Mangiapane is worth significantly more than 2 2nds. Also trading him would be stupid as scoring depth has been the complainant with this team for multiple years now. Monahan will likely be traded, there is already reported a lot of interest in him.

Mangiapane has 35 goals this year and is an elite defensive player/PKer, plus he’s fast, an RFA, and only 26. There’s no shot he returns less than a 1st + A prospect if he were to get traded, which he won’t. Monahan will likely get moved for slight positive value (like a mid-round pick) to a team that desperately needs a centre (good bounce back candidate considering he’s only 27, has 7 20+ goal years already, and only has 1 year left so there’s very little risk associated with his contract). And if necessary we can probably dump Lucic for a 2nd as well. Both of those would happen before we even think about moving Mangiapane.

Maybe the best policy is just not to worry a Gaudreau (or any UFA). They are FREE. Monahan's full cap and depending on him on LTIR the whole season just can't be wished away.

Looking at 23/24....wouldn't the Flames be in a better very situation having Mangiapane, 5m cap (by having Mangiapane not Gaudreau), and then also have 6m in free cap without Monahan.

Typical BS comment...how do you propose affording $20+ million in aggregate contracts for Gaudreau and Tkachuk? And if you read the description its the concept of trading Mangiapane not the absolute return.

Lol

Mangiapane is not Gaudreau and never will be. Less hands, skating, and IQ.

You know, I am not sure Calgary is going to be able keep Gaudreau. He has long desired to play closer to home. And he would make more by playing in the states.

I agree. And his two "hometown" teams are Jersey and Philly...both who have cap to sign him.
CapFriendly homers are funny. They think they the absolute right to sign their own UFAs, though they are quite pleased when a UFA from another team joins their team.

Well of course Mangiapane is not as good as Gaudreau. But the real LOL, is fans thinking they can hide a player on LTIR so they make up fantasy roster.

No, its called a scenario not being a homer. No one knows what Treliving or the players are thinking.

Then why didn't you buy him out. 2.3m cap hit in 22/23, so the roster isn't cap compliant .]

Hahaha

I guess you're the crack reporter. Who has interest in Monahan? Almost $7MM for damaged goods. Arizona? Yup, for a 2nd round pick going their way.

Well I agree with "we I don't know". But your buyout proposal doesn't make it cap complaint. Of course the biggest factor is Gaudreau. Does he want spend his entire Calgary with the Flames ?

Don’t sign anyone else but Gaudreau and Tkachuk let all your other UFAs leave

Nobody is paying a 2nd for Lucic.

I've always liked Monahan the player. I agree that he's a better player than his numbers this year suggest, but the numbers don't tell the whole story. His hip issue is very worrisome. It slows down just about any athlete. Pastrnak, Kucherov, and Seguin to a certain extent came back from it, but it shortens careers more often than not. He's also had wrist surgery, another tough one for a hockey player. His numbers have been declining since 2019. Trading Monahan for anything other than cap space is unlikely.

Good god, I need to stop reading this stupidity.

Paying a 2nd to dump a contract of that size with only one year left for a guy who is only a decent 4th liner is pretty standard at this point…

See Gostisbehere, Ladd, Johnson, Stralman, attempted Dadonov trade.

Monahan probably gets small positive return (mid-round pick or C prospect) despite his injury concerns, or at least future considerations with no retention, because he’s a centre, only 27, and has a track record of scoring goals. Plus like I mentioned, only 1 year left so there’s very little risk for a team that won’t be cap-strapped next year to pick him up and hope for a bounce back giving them a free top 9 centre.

Crack reporter? It was Seravalli that reported it. One of the better insiders over the last couple years
