades you are talking about are also a tough track to take. The depth of BUF is poor and therefore, they don't have much assets to trade except draft picks. But trading away draft picks sabotages the strategy you mentioned earlier about getting as many young players for ROR as possible.
I think BUF are in a position, when they have to lose something to overcome this. And ROR is enough attractive asset to lure a lot of value in return for that. You surely might disagree if Koivu and Spurgeon are the value, but I think either way, we'll see ROR out of BUF pretty soon.

If I checked correctly, Dahlin is a LHD, why would you need another one for him? Wouldn't it make more sense to get a RHD (like Spurgeon) to play with him? (I know Risto is a RHD, but putting them together seems like putting all eggs in 1 basket)

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Greysuits</b></div><div>I don't think the Sabres would move ROR for a 35 year old Koivu and 28 year old Spurgeon with only 2 years left on his deal. Based on the state of the team they are probably looking for controllable young players to help build around Eichle and Dahlin.</div></div>
They are in a state of rebuild for 5+ years. ROR is absolutely disgusted with that team (he admitted on several occasions, that it is hard to stay motivated when the team is continously losing) and next year, they will rely heavily on bunch of youngsters (Eichel, Reinhart, Mittelstadt) and their only experienced forwards worth something except ROR are Pominville (who is defo not worth 5.6M at this moment) and Okposo. In defence, all their experience defenders are a joke and they will need experienced tutor to help Ristolainen and Dahlin develop.
Very good defensive center with a lot of leadership experience (who will be a lot cheaper after next season) and a very good defensemen who might help develop the absolute gem they will have in Dahlin for at least 2 seasons for a (an excellent) player who failed to lift them from the basement of the league and will have to settle to position in 2nd line. It certainly isn't trade that is easy to make, but I believe that after taking all pros and cons, BUF will settle for the deal (they might want some 2nd/3rd round draft pick added or remove McCabe from the trade, but in the end they will do it).

Staal to Jersey
1st round pick, 2 mediocre 2nd rounders and a 33 yo 3rd/4th line center for a 32 yo productive 2nd C? This seems like a bad trade for both sides. NJD are giving away too many assets whilst Wild do not get much value in return. Clearing 750k in cap-space is better than nothing, but it surely doesn't have the value of losing 42 goals.
The reason for a trade (opens spot in top 9 for JEE) is also quite strange for me. Given Granlund and Coyle are usually playing wings, only first 2 centre spots were preoccupied last season (Staal and Koivu). The 3rd line position was up for grabs and JEE failed to get it in competition of Cullen, Ennis or Winnik (3 awfully average players). And even though I am not a huge fan of B Boyle, he's better than all 3 of those. So I don't see this reason as a very valid one.
Also the RFA signings are bit too pricey for Dumba and bit too cheap and short for Zucker.
To not sound overly negative, I value the idea of trading Staal for assets, but I just don't see this as a good enough trade.

Trades
R Smith and A Chiasson as depth signing are adequate for Wild, I like that. I'm not entirely sure about Hickey, though, almost 3M is pretty rich for 3rd pair defensmen.
If we clear the minor assets from the TOR trade, we are left with Staal for Brown and Liljegren. That is quality experienced 2nd line C for 3rd line wing and defensive prospect.
Given Staal's age, this deal seems fair to me or even maybe bit going MIN's way, but I doubt it will go through because Liljegren is a last year 1st rounder and they would want a bit more for that.
The other question is: what does this trade solve for Wild in the end? They lost their most productive player from last season, didn't clear much cap-space with the trade (1.4M) and didn't get any closer to winning the cup.
If this was first of moves to start a rebuild, then it might work, but it surely can't be left alone.
(Don't take this as a criticism of your thinking, I was just trying to point out the difficulty of the Wild situation that can't be solve with just 1 trade)

Thread:
Leafs with two trades + Carlson
I will start with the extensions. The contract for Carlson seems bit too big and bit too long, but okay. But 7 year 1M extension for Komarov? He's currently on 2.95M and low-cap contracts usually aren't that long. Given that he's 31, 2-3 year 2.3M is much more realistic in my opinion.
Now to the trades. While I like the idea of adding experience with Spezza and Methot, the trade is just so uneven. The reason is because both JVR and Bozak are unrestricted free agents, so there no such thing as rights to them. Hence the trade is heavily leaning toronto's way.
The other trade is skewed Edmonton's way soooo much. 4 players and 2 extra draft picks for moving from no. 25 to no. 10? Even without the players, this would seem like a trade EDM would possibly make. And while they might not have a use for no of these players, it's still 4 extra trade assets/4 depth players.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Mardzy</b></div><div>I understand where you're coming from, the group of Staal, Parise, Dubnyk, Suter, Koivu are all on the wrong side of 30, and if they want to win with these guys I thought bringing in elite talent on the back end could help the young guys coming in boost their production. Suter and Karlsson each playing 25 minutes would be scary for opponents. How is it that Suter is declining when he tied a career best in points?</div></div>
The reasoning about aging core is good, yes, they probably can go all in now or acknowledge they will never win a cup with this group of players. So even though I don't like this style of building teams (I prefer younger, more dynamic and well-round builds of squads) I understand your point of view.
My comment about decline of Suter might seem weird, but from what I've seen this season and last season, he is becoming more error-prone on the blue line and his play is getting riskier. This results in an improvment in points total (from 40 to 51). However, he tallied 11 more PPPs this year -> he didn't improve his point production in 5-on-5 situation and his +/- got dramatically worse (from +34 to -1). Obviously, this isn't only Suter's fault, but in my opinion, the best we can hope for, is that he won't get worse quickly. I genuinely don't see him improving at this age.

Giving Wild a bit of European look
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>marmon725</b></div><div>I haven't heard even the names of our 3C and 4C, which im not sure if that's a good or bad thing at this point for MN but tough to know if they're even NHLers. I like the numbers and term for zuck and dumba, but spurge gone and schenn in makes us worse in the short term, especially if what we get back is only middle six. Getting anything back for Ennis will be tough but I dont hate that move at all. Don't think Kaapo is the answer at backup quite yet I would keep stalock around while looking for a goalie of the future.</div></div>
TBH, if you don't follow european hockey closely or are not a big fan of IIHF WC, you probably didn't have much chance to hear about them.
So quick description:
Enzo Corvi - 25 y.o., C, currently Davos (NLA), extremely fast skater with good attacking upside and reliable on defense. The biggest plus for me here is, that he's best friend of Nino Niederreiter (they know each other since they were kids) and they have great chemistry between them. If you watch Switzerland play at the WC, he'll be the one player commentators will be saying over and over again. At 1M per year (or possibly even less, since he's undrafted player), the possible upside of having a player to lift Nino Niederreiter up is much bigger than the risk.
Antti Suomela - 24 y.o., C, currently HIFK(Liiga), creative attacking player, top points scorer in Finnish league last season, very precise in the attacking zone, doesn't complicate things too much, might pair up well with Miki Granlund and again, as undrafted player, the risk in minimal.
The defence surely took a hit, but I was very dissapointed with our attacking depth and couldn't think of a way to strengthen the attack w/out damaging the defence. On the other hand, there are still almost 5M left in capspace in this scenario, so there is option to trade/acquire some big name in the season or in free agency.
Keeping Alex Stalock is surely an option, I just wasn't very impressed with him last season and young finnish GKs seem to be proving themselves as solid backups throughout the league (Saros, Koorpisalo)
Also, Kase might be a middle six, but his stats are fantastic given his ice-time and if MIN manages to pull more draft value from the trade as MNBassman suggests, that might be a big gain in the end (given they draft the right kids, which hasn't been always the case)

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MNBassman</b></div><div>No way on that Spurgeon trade! Kase has WAY too many concussion problems. Plus, you are completely undervaluing Spurgeon here. It would take (a player like) Kase, a 1st and a 4th to acquire him.</div></div>
I checked Kase's injury card and it seems to me, that he only had 1 concussion so far. Obviously, this might be a risk for future, but I believe he's a player with huge potential, who might be regularly notching around 50-60 points a season despite limited ice-time (He had 38 points in 66 games last season and he played in 3rd line most of the time). That is the kind of player I missed in MIN last season.
I might be undervaluating Spurge here, even though it was not my intention, I love his style of play, but I'm afraid, that given he's 29 and not very physical, he might start to struggle to play at the top level in say 2-3 years. I don't think ANA would give away 1st and 4th, but 2nd and 6th together with Kase seems more like a reasonable deal to me.

Wild 2018-19
I like the idea of getting rid of Ennis and sending him to MTL, but I doubt even Marc Bergevin would take Ennis' salary and give away 3rd round pick. IMHO, for this trade to happen, either MIN would have to accept lower round pick (6/7th round) or they would have to retain part of his salary.
The move for E Karlsson is surely brave, but I have doubts here. MIN has struggled with depth last season and their 3rd and 4th line were genuinely poor. Trading away Coyle only make this issue bigger.
Another thing is, that with Suter and Parise having 7 years left on their awful contracts, giving another 8/9M per year to Karlsson (that would be the range he would look for, I think) takes away almost 25M for only 3 players (2 of them are already declining) for a long period of time. That won't end well.
Overall, I like the work with RFA signings and sending Ennis to MTL, but I think Wild cannot afford to get E Karlsson and would have to look someplace else if they want a blockbuster this summer.
