No one is trading for PK this year. For one, they need to actually see him bounce back. Second, he is due another large bonus payment at the end of the 20-21 season, after which he's only due $2m real world salary. Anyone considering kicking the tires will wait for that to be paid out.

I don't see them bringing any other forwards in. Zajac isn't getting moved to wing. Bastian probably has the inside track over McLeod. I'd be surprised if Bratt takes less money than Kapanen got. Severson is 1RD.

In any event, if anyone had any interest they could have offer-sheeted him for a one-way at league minimum and I'm certain NYI would not have matched. Not sure he's going to entice anyone to take Hickey's 3.75m.

Tbay won the trade. Cup win plus the much needed cap space.
Simmonds was worse than a loss, it was an franchise embarrassment, which might cost them the ability to sign future UFA's.</div></div>
Sami was hurt. That was the best they were going to do.

In this theoretical deal, the Devils are already retaining 6m by taking Eriksson.

I think it's about on-hand cash and expected revenue just as much as it is about present day cap space. Teams just don't want to pay the money, even with the assets coming their way.

This isn't even an issue.
Carry on.</div></div>
More like those guys were never signing here. They are "building through the draft" because the team was so bad, mostly because of Subban, Hughes, and Schneider, that they immediately re-entered a rebuild.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NHLfan10506</b></div><div>Who have they wanted to sign, but couldn't because Subban is on roster? Who have they overpaid?
NJD has an estimated $8 million in cap space this year, and $20 million coming off books next year and $16 million rolling off year after that. There are fine salary cap-wise.</div></div>
When what you need are elite, top-of-market players who are good enough to push everyone currently on your roster down, $8m isn't a lot of space. When you're such an unattractive destination for free agents you probably need to add 1-2m per year to any contract, it's hardly any space at all.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NHLfan10506</b></div><div>What? No. He is significantly overpriced...but cap dump means you'd pay someone to take some of his salary. NJD would not give up Zacha, Merkley, etc...to move him. He is still a middle-pairing d-man. And NJD has no reason cap-wise to pay for him to leave.</div></div>
I know exactly what a cap dump is and Subban is a cap dump. I just said the price to move his cap hit isn't worth it. He's not a middle pair guy and NJD would absolutely benefit cap wise moving him, it's just the price would be exorbitant and no one wants to sign here anyway. But the narrative of NJD being awash in unlimited cap space is false and seems to crop up the most when Subban becomes a topic of conversation. When you need to overpay for literally anyone to consider coming to your team, borderline NHLers paid at the top of the pay scale are issues. No one is touching PK until his final bonus is paid out and that's assuming he shows anything next season.

He is a cap dump at this point. It's just not really worth the price it would take to clear it since there is no indication at all that anyone actually wants to play here.
