Limited lottery ticket
The Meier deal isn't exactly a steal since there is a ticking time bomb at the end, Timo will have to be qualified at $10million to retain the rights to match offers and that is 1 year after Hertl's new contract since he will be a UFA the year before. You'll need a huge cap increase to keep both...or make a trade of a high salary such as Kane's

Shoutout to Labanc
What do you do with LeBanc next contract then? Assume Patty and Jumbo retire and you bring in 2 ELC's, you only save $550k plus your $316k cap space plus the Martin buyout of $1.4mm for $2.266mm and you'll need to give raises to Heed, re-sign Dillon (are you going to let him walk) plus others...

that'd be the day</div></div>
I'm not equating Liljegren with LeBanc...if you go back and look at Doug Wilson's original summer plan for last year, he offered Tavares $13million to be a #1 C for the foreseeable future. Sharks would have had Tavares and Burns as #1C and #1D and no money for EK65. Pavs wouldn't have been re-signed in either case because there was never going to be enough money to sign him after the other contracts kicked in.
EK65's new contract is lower than what Tavares would have received. Now look at it from Toronto's perspective: You can't keep Marner if he gets an offer sheet greater than $9.6million; unless you trade someone else. You also have only 1 Dman signed for 2020-21 season and you'd be cash strapped that year too to be able to upgrade. So, a) who do you trade to keep Marner and b) how do you get a D that can get you past Round 1? Or, alternatively, you keep Tavares, Marner, Nylander and add Burns and a Lebanc to replace Kadri's scoring so that you now have 2 top D signed for 2020-21. From the Sharks perspective, you keep Doug's perspective of having a young #1C and a #1D (who is younger than Burns) ...Sharks are closer to replacing Lebanc with Chekovich, Chmelevski, or Blichfield in a couple of years than they are with replacing a Pavelski type of #1C. If Doug's assessment of Ferraro and/or Merkley is correct, then in a couple of years you have a replacement for Burns as well ...and you wont lose them in the Seattle expansion draft..

Imagine Trading Burns
Actually, I can envision trading Brent Burns and here's why: If you go back to last summer, Doug tried to sign Tavares to a $13mm contract to become the new, younger #1 Center we need. Had he been successful, there would not have been an EK65 on the roster since the cap space would have been taken up. You would have had Tavares as a 1C and Burns as a 1D....and either way, Pavs would have been gone because there was no room to sign him for this year, given all of the other contracts kicking in for 2019-20.
Now, envision an Offer Sheet for Marner at $10.56million for 5 years. No way Toronto can match that and if you look at 2020-21, they only have one D Man signed (Reilly). The Sharks make a hockey trade with Toronto by trading LeBanc and Burns for Austin Matthews and timothy Liljegren. Sharks now have their #1C and a #1D in EK65, both younger than Burns and Tavares so should be around for years. Toronto has Tavares, Marner and Burns instead of having Matthews and Tavares; and they have 2 D men signed for 2020-21
