It was, Fabbri wanted out and Army did him a favor. It was an awful trade from a Blues perspective.

He was playing center towards the end of the season. That said I wasn't sure where to throw him I just wanted him gone. The Blues gave you Fabbri for nothing I figured maybe the Wings would take Sanford for nothing too lol.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mokumboi</b></div><div>No idea why we'd lose Tank to keep Dunn, then trade him for peanuts and sign the horrendous Oleksiak to a much bigger deal.</div></div>
Can they get more for Dunn? Sure, but my focus is mostly roster construction here than getting a "reasonable" return per se. I've heard Devils and 3rd separately at different points to I went with that just to get him off the roster. As for Oleksiak over Dunn specifically...with Faulk, Krug, Walman, and potentially Perunovich, Dunn's skills are obsolete. The Blues need a guy that's big and defensively sound, Dunn is neither, Oleksiak is both. I don't like the AAV or term of 4x4 for him but I've read that's what it's going to take on the open market so I plugged it in. It's the cost of winning now and that's where the owner sees this team currently.
It's also less about "losing Tank" than it is getting the cap space which the Blues need to sign RFAs, Landeskog, and Oleksiak.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jrdroge25</b></div><div>U guys get more for Dunn. If we’re only giving a third, we would also probably include prospect or young player like Boqvist. That would be reasonable; Boqvist and a 3rd</div></div>
My focus was mostly on putting a roster together rather than getting "reasonable" returns per se. I've heard the Devils are interested at one point which is why I chose them. The last I heard pre-expansion list was that the best offer Armstrong had was a 3rd so I threw that up there but I'm betting he fetches more like a 2nd.
I don't think Bortz is for sale. He's solid team guy, great shot blocker but not exactly a guy you want in the line up every night. He's on an affordable deal too which the Blues need.

"Can LTIR be used in the off-season?
Yes, LTIR can be used in the off-season while the 10% off-season cushion is active. LTIR in the off-season is calculated using the basic equation outlined above, which permits a team to exceed the off-season salary cap. To use off-season LTIR the team must provide doctors proof that the player in question will continue to be injured at the beginning of the regular season for 10 NHL games and 24 calendar days.
At the start of the season the teams LTIR relief & ACSL is recalculated when the 10% cushion is removed."
This means the Blues can wait until the last day of the offseason and then provide doctors proof that he'll be out long enough. Based on what us fans are hearing Steen may be done and playout the last of his contract on LTIR much like Hossa is but for only one year in Steen's case.

Petro to Leafs after Blues fail to come to terms
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Boomer125</b></div><div>So what's the extension St.Louis has worked and Pietrangelo has signed?</div></div>
I have no knowledge of one, but I'm guessing that's your point? Not sure what you're suggesting though other than maybe the Leafs don't need to trade for Petro like ppl have already suggested which may be true, I won't argue that.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>leafs101</b></div><div>or the leafs trade Marner for a worthy package, then grab Petro in UFA without trading him for a bottom 6 winger</div></div>
I mean sure, I guess it is a bit of a stretch but I was looking for ways for this to work with both sides. Leafs need defense but don't have the cap space to sign Petro. Leafs have half their cap in 4 forwards and might consider trading one for more defensive help. Any suggestions on additional compensation to make this work with the Blues? Both teams are in cap hell so just picking Schwartz or Perron (plus still picks/prospects) instead doesn't work, it isn't that simple.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>leafs101</b></div><div>Also you'd have to make a subsequent move (trade schwartz or Perron) to shore up the D, and also because playing on the third line would really hinder Thomas' development</div></div>
If Schwartz or Perron are included here instead of Sanford the Leafs likely can't afford Petro so what's the point? Any additional compensation from the Blues will need to be prospects and/or picks IMO. Thomas has already been playing third line and with ROR and Schenn signed long term he likely will be for a couple more years. It may hinder his development but the Blues are deep at center and contenders so that's a sacrifice that will have to be made. At least trading Bozak gets him back to center where he belongs.

Hadn't considered that, if that's the case, no chance this happens then. That said Petro is a way bigger UFA than Hayes but still very unlikely considering. even with some draft picks going the other way to the Leafs.

Petro Re-Signs Steen Retires
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>STLBlues17</b></div><div>Idk why steen would forfeit 3.5 million dollars, would be nice though</div></div>
I mean athletes retiring before their contracts end isn't all that rare. Considering Steen's age and his injury history over the last couple years, I wouldn't be surprised either way. Sure he could pull a Backes and make them pay him his money, but considering Steen's mutual respect for the organization I think it might be the best situation for both sides for him to retire. Just a suggestion that makes things easier for the Blues to resign Petro that's all.

Saves the Blues 2 million when Grabner plays and when Grabner suffers his normal injury issues, it'll remove the whole Bozak contract.
Steen won't retire, why would he ?</div></div>
lol like I said the Blues need to take on less money than they do for buying Bozak out, they can't bank on Grabner being on the LTIR that's no plan. What a comical suggestion.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mokumboi</b></div><div>Why would we buy out Bozak? He has actual trade value.</div></div>
I mean I don't disagree entirely but with the flat salary cap situation I'm betting he'll have less value than you think. That said even if they do find someone that wants him the Blues will still need to dump enough cap to resign Petro. Finding someone that offers you someone/something with either no cap hit coming back at all or at the very least less than what the Blues can buy him out for is very unlikely IMO. Either way it was just simpler to buy him out in this exercise than find a random team to take the cap hit.

If that's the case sure and then they could have even more space but with Florida's salary dump of Trocheck I doubt they take on an aging player for more money than he made.
