Rebuild due to boredom
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>justaBoss</b></div><div>Exposed my ignorance of Detroit's defense...sure man, whatever floats your boat.
It's a fairly accurate statement that DET has been adding meh D-man for a good while now, to the point they have to place a $3M dollar player as a healthy scratch, and have no room at all for any of the youths you mentioned unless injuries happen.
You're reading too much into this trade. It's a 7th D swap between Suter and Määttä, neither one is a lock to make to the lineup. DET gets a 2nd for taking in a worse player, although they'd play the same role. That trade wouldn't change anything for their core.</div></div>
Not sure how calling Chiarot, Holl, and Maatta mediocre is a controversial take. Chiarot at $4.75 and Holl at $3.4 for 3 more seasons is more than just a stopgap measure.

I think there is way too much substance in that Columbus trade. I bet the only thing they are interested in is Lindholm after their offseason. He would have to come at a reasonable dollar amount as well but he could be a nice fit reuniting with Johnny.
I personally think the best for Hanifin is Florida, but I don't know if they would be willing to give up the assets to acquire him. Samoskevich would be a great pick up for Calgary if they were willing to trade him for Hanifin or maybe a deal with Reinhart. Even then the Panthers just signed most of their left side so I don't see them instantly trading them unless they felt Forsling. Most other teams are pretty set on their top 4, aren't looking to add cause they are rebuilding or don't have the cap space/ assets for Hanifin.
Vladar I don't think holds any value to any team.
I think the only way Detroit considers something like that now is if it's Chiarot going the other way. Maatta was just extended, played very well and is liked in Detroit. I wouldn't support trading him for anything other than a huge win of a deal. Suter and Petry could be the oldest pairing in the NHL though lol. For value aspect, taking on Suter alone probably takes the second. If you look at the Petry trade, trade clause likely only waiving for Detroit, 35 and two years left. We paid a late fourth and a player who was expected to play in Europe this season for Petry at 2.3M to fill a position we actually had some what vacant. There is no vacant position, unless you create one by adding it to your trade, even then still 4 LHD on the roster. Full NMC so he decides where to go. Would probably cost more with Maatta since there is no desire to move him but could maybe save the pick and take Chiarot?
I said alot more here than I was planning. I guess that's what happens when you do this half asleep in bed.

CBJ trade is way more quantity than quality. The 1st is the only thing with SIGNIFICANT value, with Boqvist and the 2nd holding a fair bit as well, but there's gotta be more substance to get Lindholm and Hanifin.
Aside from that, CBJ really don't need or want Vladar, nor Hanifin at this point. I was big on pushing for Hanifin earlier in the offseason, but that went out the window once they gave a 1st for Provorov, who'd get bumped down the the 3rd pair if this happened.

The center they should go for
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>justaBoss</b></div><div>Perhaps.
My suggestion would be pulling a 2015 again. One year retool to stockpile on things.
That core is not good enough and I think they know it too. I would take the pending UFAs they have and turn them into prospect/draft capital later down the line and hope they fall into the bottom-10 - that way they can keep their 2024 1st and get a good prospect.
After that, full send on the UFA market to bring in a proper 1C for 2024-25, whether it's Lindholm, Scheifele, Stamkos...there's plenty of better options in there than there is now, and now that their core is renewing anyway with Bergeron/Krejci retiring they got time to build again.
Selling DeBrusk, Ullmark, Grzelcyk for draft capital could end up being extremely valuable for them, as long as they don't f*ck up with the drafting again, similar to how they did in 2015.</div></div>
That’s a great plan. Suck for this year and then become competitive again in 24-25

That’s what the second is here for (as displayed in the trade).
Granted we don’t know what it’d cost to dump him hypothetically, could be low as it could be astronomically high.

I feel the same way, but every Stars fan knows deep down, even though it hurts to admit it, he's staying whether we like it or not. Limiting his minutes is the safest alternative because he'll have fewer chances of f*cking up.

If Boston doesn't think that DeBrusk will re-sign at a number that they like, I could see them doing this swap and trying to flip Pesce for a high pick. But I agree that Boston's biggest need is top 6 talent, and so it makes more sense for them to hang onto DeBrusk if they can. In some ways, both BOS and CAR have excellent defensive depth and need scoring help, and with Boston falling off and the Canes rising the deal does make some sense.

True but there are many good centers in the league so OP ranking him at 14 isn’t too egregious imo. I would have Himtz ahead of Eichel, Barkov and Stützle however.

Thread:
(DET/MTL) - Lindström, 2025 4th (DET) for Petry
People over valued Petry. There is no cap space to go around. He also has term. Had they made the three way trade back at the draft, maybe Montreal might have been able to create a better market for Petry, but anybody who thought he was anything short of a negative value asset has not been paying attention to how the last two off seasons have worked. Especially later in the season when teams reach their choke points with the cap.
You also have to consider that they took on Casey DeSmith's contract. I assume if there was a market for him, the Penguins would have moved him earlier. I could be wrong, but I assume he is dead cap. They gave up Pitlick, but he was able to have his entire cap hit buried. DeSmith's cap hit is 675k.
Mike Hoffman's buyout would have cost them 1.66M x 2 years. They are now on the hook for 2.34M for 2 years. So this three way trade cost them about 680k per for 2 seasons (1.368M of dead cap) and a retention spot for 2 seasons. Retention spots are generally worth a mid or late round pick at the deadline. Add in the 675k of additional dead cap that DeSmith will cost them if they cannot find a home for him (without cap considerations), and Montreal gave up nearly 2M in cap space for a 2nd two years from now (basically the equivalent of a current year 3rd), and a B or C type prospect in Legare. Lindstrom from Detroit is a fringe NHL defender.
The above is not bad business by any means, but it isn't the home run that some of the analysts made out Montreal's haul in the Karlsson trade to be. I assume that most people who were high on Montreal's return thought that Petry was worth way more than he ended up going for.

Yeah you're probably right about that lol. If a fanbase isn't upset at all about a trade proposal on this website that means you're probably not getting enough value. Being realistic though, it's hard to tell how much actual value DeBrusk would go for since there's no way of knowing what the market would look like for him. There would definitely be some demand but there's no way to know for sure how much.

Short term retool
Unless Byfield takes a decent step forward this season I'm not sure LA really has the depth to lose Arvidsson and without moving an Arvi or a collection of smaller cap hits like Grundstrom, Liotta, etc (which also erodes their depth) it'd probably be pretty tough for them to fit Ullmark, do agree though that LA needs to upgrade their goaltending, what a confusing offseason they had. There probably is a deal to be had between the B's and LA but it needs some reworking imo.
I don't think thats a move that interests Detroit at all, they really like Maata and Debrusk might be worth a bit more then that.
Arizona can use all the D upgrades they can get but not sure they're parting with 2nds for UFAs just yet. Guess the Forbort trade could make some sense if Foote is still considered to have some upside but if not the B's probably prefer a 3rd or 4th for Forbort which they could easily get at the TDL for him.
If the Bruins did tear it down a bit they should just keep Zboril and give him a big opportunity to sink or swim, at this point I think that'd be a better course of action then grabbing another meh pick that likely amounts to nothing.

2023 NHL Offseason Discussion Thread #4 - The quiet period
The offseason is back to being boring again, so I figured I'd try and give people the opportunity to brag about the NHL players they have met. Here is my resume:
- Claude Giroux in Hearst, Ontario
- Chris Simon in Longlac, Ontario (Funnily enough, he ran a hockey school about anti-bullying)
Some honorable mentions:
- Ryan Graves' dad (Works for a local mine)
- Tyler Tucker's aunt (She taught me math)
Any cool NHL player stories on the forum?
