Ya, completely fair.
I just get the sense he’s undervalued on this site bc he’s had some recent injuries. But he is a legit #1 goalie on a team friendly deal and I don’t see VAN dealing him unless it’s for an absolute haul.
On the other hand, VAN needs to change something and they only have a few marketable assets - Demko is one of them.

You don’t watch Demko if you think he’s avg or below avg.
Canucks possess one of worst D-corps I’ve seen in 30yrs of watching hockey.

A weird feeling to be defending Flames players to a Flames fan, lol.
Agreed he’s their 4th best defender. But they have one of best (and most underrated) D-corps in the league. By definition, he’s a top 4.

As a Canucks fan living in Calgary, the last thing I want to see is flames succeed.. but that’s a massive overpay for Nylander.
Hanifin is a legit top 4 D and is just entering his prime.
Nylander fir Hanifin is close to a 1:1 imo

Agreed it’s often a reputation award. Yet, you can’t argue how defensively dominant guys like datsyuk, mark stone, Bergeron, Barkov are. It jumps off the page.
But you didn’t answer my Q. How do you rank defensive abilities of forwards? Exclusively defensive touches? Genuinely curious, not trying to argue w/ your opinion on matthews.

Genuinely curious how you are measuring that Mathews is better defensively than EP.
I disagree with that take, but it’s not an easy thing to debate, (same goes for me saying EP40 is better defensively) b/c a lot of it is subjective and nuanced.
Whatever the case, it’s an interesting proposal and your valuation is very fair. I just personally think EP40 has a more well rounded game and seems like he’s still improving.
On the other hand, Mathews could score 70 goals next year. Ha.

As a Canucks fan, I would not want to make this move. EP40 has become a 200ft centre and has the kind of temperament I want as a 1C.
Liljegren is far more valuable than Pearson.. since he <em>could</em> be a top-4 some day.

He's not that great, is definitely going to be massively overpaid, and is only gonna hold some of our young LDs like Hirose and Pettersson back, no thx. Also sign a new 3C and play Miller on Bedard's LW, he needs an elite playmaker to be at his best and Miller can be that for him. We also have 3 goalies on top of Demko already under contract for next season, we're not signing a backup and the fans in Vancouver would riot if we signed a bible thumper like Reimer. Love the idea of bringing Byram and Edler home tho. Finally, I love the idea of moving on from OEL but I doubt he agrees to go back to ARZ.</div></div>
I had only seen glimpses of him in CBJ.
But I must admit, I thought he was fantastic vs EDM in the 1st round.
Mind you, I haven’t seen underlying #s. But in terms of the eye test, he looks like a legit top 4.

What could have been
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BigShoots</b></div><div>I've wanted to make an armchair roster about this. A couple other ones I seem to remember are
1. Juolevi, the obvious pick was Sergachev and MacAvoy was the third dman off the board that yr so take your pick. Could also go with Tkachuk as you have.
2. In the Gudbranson trade I believe we sent our 2nd round pick as well, rumour was Judd Brackett would have taken DeBrincat with that pick
3. I believe it was the Baertchi deal, might have been a different deal with Calgary but we traded the pick that became Rasmus Andersson
4. Virtanen pick. Many scouts had Virtanen as a 2nd round pick and the Benning reached for him at 6. Could have had any number of guys but Nylander or Ehlers were obvious picks.
5. Don't forget we moved our 2nd this yr in and next. One in the Hronek deal and one in the Dickinson cap dump deal. One of those picks I can see coming back to haunt us.
Not to just go into we could have drafted so and so but these were obvious errors and had we made the sensible pick things would be a lot better.
Also there is likely a lot more than this too but those are the ones i could remember.</div></div>
I followed that draft very close and I don’t believe Mccvoy was in the conversation - which is hard to believe!
IIRC it was PLD, Sergachaev or Juolevi.
The good old days when Jason Botchford was on the beat!!

If VAN really want Morrow
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jedihonesy</b></div><div>Yes they are very similar that's what im saying. Caniac is saying Aho is much better than Pettersson... There was recently a post on reddit asking if Petey or Aho was better and 90% said Petey, and it was on r/hockey, even canes fans said Petey was better. Just shows how much of a homer this guy is. I think they are both good players but Petey is clearly the better player this year. It all started with the trash offer for Pettersson, he is worth more than a handful of bums. If you trade Pettersson you need to get back some serious pieces, either Necas or Jarvis + Morrow + 2 firsts... even that isnt a lot for a 24 yr old top 5 centre RFA.</div></div>
Ya, I hear ya. FWIW, I do think they are nice comparables. They both play a 200ft game, consistent scorers who make others around them better. I do think EP is more dynamic and has a higher ceiling.. but Aho is no slouch.

Good lord there are some brutal takes here. Not sure Caniac watches hockey unless the canes play.
Aho and Pettersson are actually very comparable players, similar skill sets, frames and career statistics - both 200ft centremen who control play and make their line-mates better.

Hughes Your Daddy
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>Oh, Hughes is a turnstile, but he's elite offensively. He'd still be a 3rd pairing D man in Carolina. Seravalli (or it may have been Pagnotta, I can't remember) said the Canes are in the Chychrun sweepstakes. Chychrun would also be a 3rd pairing D man.
As for the Skjei - Pesce pairing, it's Carolina's top pair effectively. Trying to say it isn't really shows a lack of understanding of how the Canes system works. I get this may be because you didn't watch the Canes a lot, but this is hands down the best D core in hockey right now, especially in its own end.</div></div>
Ya, I’m not arguing that the Canes have a bad D. Like I said, I’ve watched a handful of their games, and they are elite.
What I’m saying is you clearly do not watch Quinn Hughes if you think he’s a defensive liability. That was a narrative from some of the journalists out east, especially early in his career. But that is not the case anymore,
Ironically, Craig Button did a radio hit yesterday on a Vancouver podcast, Donnie & Dhali, stating Quinn Hughes is a top 5 D in the league and will be on his Norris ballot. I’ve been wrong about players many many times. And you sound like you know your hockey. But you have not been watching any Canucks games this season if you think Quinn is a liability defensively.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>Considering Hughes is not better than Slavin and that Skjei - Pesce has been one of if not the best pairing in the NHL this season analytically, I don't even think it's close. I question how many Canes games you watched if you don't know this already</div></div>
I’ve watched maybe a half dozen Canes games this year - one live. They move the puck efficiently, they’re well coached and deep on the back end. Far more structured than the Canucks. I was definitely not aware that Pesce/Sjkei was the best pair in the NHL, that is not the narrative in western Canada.
Again, I completely disagree that Quinn Hughes is a turn style and that he doesn’t help teams win hockey games. IMO the only reason someone would believe that is because they don’t watch him play.

Again I’ll agree to disagree. Elite skating Dmen are not exclusively useful in fantasy hockey, not that I partake in fantasy hockey.
But in real hockey, Dmen who can skate the puck out of trouble and make plays up ice do make a significant impact on the outcome of the game.
