<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>budgeteam</b></div><div><strong>-NEW JERSEY AND THE NJD ARE PLACEHOLDERS. Assume they could be any team that would trade for Debrincat at the deadline. Not necessarily NJD, and not necessarily that exact return.</strong>

The basis of the trade is that Debrincat won't re-sign in Ottawa. Rather than liquidate Debrincat for futures, Ottawa uses Debrincat's trade value to craft a 3-way trade to bring back Karlsson. It's basically Karlsson w/ retained salary to Ottawa for Debrincat's trade return and San Jose taking Joseph, Forsberg, and Zaitsev. This trade is a Frankenstein abomination of the Phaneuf trade and the Duchene trade.

-It was recently reported that Edmonton wouldn't even take Karlsson at half retained. The cap will barely go up next year.
-This trade gets San Jose a 1st round pick ++ for Karlsson. They retain half, but if you assume they cannot move Karlsson for assets, his cap hit is a sunk cost. Over the lifetime of this trade (4 seasons starting in 2023-24) they do not increase their cap burden since Joseph and Forsberg are off the books 2 years from then, Zaitsev is off the books 1 year from then.
-It's a way to get assets for Karlsson, when there are no other options.
-Dorion does this to curry favor with a new ownership group that will involve Alfredsson.
-Whoever the third team is does this to get Debrincat, who still has 1 year of team control after this season and can also be extended right away.</div></div>

This is brutal all around
