Petro to Leafs after Blues fail to come to terms

Created by: insaneDane09
Team: 2020-21 St. Louis Blues
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 31, 2020
Published: Jul. 31, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Steen retires. Bozak gets traded for a draft pick to someone saving the Blues money on a buy out (any team will do, not just Florida). This leaves $3.5m in cap space which should be enough to resign RFAs Vince Dunn and Jacob De La Rose. Giving the Blues a full roster plus one forward and one defensive scatch.

The Marner trade here is going to be polarizing. Not really sure how realistic that trade is, but I do think the Leafs might consider trading one of the big 4 if this playoff run is another failure. Also, if the Blues can't come to terms with Pietrangelo I think this could be a situation where they sign and trade him to another team.

I think Nylander makes more sense here in general, but cap wise that wasn't enough for either team really to make things work. Leafs are already pushing the cap and Petro will make more than Nylander, so trading them straight up doesn't work. Marner for Petro straight up requires the Blues to dump more cap but it likely takes more to get Marner than that anyways so I threw in a young, up and comer in Sanford who is also pretty cheap and contract controllable (RFA in 2021-22). Depending on what the Leafs want I think Blais and Barbashev are interchangeable for Sanford as well. Add or subtract draft picks to make this trade actually work for either side, I was more focused on the salary cap working.

or the leafs trade Marner for a worthy package, then grab Petro in UFA without trading him for a bottom 6 winger

Pietrangelos value after playoffs is literally in his UFA rights for couple of days/weeks. The biggest value for that I saw ever was like 5th round pick for Hayes rights or Yandle rights. No.

Also you'd have to make a subsequent move (trade schwartz or Perron) to shore up the D, and also because playing on the third line would really hinder Thomas' development

Hadn't considered that, if that's the case, no chance this happens then. That said Petro is a way bigger UFA than Hayes but still very unlikely considering. even with some draft picks going the other way to the Leafs.

If Schwartz or Perron are included here instead of Sanford the Leafs likely can't afford Petro so what's the point? Any additional compensation from the Blues will need to be prospects and/or picks IMO. Thomas has already been playing third line and with ROR and Schenn signed long term he likely will be for a couple more years. It may hinder his development but the Blues are deep at center and contenders so that's a sacrifice that will have to be made. At least trading Bozak gets him back to center where he belongs.

I mean sure, I guess it is a bit of a stretch but I was looking for ways for this to work with both sides. Leafs need defense but don't have the cap space to sign Petro. Leafs have half their cap in 4 forwards and might consider trading one for more defensive help. Any suggestions on additional compensation to make this work with the Blues? Both teams are in cap hell so just picking Schwartz or Perron (plus still picks/prospects) instead doesn't work, it isn't that simple.

Yeah but that was in a normal summer where you had about a month in between the postseason and UFA. This offseason you literally only have a week, and he's likely just gonna go to whoever throws the most money and term at him

Also in this scenario, if you dont have the money to keep Petro, why are you adding Marner?

So what's the extension St.Louis has worked and Pietrangelo has signed?

Pietrangelo’s UFA rights might get you a 4th rounder from a team desperately in need and that would be the highest UFA rights payment in recent history.

If you want Marner I’d imagine Parayko would most definitely have to be on the table.

Just the 2 cents of a fan of neither team in particular

I have no knowledge of one, but I'm guessing that's your point? Not sure what you're suggesting though other than maybe the Leafs don't need to trade for Petro like ppl have already suggested which may be true, I won't argue that.

You stated in your description that the blues sign and trade Pietrangelo - without an extension there is way too much risk for TO to consider trading Marner for the right to talk to AP.

Base would have to be Marner for Parayko. Whether the Blues do it or not, is not my call. Trading for his rights means very little as he could easily walk and then the leafs have traded Marner for a bottom 6 forward
