No Pietrangelo No problem
I like the plan, overall. Solid, deep team. And shows that there's lots of options aside from Pietrangelo.
However, Gudas would be a mistake. The guy was a healthy scratch at times in Washington. Do not want. I'd give DeMelo 4 million before I give Gudas a penny.

Johnsson to San Jose is pretty popular on here. A roster like this is a pretty realistic, albeit underwhelming, prediction.
Lots depending on Dermott. He's the one I can't figure out. Will he sign that cheap? Can he play with Rielly? If the answer is no for either, then the Leafs will have trouble.

There's some small issues. I don't think ifford comes back for that cheap. I like Kerfoot, and would like to keep him. And I don't think you can nab DeMelo AND Hamonic.
But I think the premise is good. Sell off a 3rd liner and Dermot, grab a UFA defenceman. I like it based on that premise.

Even at that 21 man rosters don't work.</div></div>
It's obviously tight, yes. Maybe Clifford doesn't stay, if they want the full 21 man roster. But there's usually an injury or two that opens space during the season.
If Dermott extends for 1.25, as you suggested, I'd happily keep him. But I don't think he'll be that cheap.

You're maybe right. The number is low. But with so many cap strapped teams, his injury history, and a decent number of RHD on the market, he might not get more than 3.25 million.

If NJ is not on board, then maybe throw Dermott into the Severson trade, instead of liquidating him for picks. I'm sure the Devils would accept if there's also a young D with top 4 potential coming back.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Smitty426</b></div><div>Do they?</div></div>
As I said in the description, some tweaking may be needed. But Severson's name was in rumors at the TDL, and young scoring was something most NJD fans thought they wanted to get. It's possible that the Leafs add something to make it happen.
It's also possible that they would get more in return for Dermott and/or Johnsson. Maybe a pick from one of these deals can be flipped to sweeten the offer for Severson.

It's going to be a tightrope to make a good roster fit. And there's going to be some issues with only 2 natural righties on D in this cenario. But I think it's a reasonable possibility.

I didn't put in the specifics. I assume Montreal could be included in the new contract negotiations, if all parties know that's where the player is heading. It could be worked out beforehand. Just didn't bother putting in all the details when it's pretty tough to guess at.
Imagine any contract number you think he'd accept.

Better Blueline - Keep Big 3
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bcarlo25</b></div><div>First off, the cap has gone up since those contracts were signed. 7 million is logical for Nylander. As for Matthews, I think the number is 12. Entry level 40 goal scorers don't grow on trees. He'll certainly get more than Eichel, and I would think it would be considerably. Just under McDavid, seeing as how their a year apart seems fair to me.</div></div>
Ehlers and Pastrnak contracts are only a year old. Cap has gone up 4.5 million since then, how much higher should one players contract be after that? I already have Nylader and Marner making about half a million higher than those guys.
And Gaudreau had a point per game, 30 goal season before his extension. Have Marner or Nylander done that? No, they've been around 20+ ish goals and 60-70 points.

Better Blueline - Keep Big 3

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bcarlo25</b></div><div>Well sure, it's real easy when literally everyone takes a discount. That won't happen though.
Also, I'm pretty sure the second the leafs signed tavares it stopped being the big three.</div></div>
I'm not so sure Matthews gets the same or more than Tavares. It's RFA vs UFA contracts. UFAs are always more expensive. Matthews might get more, but we don't know that yet. And even if he did get 11, that just eats up almost exactly the 1 million in cap space I had left over. So it's not a back breaker here. Point remains that ditching Gardiner or Marleau isn't required to make it through the 2019-20 season.
And I certainly don't think Marner or Nylander took discounts in this. Not with comparables like Ehlers at 6, Pastrnak at 6.6, and Gaudreau at 6.7 million. Those extensions are about right, in my opinion.

Not gonna happen.
I get your plan is to move Gardiner before he walks, and you're trying to replace blueline depth while doing it. The plan is just fine. But you can't turn a loonie and some nickels into a 5 dollar bill. Barrie and Girard are both worth Gardiner or more by themselves. No amount of 2nd round picks or backup goalies would make that fair.

Not that good as a scoring forward for almost 5 million a year. But Kopitarr11 properly had him on the 3rd line, so it works. Not trying g to slag on Nyquist, I said the trade was about right and gave it 4 stars.

Toronto Maple Leafs 19/20
Well you get credit for putting a team together under the cap without losing Matthews, Marner, or Nylander. The deals are close to what I expect them to actually get.
But that defence is paper thin. I don't know if Holl or Rosen will ever be NHL regulars, let alone both of them on the same pairing. And even the 2nd pairing is asking a lot from those 2. Liljegren, especially, hasn't looked up to speed yet. He'll likely be in the AHL all of next season. To then make a jump to a top 4 spot is a stretch.
You do have 25 man roster, so maybe scratching it down to 22/21 would open enough room to add a defender.

Sharks in 18-19
I think you're a bit too optimistic. Tierney is a 40-point, 2-way player. He's probably going to get more than that. And I don't think Montreal will trade Pacioretty for a package that doesn't have a 1st rounder or a good prospect. A 2nd and a bit extra doesn't get it done.
I like the direction you're going. I think SJS could contend, and should be bringing in some scoring. But it's just not this easy.

So I'd like to know what you think would be fair to Ariz. to bring in a guy that at best would be a 6/7 in Toronto? Garbage in/Garbage out!</div></div>
If the Leafs don't want Hjalmarsson, then Arizona isn't obligated to lower the price just for them. They could move him to a team that does want him, or ,you know, keep him.
Hjalmarsson is haing a terrible year, but he's not a terrible player. And if Arizona trades him, it won't be to "dump him". They would want something worth while back. This is just a collection of borderline NHL talent. In other words, a pile of garbage. And I'm a Leafs fan.

(Far Fetched) Trade Deadline
Well you said "far fetched" so I won't give it a bad rating. But I feel I have to point out that Daniel and Henrik Sedin will not allow a trade this season. It's pretty much a guarantee that they retire in Vancouver. Nothing is impossible, sure. But I feel it renders the idea moot.
