I think there’s a reason that the canes let hamilton and deangelo walk. They’ve realized those types of d men don’t help teams win.

I feel like you might be biased based on your name. But I do agree with you, offensive defensemen aren't always that great to have on your team.

So the Canes give up several prime assets to put 7mil at 3LD? Yeah, that’s real smart. Hughes wouldn’t beat out Slavin for top pairing minutes, and Skjei won’t be split from Pesce, which that pairing also takes on top pairing minutes, I guess Hughes would have to play 3LD. Hell is likely to freeze over first.

Goaltending downgrade and terrible extention? That's definitely going to get you a 1st from one of the most infuriatingly cautious GMs to ever exist.

Notice i didn’t say it was my opinion (though it definitely is). Deangelo and hamilton were putting up Quinn hughes style seasons for them. They let both of them walk without hesitation. It’s not like DeAngelo signed for something unreasonable. I think that tells us something about that clubs philosophy

Uhh.. no. Hughes would genuinely be a 3rd pairing defenseman in Carolina and he's just too good for that. It's why they're not in the Chychrun sweepstakes.

Same style. Defensively awful, focused on the offense.

I’ll agree to disagree.
Dmen aren’t binary -> Good O, Bad D.
And Quinn is not simply bad at D. He’s an elite Defenseman on a **** team.
Dougie is great too, but his play is not similar to Quinn.

I question how many full games you’ve watched Quinn and Van play hockey if this is your opinion.

Nope, both are turnstiles. Help in fantasy hockey, not in winning games (if they’re top pair that is)

while this poster is full of hyperbole, Hughes isnt likely to play over Slavin or Skjei against the best lines on defense on our team.

Again I’ll agree to disagree. Elite skating Dmen are not exclusively useful in fantasy hockey, not that I partake in fantasy hockey.
But in real hockey, Dmen who can skate the puck out of trouble and make plays up ice do make a significant impact on the outcome of the game.

Considering Hughes is not better than Slavin and that Skjei - Pesce has been one of if not the best pairing in the NHL this season analytically, I don't even think it's close. I question how many Canes games you watched if you don't know this already

I’ve watched maybe a half dozen Canes games this year - one live. They move the puck efficiently, they’re well coached and deep on the back end. Far more structured than the Canucks. I was definitely not aware that Pesce/Sjkei was the best pair in the NHL, that is not the narrative in western Canada.

Again, I completely disagree that Quinn Hughes is a turn style and that he doesn’t help teams win hockey games. IMO the only reason someone would believe that is because they don’t watch him play.

Oh, Hughes is a turnstile, but he's elite offensively. He'd still be a 3rd pairing D man in Carolina. Seravalli (or it may have been Pagnotta, I can't remember) said the Canes are in the Chychrun sweepstakes. Chychrun would also be a 3rd pairing D man.

As for the Skjei - Pesce pairing, it's Carolina's top pair effectively. Trying to say it isn't really shows a lack of understanding of how the Canes system works. I get this may be because you didn't watch the Canes a lot, but this is hands down the best D core in hockey right now, especially in its own end.

Ya, I’m not arguing that the Canes have a bad D. Like I said, I’ve watched a handful of their games, and they are elite.

What I’m saying is you clearly do not watch Quinn Hughes if you think he’s a defensive liability. That was a narrative from some of the journalists out east, especially early in his career. But that is not the case anymore,
Ironically, Craig Button did a radio hit yesterday on a Vancouver podcast, Donnie & Dhali, stating Quinn Hughes is a top 5 D in the league and will be on his Norris ballot. I’ve been wrong about players many many times. And you sound like you know your hockey. But you have not been watching any Canucks games this season if you think Quinn is a liability defensively.
