How do suppose both Lucic and Monahan get onto LTIR and stay there?
Maybe you should use your 1st and 2nd round picks to get rid of them.
Oh, and BTW, Sutter would want more physicality from the 4th line and 3rd pairing.

On paper if Im Calgary I'd do this in a heartbeat. Opens up more possibilities with their pending RFAs and UFAs. However, it will never happen in reality.

There’s no shot he returns less than a 1st + A prospect if he were to get traded, which he won’t. Monahan will likely get moved for slight positive value (like a mid-round pick) to a team that desperately needs a centre (good bounce back candidate considering he’s only 27, has 7 20+ goal years already, and only has 1 year left so there’s very little risk associated with his contract). And if necessary we can probably dump Lucic for a 2nd as well. Both of those would happen before we even think about moving Mangiapane.</div></div>
Dump Lucic for a 2nd!!?? To who?

I guess you're the crack reporter. Who has interest in Monahan? Almost $7MM for damaged goods. Arizona? Yup, for a 2nd round pick going their way.

CapFriendly homers are funny. They think they the absolute right to sign their own UFAs, though they are quite pleased when a UFA from another team joins their team.</div></div>
No, its called a scenario not being a homer. No one knows what Treliving or the players are thinking.

Looking at 23/24....wouldn't the Flames be in a better very situation having Mangiapane, 5m cap (by having Mangiapane not Gaudreau), and then also have 6m in free cap without Monahan.</div></div>
Lol
Mangiapane is not Gaudreau and never will be. Less hands, skating, and IQ.

Typical BS comment...how do you propose affording $20+ million in aggregate contracts for Gaudreau and Tkachuk? And if you read the description its the concept of trading Mangiapane not the absolute return.

Big amp Small Trades for Playoff Push
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ledge_And_Dairy</b></div><div>Based on cap space and current team needs. What Im saying is get over it, he's gone. Probably packing his bags for Toronto or Florida in 10 days
Calgary's defense and team mentality have been excellent this year, why would they mess with it?</div></div>
I couldn't care less if Gio comes back. Monahan's contract needs to be offloaded. Gio happens to fit the criteria and he knows the system. And Seattle may look at Monahan differently than most teams , especially if Calgary adds a sweetner. If they can't get this done then some other trade involving Monahan for a depth adding/pending UFA. Shoot, I'd even consider trading for Dzingel.
Bottom line there's not enough money with Monahan to do the proper internal work next year. Yes I think we can still squeeze in the 4 priorities (JG, MT, AM, OK) but there's little leftover to fill out the starting roster. The consequences of not finding a work around with Monahan is we lose JG, or trade Tkachuk's rights. The caveat is there's always the offseason - and maybe that's where I could talk myself out of making a move with Monahan until after the playoffs. To be fair Monahan is an NHL caliber player, just overpaid by a factor of 2x to 3x.
This guy's proposal is not tenable...unless the return is silly-good, I would not trade Zadorov (and neither would BT), which is in support of your point.

Calgary - maybe Toffoli for a second. Doubt they'd give up a first (prior years' lessons). MTL Keep's Dvorak, Calgary keeps a 'better-of-late' Monahan. However Calgary needs to trade Monahan's salary at some point to sign their pending RFAs.

Montreal needs a top 2 centre. And they get a top prospect D

Major hole in the top line? What's your proposition to retain JG, MT, AM, and OK? Can't buyout Lucic. Trade Coleman? Trade Backlund? Trade XYZ? We will have to spend well over $20MM/year (closer to $25MM) on those 4.

This roster may not make the playoffs, but the addition of Eichel will buy goodwill with the fan base. Cap space not an issue now, but potentially. Need to resign Tkachuk for $8MM to $9MM over 7 to 9 years, if Bread has a repeat season he's in the $4MM to $5MM range, Wade would be in that bridge deal territory of $2MM to $3MM, and the defense will have salary inflation either with re-signings, or FA signings.
As a Flames fan since day 1, we just desperatly need a #1 centre, at almost any cost. Feaster tried to trade for MacKinnon with our 3 1st rounders...he obviously should have tried harder. Look at the result.
I feel with MT and Eichel complemented by Lindholm and Bread, perhaps a couple of the younger crew, there's a revamped and more effective core in 22/23 and into the future. Defense needs some amount of work which will be easier if Hanifin becomes a true #1 defenseman, which I believe he can and is worth waiting for.

Shoot, even as is, I'm not sure I'd do this as a Flames GM.
