Carolina added Bear, Cole, Kotkaniemi, Andersen, Raanta, DeAngelo, Leivo, Stepan... there's a LOT of improvements on this Canes roster. Hamilton was let go because his deal is going to be an anchor almost as soon as the puck drops this season. Carolina have MAJORLY improved almost everywhere. Montreal still are weak down the middle.</div></div>
None of the players that carolina took on are difference makers. Hamilton's production accounts for almost all of these guys production added up. Andersen couldn't keep up a .900 average with a defense that is of similar quality as carolina's and raanta's 905 is also under Reimer's 906 so wouldn't call those upgrades. I would also question the judgement of someone that brings a guy like DeAngelo in a locker room full of kids. I would've passed on that, no matter how low the price tag was. Montreal's center line is going to be better than last year's, Danault is going to stop taking Evan's ice time (who is faster and more skilled). Weber is not lost, he's on the LTIR where is highest value is for the cap space he provides. Most discussions about him last year were about how slow he was and how he should be pushed to retire. What we have now is better than a retired weber, he's a cap boosting weber. In the end we'll only see what the result is once the season start but my feeling is that the right pieces are now in the right slots and the underachieving centers issue we had have been handled. As to the "who would want to sign in montreal" point you are trying to make, I'd just say Carolina doesn't have anything very bright to show in that sector either, nothing matching montreal's recent UFA signings anyways (toffoli, chiarot, savard, hoffman).

Cant wait til they offer sheet Necas next year at 8.2M!! Albeit Carolina feels like they can overpay all their forwards but will dump Norris Level D and Calder Level Goaltending.
Maybe Ethan Bear @4.1M is a better target?!?

Forward and goaltending depth is very solid, defense is questionable but nonetheless should be fighting for a playoff spot this season

Move out Poolman. If we have to pay a fourth rounder or something then so be it. Cap also increases next year. We can move out Pearson if he doesn’t play well

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JaredOfLondon</b></div><div>/carolina starts preparing suzuki offer sheet</div></div>
This is actually fine to be absolutely honest. Suzuki is worth the money they'll OS him so we'd be having to pay the player money we'd have given him anyway and at least we get properly compensated for it if not. Probably in the 4 1st round pick range if they pay him more than he's already probably worth. 9-10M etc
Plus by this point, by Carolina doing another OS, it gives the Habs full authority to OS Necas or Jarvis down the line, etc. just to get even again. Kind of ensuring Carolina wouldn't do it again.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>habsfan00</b></div><div>morressy too low</div></div>
He’s at most an 85. I think a big miss is pionk not being MED ELITE, with the ratings they have for some other dman in his skill range, a number of them are MED ELITE. I think brenden Dillon could probably be and 83 as well. Also Copp just had a career year and will see an increase for sure. I could see Copp being an 83 in NHL 22. It’s also arguable to turn goalies like Price, Vasilevkskiy and Hellebuyck to franchise. Gibson maybe as well, also Bryan little could just be turned into another typical LTIR player, like 70 OVR and 700k salary.

We don't have as much as you think. Next couple of years are going to be tight without moving salary. If Weber is able to return, we're sunk.
Too many $4-5M contracts with term handed out in a short period of time, RFA raises, and we're going to have to spend money on the defense.

didn't say he wasn't but hes only got 1 year left and could easily walk. His value to Detroit is getting them to the cap floor and holding a roster spot.

I'm also not sold on Stamkos as a C anymore. He probably can still play the position, but won't be nearly as effective IMO. His results without Point and Cirelli haven't been great

everyone is forgetting Poehling. His speed, size, shot are all NHL level. He led Laval last season in almost a point per game. He is very close and may cause some surprises at camp. He also played over half his games at LW last season.

I can't see Nashville trading Kunin.
I think Ekholm without retention gets a similar package that Jake Muzzin got LA; two B tier prospects and a 1st round pick.

This team is mostly 2nd/3rd line talent, other than Hellebuyck, Miller, Petry, and maybe Rielly. With those being your best players, this team just won't go very far.
I'd change up the lines a bit though:
Palat - Miller - Bratt
McCann - Couture - Gurianov (could change around the 2nd/3rd line wingers until you get the best fit)
Stastny - Pagueau - Hornqvist
Hathaway - Pacquette - Motte
It's actually surprisingly difficult trying to come up with lines for that forward group...
They could potentially make the playoffs due to defense and goaltending, but they'd be nothing more than a bubble team.

Ylonen showed last year what his value is going to project to be. Plus you get two third round picks for a player who only makes 3.4 and is serviceable and played very well in the playoffs. You're getting paid more than enough to take on Byron
