<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Random2152</b></div><div>You realize that the cap will be like 83 million right? They can put their money into all of those things thanks to steals like Mo and Kadri. The Leafs unmovable core is basically:
______-JT-Marner
______-Matthews-Nylander
______-Kadri-_______
______-______-______

Rielly-_______
______-______
______-______

Andersen
__________

Which should come out to be ~$52 million

Now go short on Johnsson and Kappy (2-4 year deals like Brown and Hyman) and fill the depth with cheap replaceable Marlies/UFAs and you're set.

Mango-JT-Mitch
Hyman-Papi-Willy
Patty-Kadri-Kappy
Moore-Goat-Brownee

Mo-______
Dermott-Zaitzev
Rosen-Liljegren

Andersen
Sparks

Only one hole in the lineup, and finding a way to keep Gards largely fills it (Gards-Mo as a pair).

You have to remember that the cap crunch is only 1 year long (until Patty is off the books), so the idea that the Leafs are "better off using the cap to do X" is a flawed idea in itself. All we have to do is get through next year and the team is basically set, either Liljegren or Sandin will step up big time and be regulars in the line up by then or we will have the space and the ready prospects on the Marlies that we can move a player to address any remaining holes not filled by the prospects themselves (Bracco to replace Kappy at the end of his bridge if/when he wants alot of money and term, Grundstrom to replace Hyman etc).

You have to remember that this is supposed to be a sustainable run, not a 3 years and done kind of thing. Tampa is going to hit a wall within the next couple of years thanks to their inevitable cap situation, which means the best bet is to create a team that can beat them 40% of the time now, and outlast them before finally becoming the #1 in the ATL/East.</div></div>

Yeah and I like a lot of the ideas you have but in my opinion the leafs current roster wont cut it. Especially on the defensive/physical aspects of the game both from their forwards and defense. But that's the point of the site is to compare opinions in a 'friendly zone'

I would have preferred to trade Nylander before signing him and im not reacting to his current slump. I see Kapenen as a competent replacement and if you look at Craig Buttons list of prospects and analysis of the leafs prospects, the replacements aren't coming anytime soon with any kind of earth shattering upside.
