Re-Acquire Kessel Land Pietro
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>KMMHL2012</b></div><div>Yeah, it's two low-ball trades.
Arizona at $6.8M cap hit can likely get more than Dermott
and then Toronto at a full $8M would likely get more than a 7th (though I assume for this sake, it's just dump him for almost nothing to free up that $1.2M in dead cap space)
though this team has a 20 man-roster at the limit of salary cap, any injuries, flu, whatever put this team into cap penalty territory.</div></div>
Short term injuries you ice the healthy skaters and deal with it. Long term injuries can go on LTIR and call up a replacement. They were literally willing to do that this season.

Read the Kessel trade description buds.... The Leafs would get 1.2 million in relief in this scenario. The site doesn't have a function to trade the full salary, but by re-acquiring the Leafs could trade the full 8 million. Also, they proved this year they'd be willing to go with a 20 man roster. Not ideal, but still legal.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>KMMHL2012</b></div><div>and this is true, Trading Kessel would likely yield more than Dermott for Arizona directly.
anyone know if a contract can have double retention from 2 different teams?
EDIT: nevermind, found my answer "An individual contract can only have a maximum of 2 teams retaining salary on it." so yeah, Arizona can retain salary again and get an even better pick or player than Dermott</div></div>
I highly doubt Arizona, in their financial situation, would be willing to retain any money.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Lenny7</b></div><div>Wouldn't whoever was acquiring Kessel be quite content to get him at the retained cap hit that Arizona currently has? The Yotes would probably still get a bit of value out of that, rather than a 7th...</div></div>
Arizona wouldn't trade him for a 7th.... That's the point. The acquiring team gets a deal, the Leafs cap cap relief and the yotes get a young d-man with upside (or whatever reasonable piece they ask for)

They aren't getting a reasonable starter for less than 1 million.

There's still some fundamental challenges that this team doesn't seem overly equipped for, and re-signing FA's in 2021 would be a huge challenge.</div></div>
Hyman and Mikheyev would be the only notable 2021-22 UFAs. Barabanov, Lehtonen and Spezza would also be up, but that likely won't be much of a concern.

Maybe its a guy like Khudobin, Crawford, Smith, Greiss, Talbot.... there will be options available. You might not like them, they might not be able to carry the load either, but they exist.

Agreed. Just trying to see if the money can work. It wouldn't be ideal.

That is basically the idea with this front office though. Spend the money on the big boys and fill out the roster with Tyler Ennis's of the world. Not saying its going to work, but just saying this scenario is POSSIBLE.

The Leafs would have literally been forced to go with 20 this season at times had they not had guys get injured (Tavares, Marner, etc.) . It has happened in the league, and it will happen again in the future.

I don't know what the market will look like for goalies, but that is all they'll have left to replace Andersen. Maybe they deal Kerfoot instead and try to find a cheap 3C. I tried to fit Pietro in without making any judgements on what specific UFAs will expect. I'm obviously not privy to that info as a regular guy outside the NHL circle.

He probably will cost more, agreed. But no, this is cap compliant. You do not HAVE to carry 23 skaters, that's just the max. At points this season some teams carried only the bare minimum of 20.
